Last week I was in Vegas to present at a conference. Other than some really good restaurants way off the strip, that city sucks. So I drove to Death Valley to do some hiking through the Golden Canyon and Red Cathedral, check out the lowest point in North America at Badwater Basin, and catch a desert sunset, and an incredibly clear sky filled with stars and the Milky Way. At a cool 110 degrees during the day, it was a bit toasty, but it dropped down to 88 degrees once the sun went down and felt a lot better. Really cool place and nice to check off another national park.11 points

Here's an idea saltman. Instead of voting in a Facebook poll....don't support vail by purchasing an epic pass every year. That's the only poll they care about.4 points

All of my negativity toward Vegas is a direct result of me being totally out of control and doing stupid shit a number of times. All of my high school friends live in either Phoenix, LA or Albuquerque, and I did about 2 Vegas bachelor parties per year for a decade. Lots of good old family fun can be had I'm sure, but I'm a piece of shit and should not be allowed to go without significant supervision.4 points

Ever notice how the people walking around the casinos are mostly obese, have walkers and oxygen tanks to breathe? It’s like the biggest concentration of unhealthy people in one place.3 points

It definitely puts an asterisk next to the achievement. I cannot disagree.3 points

I was there. I didn't see U2, though. You would have enjoyed the sky at night. It was the second best I've seen, only to Urabamba, Peru where there is absolutely no light pollution. Seeing shooting stars all over the place. The Milky Way was stunningly present. It was just incredible.2 points

fyi - i sorta think the space heater is cheating, but continue on.2 points

I use a space heater in the bathroom for when I get out of the shower. Turned that baby on this morning, but I'm not going to light the pilot light for the heater until i'm at my breaking point. Gonna try for no-heat November again this year.2 points

Honestly, I assumed it was the haul rope, and started doing a bunch of calculations to see if the weight to length ratio makes sense after @AirheadD8's comment. I was figuring the volume of treating 1 foot of rope as a sphere (from Comcast Jeopardy I happen to know that 1/4 inch zinc coated steel wire weighs .121 lb per foot and 3/8 inch weighs .270 lb per foot, lol) and I went to the pic and zoomed to see if it had the diameter on it to compare. When I saw what it said the 25PR immediately jumped out at me, since that's the standard telephony grouping for twisted pair. The AWG was obvious, and I figured the 1/4 must be a messenger since 25 pair would be larger than 1/4 inch. Then I googled, lol. But yeah, telecom cable can be several inches in diameter for trunk cables, 500+ pair. Makes a good support for laying your ladder against at the mid-span 😂2 points

Expensive visit to Buckman's today, even with Pro discount; I got new Atomic Hawx 100 boots, Atomic AMID Visor helmet and wife got Salomon S/Pro 80 boots. Let the stoke begin. Learned something today, new boot soles out there, WalkGrip. Need to change out the removable plates at toe and heel to fit bindings unless you have latest bindings. Different shape to the soles and won't fit the toe of binding especially. Ask if you are getting boots!1 point

I leave the heat off at night to sleep, which is fine but it’s freezing when I wake up. I then turn on the heat in the bedroom and bathroom when I wake up so it’s warm when I shower and get dressed, then turn it off til the next morning1 point

I should actually say the strip just doesnt appeal to me. It just kind of seems to be repetitive. Like, it just repeats itself every 300 feet or so. casino, strip joint, hot dog stand, t shirt shop, spencers gifts, casino, strip joint, hot dog stand, spencers gifts........ Everything we did, we did outside of the strip. There was almost no reason for us to be staying on the strip, but i guess when you go to Vegas, thats what you do. Its just a little over the top for me.1 point

I also don't really get why there's such negativity towards Vegas. It can be really fun for a few days.1 point

I have to go to vegas for a wedding in the middle of November and I'm dreading it. We are getting there 2 days early and taking a quick side trip to Zion which will be nice though.1 point

Vegas is awesome. I went in 2016 and walked the strip, ascended Stratosphere, rode ATVs in the desert, spent $20 in casinos, and drove to Area 51 for an alien burger. I have no idea why you guys are saying it sucks.0 points

Unfortunately I have a wedding to go to, so I'm out. Will be there in spirit. Looking forward to seeing everyone in the lot real soon!0 points
