I have been looking into backcountry clinics for a while now. When I asked some friends if anyone wanted to do one with me one offered to show me the ropes. It turned into 6 of us going. 2 of the girls in our group have lots of backcountry knowledge and have taken avy courses. The girl in charge chose Jones Pass. The part of it we did has zero avy danger and there is a snowmobile company that guides tours there (more on that later). We arrived to cold temps and light snow. Gearing up in the lot We did a 2.5 mile skin up. Heard some avalanche bombs along the way. They were not coming from Berthoud Pass, which is close by. Would have to study a map to be sure. Don’t know if we would have heard them that clearly from Loveland or Abasin. Not sure if the elevation gain. We think somewhere around 1200 feet. Internet says 1600 but didn’t feel that steep. Don’t get me wrong, it kicked my ass. At about the 2 mile mark I was getting very worn out. My friend suggested I glide more instead of lifting my feet. That made all the difference and all of a sudden what I was doing felt much easier. The wind and snow were both picking up. When we got to our turn around point it was super windy. I tried to keep sweating to a minimum wearing only a very thin shirt under a wool base layer. But I was soaked. I decided I had to take off the shirt, holy shit that was a cold endeavor. Then put on a light puffy and a hard shell for the descent. Snow was kind of cruddy and wasn’t use to the boots. They were really digging into my shins. I couldn’t wait to get down and take them off so I said I would meet them at the bottom. The track we were on was not too wide. About the width of 2 snowmobiles. I came upon a large group of people and EMS workers. There was a body covered up and I knew by the somber scene he was dead. Not wanting to intrude I had to wait till they finished to go by which took about 20 minutes. There were 3 ems guys still there waiting for a transport I imagine. But they did not move him and he was lying long ways across the path. I had about 18” to ski around him. My friend asked someone at the bottom and they said he died of natural causes. He was with the snowmobile group. I am glad I went but it’s not quite what I expected. I would go again but am glad I didn’t spend $200 on a clinic. I made the mistake of not having enough calories or drinking enough and was cramping up by the time I got down. Brought some soup in a thermos and with that and another thermos full of tea started to feel better. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk10 points

Hey All, I’m back from a fun sausage Sunday at Blue mountain the true mountain. I arrived at the lower lot around 720am and the temperature was in the low 40s. Phillycore was already in the house along with Steve the guy who brewed beer for us. Also in the house were Atomic Jeff, Johnny Law, Toast, T Maki, mute, TP4, VTMark, Shadows NMSki, Ryan, Indiggio, enjorales, enjorales Dad, Root, Salty, Schifdawg, the real Kevin Thomas, Matt Edge, The Dude4Bides;’tickle me Toast, Antman, GssUcks, Ty and many others. Firsr civilian 6 pack was had and first two runs on Main Street were great top half was semi firm smooth and bottom half was super soft smooth but Main Street deteriated fast and the lower half became rowdy. The falls was closed off for racers so lazy mile skiers and riders had to ski the whole mile an the whole mile was fun and I skied it twice. That’s a mile and a half+ long run when you add in tuts lane and shuttle and home stretch. Paradise was alright a little choppy and the sharp turn is rough...short skiing session then into the lot sausage Sunday was in full affect with a barrel of mango beer specially brewed for this day and a variety of fine meats, snacks and Antman brought Donuts as well which were the bomb deezy..JADIP4 points

Another beautiful day at JF today. The morning has greeted me with lead skies and soft, groomed snow. Racing activity was above usual, and as I've learnt, it was because another team from a sister mountain Liberty has come to practice, so they were looping both Challenge and Dematte's. Rumor is there is no snow at Liberty. Surface quality was as good as last week, but snow is getting real thin in a few places: just a couple of inches on top of Thunderbolt, thankfully still 2-3 feet on Challenge. Hopefully tonight they'll blast the slopes with new snow. Crowds were below what I saw last week, and that's surprising given than today is youth day at JFBB - everybody who's younger than 17yo is paying only $17. Me being no youth got hit with a $3 surcharge instead - something about electrical company giving them hard time. Still sucks having to pay extra on already prepaid tickets. Around 10am lead turned blue, wind subsided, and it became quite magical. With not too many people around the snow is holding quite well. I was gonna leave at noon but I think will stick around for another couple of hours.3 points

Looking at the Carbon County GIS maps, Blue owns a pretty good amount of property under the name "Tuthill Corp", "Blue Mountain Waterpark Limited Partnership" and "Aquashicola Little Gap Inc (C/O R C Tuthill)". Let me know if I missed anything. Nice to see how much room they have to the east to expand, but it could only be to the base of the pitch without runout like homestretch given the lack of land ownership unless they snuck the lift back far enough to the west to get back to their land near the snowmaking ponds.1 point

Hopefully conditions will be better by then. If so maybe I'll go night skiing. Today conditions were horrendous but the sausage and shrimp were excellent.1 point

Day 4: Jay Upper 20sF. First day of trip with full price. Checked Burke’s trail status and opted for jay. 50 min drive from Lyndon. Hit Bonnie chair first and ran a groomer to the jet pod. Hard pack or ice. Yup, that type of day. Strategy was to move from lookers right to left and search for the best stuff. #2 went down kitzbeuhel despite me telling him ice ice moguls. I skied the ice rink of jet. No winners. We then went to kitzwoods. Much better. But up top I failed to execute a required turn and was a tree hugger (to paraphrase GSS; ski good or hug wood). No worries. Lower kitzwoods was the bomb though. Bonnie chair to canyonland glades which normally flow good for me was a bust. Not enough base. To many unexpected crevasses/streams. But power line bumps where $ so that was fun. CanAm and river quai while technically open was a “yeah, no”. Saw no point in tram (but hardy souls where hitting the head wall goods) so traversed to the flyer. Pomaline was damn fun. Huge ice bumps but skied in tight so fun and partially avoided the the bowling ally trails everyone else on. Andres and beaver pond skied great. So did north and northwest passage glades. Lower Everglades skied great but I track to far left and had to noodle back. JFK was great or horrendous depending on how far or tight the ice bumps were (tighter is better). We skied until 3:30 and called it a day. Not epic. Sometimes quite fun, sometimes sweet Jesus get me out of here (most trails). Heading home tomorrow. Jay may get 6” by noon tomorrow, but we are done. No pics aside from iconic head wall tram shot.1 point
