What's nice about this thread and all of them on this site so far is that the conversations have all been very civilized and enlightening by those with expertise in certain areas. It's a shame our government can't be that way. The system was designed for compromise.5 points

Local NPR station did coverage of EMT’s up in Teaneck. 20 yo 1st or 2nd year nursing students, etc working long shifts, sleeping in their cars to avoid exposing their family and using PPE gear held together with string and tape. One kid transported 6 bodies (as in dead) in one shift. I never heard a more powerful story on the radio in years All those fuckers who say “you are infringing on my rights to go where I want”, well know what? Walk a mile in the EMT shoes, suit up and help them. Otherwise STFU!!!!!!!4 points

One of my students is an EMT in Bergen county (maybe?). He has been somewhat forced into working extra shifts even while going to school full time because of how many calls they have been getting and many colleague have gotten sick and cannot work. He works overnight shifts, logs in to class for the day, and is helping his wife with teaching their kids who are home from school. The stories he shares are heartbreaking. It is enraging to see people acting like this while frontline healthcare providers are killing themselves to save lives.3 points

It's true. I work for the school with the largest endowment in the area, and when most or all of the returns on that money is used for financial aid, it means we still rely on tuition dollars, etc. Most international students pay full freight, which subsidizes some US based students who have a greater financial aid need. Not having students on campus means less dining revenue, fewer purchases in the bookstore....and most important of all, no housing income. In this new time, we still have all the costs associated with maintaining the facilities that now don't have a revenue stream and we still have to maintain all the academic infrastructure (technology, etc). Costs have gone down a little, sure. But revenue losses have far exceeded those costs. @NMSKI...there are only a few schools that can do what you claim...pretty much only the Ivys, but even then, not all of them. I'm sure you'll agree...never touch the principle. I do think it's ridiculous to give aid to cruise companies. They're 100% recreational. The airlines are a key part of our national transportation system, though. I have less of a problem there, however, I do think they should've been a little more fiscally responsible during their record growth/profit years of late.3 points

I read a couple days ago that a new "cannonball run" record was set because of the empty roads. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/cannonball-coast-coast-drive-record-set-amid-virus-shutdown-n11820113 points

Welp, union county infection rate is up to 1.5% now. While the overall state rate dropped to 3.1k new +‘s today (was 4.3k yesterday) UC rate increased. I guess the only good news is that means more testing is going on. Shout out to GSS for calling me a semi-pro bread baker2 points

The only reason I would support funding for the cruise industry is so that @NMSKI can get the family trip he has been waiting for. Other than that, screw them.2 points

Correct and what’s good about this thread is that we are getting all perspectives from essential workers to semi pro breadmakers to parents to Salty!!!!2 points

The donald has no problems helping out cruise companies because no danger of them delivering vote-by-mail ballots which he def is against. Postal service on the other hand...2 points

Also, how about the Ivy League colleges getting millions worth of aid, while their endowments alone are in the billions and grow tax free. All while continuing to charge tuition even though they could offer free education without even dipping into the principal. But guess what, all the rich asshole ex frat boy politicians went to these schools so its not at all surprising.2 points

im not a huge bagel eater, but, yeah theres bagels, and then there are really good bagels. A friend from the Poconos smuggles in a few dozen every so often from Long Island. Not sure why all bagels cant be that good. And, again, for the record, i dont think the bagels at the bagel place in JH are that good.2 points

They will cause there’s gonna be a lot less money to go around. In theory property taxes/school taxes should go down since school districts aren’t paying for bussing or water or lights or a lot of hourly employees like lunch lady’s. Your hourly breakdown is probably correct for younger kids..1 point

What Pennsylvania people call pretty good for bagels is different than NY/NJ folks. We used to have a couple good NY/Jewish style delis in the Lehigh valley and they’ve all closed down.1 point

My neighbor took these pics of 2 large cats roaming around around the corner from my house. Pic was taken about an hour after I walked home this way from skiing in the park. I really don’t know what I would do if I saw a couple lions walking down the street while I was exposed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

the valley is a bagel-starved place. i knew nothing but prepacked sleeves of bagels growing up. there's a place in margate (two locations, actually) called "Hot Bagels" that makes a bangin jalapeno bagel with horseradish cheddar cream cheese spread.1 point

I'm a fan of this series. I posted it on Random Thought Thread a couple days ago. The only downside is it makes me want to be on mountains.. Comparing the recent videos to the first 10, the sound, picture quality, and drone footage really improved.1 point
