What an absolutely pleasant evening at the only ski area that was open at 736 last Sunday evening. I love spring snow so the snow is easily the best I've skied all year. Midway isn't too terrible. I thought it would be worse. Lower main still has goodcoverage and it's fairly flat so I can cruise down to the bottom. Same with Vista. I haven't skied come around yet tonight but here's your obligatory early season come around picture. Nice evening on Mont. Blu. Shame about the shit weather6 points

Can't wait to fly to Arizona to get to the cold / snow. 20 inches last week with more in the forecast for this week. What a world.6 points

I would agree. I am really just focused in on Sunday evening and beyond, with what look to be our best shot at decent snowmaking temps to date. What happens this weekend? Who knows. But i bet the beer in the lot will taste good. Gonna focus in on the positives, rather than complain about the things that are out of our control. Plus, i only have like 3 more days of work this year.5 points

No worries here. I’ll just head up to JF on Sunday. At least we got an expected date on the valley.4 points

I must have low standards because it was better than I thought it would be. Some smooth on Vista and the rest was rowdy but fun rowdy. Saw mute and fam going to get my pass fixed, little one was killing it and even cut somebody off which is a pasr move for real lol lol They issued me a new pass but it still doesn't scan but the second time I went it she was on the phone with the IT guy talking about my account. It almost doesn't matter now anytime the lifties see purple helmet they open it up.4 points

Hey All, I’m back from a fun morning session at Blue mountain the true mountain. I arrived at the upper lot at 830 and it was in the upper 40s under mostly cloudy sky’s. In the house were mute, Ryan, atomic jeff, Johnny Law, Slim, Gary and Bethlehem ford guy. The snow was hero snow, my favorite kind of spring snow..soft and fast..pretty smooth for the first hour and got a little choppier the last run or two. Midway is thinner than I’ve seen..pretty brown and pebbles. They should make it until the cold arrives Sunday night but it’s gonna be rough. I then had a beer in the lot and enjoyed the warm breeze for about an hour. I might be out tomorrow AM or in the rain Saturday but likely not until Sunday AM...JADIP3 points

If not for liberal shitholes this state would make west virgina look like Monaco. Red states far far far and away consume more tax dollars than they bring in because red areas are poor. Red states are 9 out of the top 10 federal government whores and the blue state is VT which is .00000001% of a state like Mississippi. Conservatives are all like Rand Paul bleat like a retarded goat and deny hurricane sandy funds but when habitually poor and eternally shitty Kentucky gets hit with tornados Mr self sufficiency is first in line on his knees sucks Joe's dick for money. Abortion, taxes, the list goes on and on and on what being a modern conservative mostly is endless noise about how shit everyone is for taking x handout until they need it.3 points

Amtrak named a new CEO. https://www.wsj.com/articles/amtrak-names-a-new-ceo-ahead-of-federal-infusion-of-funding-11639593002?mod=hp_lead_pos11 Big Takeaways: 1. Amtrak is getting $22B from the federal government. It also will have access to an additional $44 billion in grants, with government and private sector partners, aimed at improving and broadening U.S. passenger rail service. 2. First order of business with the cash is pay off the new trains they just ordered from Siemens at a cost of $3.4B. Which works out to around $46.5M per train. 3. They seem to have a well laid plan for how to spend money now that they have it but it was not detailed in the article.3 points

It's currently 63 degrees at my house so with that it mind it's actually remarkable. Soft and fast and not too uneven. Super perfect way to spend a morning. Just saw their ig post, makes total sense but fuuuuuck what the hell am I going to do this weekend ? Christmas stuff with the fam ? I'm amazed they are projecting 22 trails by the 26th but I'm down for Kool-aid drinking. Needless to say I'll be up tomorrow am2 points

Philly and other cities kind of stand out as islands though. I would say that most places are just parts of an isthmus or perhaps a tightly spaced archipelago. If you travel from Scranton through Harrisburg and down to the suburbs of Pittsburgh there realistically won't be too much change that you encounter, but the second you cross the Hudson into New York or City Avenue into Philadelphia things are different. Not saying it's bad, but it's noticeable.2 points

I was there yesterday. Grand total of 14 runs. Most this season. Didn’t think Midway was that bad. First couple runs a little sketchy, but after that I enjoyed it. A beer at the bar, more runs, then a delicious tailgate. Lovely day. I won’t be back until next Tuesday , hoping things improve.2 points

To be honest I don't know whether or not they actually need to be upgraded but they claim that the old trainsets are worn out (they're only 20 years old, so idk, some of Amtrak's equipment is much older than that). The old trainsets were supposed to tilt when they go around corners but in their infinite wisdom they made them too wide to tilt around corners while maintaining clearance. The new ones are actually supposed to be able to tilt and go a little bit faster. The new trainsets are a lot lighter weight, the federal rules regarding crashworthiness were recently changed- they used to basically have to be heavy and remain rigid in a crash and as a result were all unique designs to North America. Now they define crumple zones or something but I guess that's what Europe does, and they can use European designs now. The main reason I think is that the new ones will look a lot flashier on the inside and outside for publicity. I will kind of miss the big stainless steel American designs though if the passenger trains around here all end up getting replaced with European designs.1 point

I was thinking that as well. I have an Xmas party Saturday night so can get extra Lit.1 point

Well said. I've always been fascinated how these poor states largely vote against their own self interest. This is an interesting wiki to brush up on how it came to be that some of the poorest states historically vote Republican. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy LBJ was a cold motherfucker and this quote is rough: "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."1 point

It's a gem. Think Central America connecting North and South America. Or, think about the small patch of snow connecting the Blue Mountain courtyard pavers to the land of opportunity known as Vista. We need to geography thread.1 point

Skied 530-730 and stayed on Vista. Def spring snow but not the worst. Boo took a lap to the Main Street chair and confirmed it was rowdy. Saw Johnny Law heading in to hopefully get his pass fixed. I under estimated how warm it was and had all my vents open. We could see the melt flowing and hopefully it doesn’t hurt them too bad until the cold shows up. Back at it tomorrow to see what’s left.1 point

Fun night. 12 runs with 3 or 4 coming off vista chair lapping the park. I looooove spring conditions so I’ll never complain about a night like tonight.1 point

I’ve been going overboard studying the nyc subway recently. The current system is only half of what was originally planned to be built. The amount of abandoned tunnels, abandoned stations, shell stations, bell mouths, and provisionals is amazing. There are parts of the tunnels not even the MTA knows exists. I have always wanted to explore the tunnels but that seems like something you need someone to show you. Gotta worry about getting hit by a train, touching the third rail, getting your foot stuck in a track switch, getting seen by train operators and cops, plus motion sensors in emergency exits and pump rooms and vent shafts. hipsters and the media gave away the location of the abandoned Chinatown tunnel from the 70s and gave away the location of the south 4th street shell station. Fortunately the street art in the shell station was dissed before the city sealed it off. Both these places are now permanently sealed shut.1 point
