It has been a while since I have been at Shawnee but it was a lot of fun for the family. Rented 80'sat Adventure Sports on the way in for my 5 year old and took advantage of anyone under 46 inches is free. My wife, both sons, daughter and friend arrived at 9:30. Getting our vouchers was a little annoying since their were so many people and seemed like no non had a clue. I brought my 5 year old to the learning slope and spent most of the day with him. It was great to have him there but was a ton of work. I spent most of the day pushing/carryon him up a part of the slope so he could ski about 15-20 feet. My wife and daughter skied a few trails and my son and buddy explored the blue and black trails. I eventually went for a run with my daughter on Lookout to Pennsylvania. Definitley need to get her a lesson since she doesn't turn very much. I only got about 5 runs in but the mountain was fun(spent the rest of the day with son). The runs were fun and seemed longer than Jack Frost. I also liked their high speed quad. I will definitely bring the family again.8 points

Just got home from a fun weekend skiing with the family. We drove up to the Catskills on Friday afternoon and checked into our motel. Woke up early on Saturday morning and went up to Plattekill. I can see how this place would be awesome when there is good snow, but it was in rough shape after the warmth and rain a couple days ago. Lots of ice and thin cover. My new skis are no longer new. Totally loved the down home unassuming vibe of the mountain. Unfortunately on one trip down Overlook my wife took a big fall on some exposed dirt and rocks. Hurt her shoulder but she was able to bounce back. MRI tomorrow though. I also came upon a guy who was laying between a tree and a fence unconscious but breathing. Super scary stuff, but I was able to get help. Hope he ended up ok. I did about a million runs down Powder Puff and Lower Face with my kids. All in all we had a good day at Plattekill and I really want to go again when conditions are a bit better. Mountain View Me with the kids We we got dinner at the Russian restaurant at our motel which was awesome, had a couple brewskis and went to bed. Sunday morning we got up and hit Belleayre. A lot of closed runs, and glades of course were not in play, but the grooming was great. We did many many laps on the gondola which had a pretty quick moving line despite the huge Presidents’ Day crowds. My wife was a tough trooper skiing with her busted wing, and my kids continue to get a little better and have lots and lots of fun. Had an awesome rodeo burger in the summit cabin for lunch. In the afternoon when everything got scraped off I was grinding spines and surfing sugar on the sides of trails. Called it a day about 3 and bounced back home. Awesome 2 days of skiing. I always forget how many turns I make when I ski with my kids! I’m pooped! Little man cruising Ski bridge Wife and daughter Kids in gondola Wife and daughter again7 points

Trust Blue? LOL I broke my femur skiing Blue and you're worried about some rib pain. Harden the fuck up. You know what I did when Challenge opened for the first time the following year? Went as fast as I could down it. You're a self proclaimed libertarian....take some personal responsibility for your actions. When I hard charge down something without skiing it first, I take the risk that conditions might not be as I expect. I wouldn't blame anyone else if they weren't. Tough love, sorry.5 points

I just bought new ski pants at Buckmans..I haven’t been able to find ski pants I like in at least 9-10 years as I bought first pair of ride snowboard pants 13-14 years ago and exact same pair a few years later. Sucks pants that fit my waist have super long legs. I don’t know how Johnny Law does it. Found marker ski pants in the clearance..has this inner material which is weird..almost like mesh. Anyway I’ll figure out how to shorten the legs. Maybe with rubber bands. Least exciting purchase ever..5 points

Doesn’t matter how many runs you got in, the time you spent together is priceless! Cherish all the time(s) you have put there, as the time goes by so fast! The next thing you know they’re in college and the opportunity to spent time with them disappears. Sounds like it was a great time! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk4 points

It sucks that you got hurt, but I don't understand your last comment. You can't expect every hole, bump, rock, etc to be marked. In fact, you agreed to: What else do you want from Jim D? Money?4 points

I got some Patagonia pants last year after an instructor tipped me off about their Worn Wear site- yeah I was skeptical about the 'worn' part...but when they arrived turns out they were brand spankin new....got em for half price, great deal https://wornwear.patagonia.com/3 points

PTSD? I hit a tree this afternoon flying off the lip of a traverse, judo rolled to avoid a full frontal or head collision and took the full brunt of the hit on the left side of my back into a partial tree well. Knocked the wind out of me and I couldn't breathe for about 30 seconds. Took me 10 minutes to extricate myself from that due to my ski being buried under my ass in 2 ft of snow and couldn't use my poles to get up because the snow was so DEEEEEEEEEEEEP! Managed to ski out and do 2 more groomer runs. Came home and spent 2 hours plowing snow before my back cramped up. Ate some Celebrex, a 500mg Naprosyn and a shot of Jaeger, Slept for 3 hours. Back is sore as hell. Didn't piss or cough up any blood, so I'll prolly dial it back and ski groomers in the AM unless I can't move. I'll report back tomorrow if I had any nightmares about trees. More likely nightmares about Zero Gravity Madonna DIPA which I drank on the lift ride up.2 points

I’m sorry you got hurt. Heal quickly. But I have to agree with this. A big part of what’s wrong with this world, everyone wants to blame someone if they get hurt. We all have to take some responsibility for our actions.2 points

I don’t blame you for thinking you need a break from Blue. I think ski patrol failed you. They knew the feature/hazard needed to be marked but SP3000 enjoyed their turns right by it that morning without saying they should close it until they mark it. It reminds me of Paradise earlier this year(end of December?) was closed to start so ski patrol put bamboo up along the right side. I don’t get how it’s a new concept to mark everything before opening, sounds like lip service. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

At Blue 8 to 11 today, heavy cloud cover on the top half of the hill, cleared out from west to east sometime after 9. The chairs on the six had a decent coating of ice covering them. Mostly boiler plate to start, with random small glare ice patches, except main street which was good all day. Conditions improved as the day wore on. Me, Hiyata, and one other skier were the only people waiting at the gate for open. Few people on the hill until about 9:30, then the floodgates opened.2 points

Hey guys...been lurking here a long time, just reading reports and stuff...I bought the cheap season pass to Montage that was posted in this forum (I appreciate the heads up on that), so I think I at least owe a few reports. I've been riding most Saturdays since early January, but this is my first report. Got there around 8:30 and took a run down Cannonball. It was pretty firm which is what I expected, but not terrible. Next run I cut down Fast Track or Runaway (can't remember which) to get to the Long Haul. It has actually been running every time I've been there. Had a nice session IPA on the lift and did a few top to bottom runs. After that, lapped Boomer and Smoke a bunch. Conditions there were pretty good and softened up as the day went on. They mowed down the rollers and bumps on Boomer that were there two weeks ago. Did some nice faster runs, which was fun, but I did miss the bumps. Hit White Lightning once, which was ok but not great - firm and icy in spots. Left around 12 and stopped at Breaker Brewing for lunch. Beer was awesome as usual. I look forward to the brewery stop almost as much as the mountain. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the report. I'll try to post some more reports as the season goes on (or I could just keep updating this thread). I'm going to try to go most weekends. It's tough with a 1 year old at home, but I can usually get a morning session in.1 point

Hey All, I’m back from a fun sessson at Blue mountain the true mountain. The temperature was around 20 degrees and I was set on finding some new ski pants. Well I didn’t see any pants I liked so I skied in my khaki pants..I didn’t make first chair I was in the second PASR pack with Matt Edge, Schifdawg, Salty and Walt and Walt. Also in the House was everybody else.. Conditions were pretty nice except on lower Main Street and challenge which had cookies. Switchback was also spicy by smooth. Lazy and paradise had nice snow and sidewinder still has rollers. I tried the bumps once and they were pretty chalky with new blown snow. The highlight of today was of course sausage Sunday. So much great meat and nice weather. Ski2live and the twins were even out. JADIP1 point

You’re only punishing yourself. Sheesh the shit happens it’s why you’re supposed to look before you leap. My first run down sidewinder I almost got owned by the rollers. Root while I feel for you, shit like this happens everyday...if you don’t get a season pass at Blue next season it will only decrease the quality of your ski season.1 point

Looking back on the last 11 winters that we spent 12/26-2/18 in the pokes on weekends this has been the worst for snow conditions on and off the hill.1 point

Thanks. The dude had no helmet. At first I was panicked that I was gonna see a dead body, but when I got closer I saw he was breathing it was a relief, and another skier was right there so he stayed with him while I booked it down to get patrol. Hopefully it snows and stays cold for your March trip!1 point

I guess Doug should email JHole about his fall first run, it must have been someone else’s fault! Ruined his pow day, he was so soaked in sweat his goggles froze solid! Let’s be real if this happened at any other mountain it would have just been a fall, without an email. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Don’t be silly. I’m not about money but you knew that already. I probably have some mild PTSD, as every time I close my eyes, I see myself approaching the rollers in my minds eye. And every fucking time there’s still nothing I can do about it. I want to trust Blue again, but how does one go about doing that? Take Jim’s word for it they they won’t do something negligent again?1 point

He forgot the “we fucked up, let us do something to make it up to you since you can’t move your thumb and are going to PT 3x a week” part. Customer service isn’t always saying the right thing, it’s doing the right thing. I’m bias though. I have to deal with complaints as well, but I know a “sorry” is doesn’t always cut it. Going beyond lip service keeps them for the future and gives them a positive experience to remember, instead of the issue. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Sorry dude. The bright side is that he's probably giving you an honest answer. The downside is that the answer / reality is crap. How long does it take to mark an area, especially if it was on their to do "list"? If you deem something hazardous then don't open it until it's marked. IDK maybe I'm oversimplifying whatever their process is pre opening. Hope you're feeling better.1 point
-
It's alright. I still can't move my thumb properly or rotate my shoulder. Started PT on Friday, 3x a week. Gotta follow up with spine doc tho on the 25th.1 point
