  1. Tuesday - Alta Another bluebird day in the forecast and I’m a bit frightened of what the conditions at Alta are gonna be after a day of baking in yesterday’s sun. Since I’ve been here a few times before, I was designated tour guide, a responsibility I really didn’t want, but took on anyway. Drparted the house around 7:30 and up the LCC we went. As we approached Snowbird, we had to stop due to a fire truck blocking the road and smoke billowing from the area, but the smoke was white, so it must be steam. They finally let us pass to fina a 4-banger burnt to the ground and firefighters hosing it down. Arrived at the lot and managed VIP parking again because of our HOV. The temps were in the mid 20’s, which made it hard to decide on layers, but decided to drop the mid layer based in the forecast. In the house was Slim, Drew, Mike, Donny, Rick, Rick’s girlfriend Anna, my son Erich and yours truly. The kid & I booted up in the lot as usual, while the others went into the Gold Miner’s daughter. Clouds obscured Mount Superior and the upper ridge of Alta. Great! First no snow and now clouds. It was also quiet in line with no avy charges going off, sigh. Waiting in like for the lift, they made an announcement that they received an update overnight and would everyone please go to the gates to have their passes checked. A murmur in the crowd of “Probably Ikon” was heard. After a brief delay we were on the Collins lift, with everything above socked in. I made the executive decision to head out to Catherine’s to check it out. At the top of Catherine’s we found the area closed! WTF?? From the looks of it from the lift, there’s no reason it should be closed, geez! Maybe they were working on it? Decided on a warm-up lap and back up to see. In the way down, BOOM, an avy charge went off! That’s promising! Lapped the Supreme lift and ran into some other Blue Mountain regulars, so we skied with them. Since Catherine’s was closed, we bailed to the Sugarloaf lift. I chatted up a tele-skier ahead who had on some Sick Days. The liftie told him something just opened and they meet Defoe a run. Trying to get the deets, I asked the liftie if it was Catharine’s, but he said no, Castle! What? Devil’s Castle rope had just dropped?!?! Told the others that all the times I’ve been to Alta, Devil’s had not been opened and I was going, least of all right after a rope drop! Top of Sugarloaf the wind was howling, snow was blowing and clouds abound, but people were already piling up the traverse to the Castle. After a bit of “Are you going?”, a few decided against, but I, along with a few others started the hike. After a ton of side stepping and yes, more traversing (it is ALTA after all), we got to the Castle and dripped in on easily a foot or more of perder. We traversed across and each found a corridor of untouched snow and tore it up. Definitely the run of the day and made up for all the closed areas!! Too bad for those that didn’t test their will for the goods! After lunch at Alf’s, we rode up the Sugarloaf again and broke with the other Blue regulars. We headed around and back to the main area. Clouds still socked in most of the peaks, so knowing that Ballroom, below Baldy, can sometimes be clear, I suggested we head out there. Across the traverse (getting the gist yet?) and navigating a few bones, we dropped into Harrold’s that still held some wonderful snow. Off to Wildcat area to hit some tree runs. Rand into some kids hucking a jump and had some fun with them. Decided it was time to initiate a few in the group with the tow rope between bases. Up the Collins and down to Albion, forcing them the drudgery that is the tow rope lift. At this point the clouds broke and decided it was the perfect time for the (yes) High Traverse. Took the HT out to the end and crossed over the ridge and down into High Greely. After dropping a few hundred feet, I told everyone to stay on a high (again) traverse over to the end of the ridge. From there we dropped into Eagle’s Nest, Hourglass chute, Regal Chute, Rustler Four and Lower Rustler and down to the base. At this point my legs had had enough and was ready for beer(s). Decided to take the shuttle over to the Peruvian to show one of the guys the place and get a drink at the P-Dog, but it didn’t open until 3:30, so we checked the place out and headed bAck to the Gold Miner’s daughter for beers on the patio to complete yet another great day of skiing in Utah! Must be in the front row! Alta from GMD As seen on a lift chair ( Just for @GrilledSteezeSandwich) Smiles galore after skiing Devil’s Caslte Reppin’ Blue in Utah! And tagging it too! Another delicious dinner

  2. I guess you could say that, a few years ago I built our dining room table from a slab of sycamore that was 40”x7’. Most planers are not big enough for a slab that size so it is common practice to use something similar to the above to flatten the slab. I borrowed from what I learned there and adapted it to make the core profile. Rough slab Flattening the slab finished table Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  3. Nice quiet morning here. Snow is soft and fast. Not too windy. Ski right on quad. Sunny.

  4. I missed Blue a lot in late January/early Feb. But ive had a blast at JFBB the past few weekends. Might try and get up to blue to take advantage of the early pass sale before the end of the season if I'm able to. Ill definitely be back with a Blue and Peak pass next season. I certainly miss the HS lifts, vert and sausage Sundays.

  5. Rented a yurt in the town of Marble which is about 1 hr 20 min from Aspen. 4wd to access the property is no joke. Had to put the Jeep in 4low to get it up the last mile. Yurt 3 comfy futons inside View from porch Started snowing heavy that night and we woke up to this When all was said and done it was about 10” (pic was taken about 6:30am). We had to wait for the local plow guy to come through and make a pass before we headed out. Ended up doing a tour on McClure Pass. Just real mellow, didn’t want to do anything crazy with all the new snow. Depending on road conditions we may to a tour near Marble Peak tomorrow. Down another 4wd road but there is a quarry there so it is often plowed. Access road to yurt. To be continued...... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  9. I've been following Cody Townsend since he started the Fifty Project, a project to ski the fifty most iconic and classic backcountry lines in North America. There are some really great videos of earlier trips. Today's episode of Mt. Washington just dropped. Check it out.

  10. Nope, well north of the chic chocs. Polar star couloir on baffin island. Seems like a logistical nightmare to get to, let alone time correctly for favorable conditions. I'd guess it'd have to be a late spring mission when the chance of new snow is low, but i'm not the one tackling these so what do i know. https://fatmap.com/30907/Other/ski_tour/routeid/131846/Polar_Star_Couloir_

  12. Thats pretty sweet. i have always wanted to make a table out of a slab. i got bored last year (wasting time and money) and built a kitchen table just out of 2x8 fir that i beat the crap out of with chain, hammer, nails etc. Turned out pretty good, but i lack alot of tools for finish carpentry. I think i want to try putting a trail map down on a coffee table i made and doing that clear epoxy over it.

  30. Day 1 of 4 at Taos Ski Valley is in the books. Today was a warm spring day but everything up high over 10,500 or so was still winter conditions. I lost my phone at about 9:15 am, and then I miraculously found it about an hour later. Was skied over for sure and it’s a little fucked up but I was still able to take some pictures. West basin was closed for a free ride comp, but I did 2 Highline Ridge hikes, once to Ninos Heroes and once to Juarez. Rode the Kachina Peak lift twice also and hit the dogleg couloir which was extremely steep, really rocky and hard snow and it scared the shit out of me. Won’t ski that again this week. Next time up was K2 which was amazing. I had to ski off of a pretty huge cornice into the chute but the snow was real good and a sustained steep pitch for about 700 or 800 vertical I would say. skied Al’s on my way to the St Bernard for lunch and some other old favorites after lunch like Castor and North American. Skied for a bit with my wife and mom on groomers as well. Coverage is really good and the groomers are really nice. Should be a great week. I’m on my way to bronze god status also with the bright sunshine. base area and als kachina from the top of the ridge looking up ninos heroes top of K2 looking back up K2 Scenery, etc
