  1. Hey All, I’m here in Jackson hole with Atomic Jeff and Mute, NMSki and Dirtwolf arrive on Thursday. Flight from Newark was at 10:09am EST and me and atomic Jeff arrived at the Jh airport at 12:46pm MST. Went to the 49er, rooms weren’t ready yet. Back to the airport and picked up Mute from his Chicago flight. Back to the 49er, Mutes room was ready and me and AJeffs not ready. We then went to the brewery for a late lunch and finally checked in. Gonna relax a little and then maybe have some supper. It’s super warm in town, upper 30s and not much snow. Looks like the mountain should ski well due to the 5-6 feet they’ve received the past two weeks. Also some snow shower activity. Not many pictures so far, the cloud ceiling was low so I didn’t take any pics from the sky.

  2. Rode today from 9-1. Fun times and not too crowded. Rained a bit in the morning which was annoying, but no biggie. As C1 said, sixer had some off and on issues. About half off my runs were razors

  3. Did a nice walk on D&L Sunday, started at Glen Onoko. Saw some cross country skiers. I’d love to try it, husband not interested, unfortunately. I already have one hobby that takes me away most of the winter. Don’t need 2.

  4. Took the afternoon away from work today to get in some last minute XC strides and glides before the snow all melted away. Stopped at Illick's Mill and Monocacy Park to check things out and ended up taking the tracks out and back to explore that area. Super quiet and peaceful back there along the water which is what I love about taking these out. Just a lovely afternoon.

  5. 1/23/24 It’s the wife’s birthday “week”, so decided to head up to New Hampshire to celebrate by hitting a bunch of ski slopes on Epic & Indy passes, even through she no longer skis. Outta the house at 6am to stay ahead of any potential feeeIng rain which was successful, as we only encountered a few sprinkles along the way. Rolled into the first stop of the trip at Crotched Mountain. Interesting little hill that would be perfect for beginners, lots of variety of trails and the diamonds aren’t really all that challenging. The mountain is outta the way, so I ended up skiing right onto the lift every run, even with it being Primary day in New Hampshire. Snow was in excellent condition with chalky goodness everywhere, so there was no fear of setting an edge and arcing a turn. The whole mountain has a space theme to it, with the park even named NCC-1701 for all the Trekkies out there. Also had a Rocket Fuel IPA at the bar afterwards. Not a super challenging place, but was able to find a fun line right down under the only lift they had running today. Just a one-under-the-gun on the Epic pass.

  6. Some early evening riding at BC....Lil under 2 hours...When I got there they had the trails roped off going to the F lift side...Squirreled my way around and got to Broadway only to see the F chair spinnin empty....Stopped a SP and he told me 5-10 there droppin ropes....Never found out what the problem was....Snow got creamy with the slight warm up...Real zero to hero stuff...Even as it cooled down snow held up.....NASTAR was settin up shop too....Super fun evening....

  7. First night session of the year for me 5:45 start . Things were firming up from earlier Main st not fun marbles near the bottom. Coming soon ditch was ok with some thin spots. Paradise wasn’t bad . Razors was really nice on the sides up top but got a little thin and the runout was rather shiny. Fun night got better as the surface got skied over a bunch.

  8. No, the lifties at F aren't playing death metal, at least during the morning LOL. Was up today and the snow was maybe the best in a few years. Did the official Sasquatch to B, across Broadway and then either TImberline/Broadway/HoChiMinh and back up F to Sasquatch. Grizzly was almost ROTD except Sasquatch was so sweeeet. Crowds more normal today. FWIIW 7 minutes from gate at F, up F, Sasquatch, to gate at B. All in all today, JADIP.

  9. Today was nice. Light mist turned to light rain by the time I left at 11. Everything was in really good shape, hero snow. They closed razorback, and the lower part of razors for slalom practice, so you had to exit at the crossover to Falls. Lazy, Main St., Widowmaker, were in really good shape, they got a little soft, but never snow piles or slushy. The only complaint was that the right side of lower main had a lot of groomer bumps, and that’s where I skied to avoid the schussboomers coming down from Midway along the left side which was a lot smoother. Summit lift had some problems off and on, and the quad got a little crowded sometimes but not too bad. Slopes were pretty crowded by the time I left, but not as bad as yesterday. They desperately need another wide slope, like sidewinder, to open up to take some of the pressure off other slopes. All in all, one of the better days on the mountain. Switched from my RTMs to my Head Kores about 1030 and they handled the soft stuff a lot better.

  10. I agree. I just skied Berkshire East this past Saturday. They do a great job and would be a good match for Elk. They did a good job with Catamount so far. Elk could add some glades and a high speed lift but otherwise leave it alone. Corporate ownership would ruin Elk.

  11. I sure hope not. Dealing with vail has led me to ride less. My experience at hunter a few weeks back was so atrocious I haven’t ridden since. Elk seems to be doing fine the way they are. that being said, the place is not used to its potential. Mountain biking and other summer events would be great there. if it was to get sold, I would hope it’s to the family that owns catamount and Berkshire east. It would be on a multi-pass but not of epic proportions. And those dudes have done fantastic stuff at Berkshire, catamount, and bosquet.

  12. Years ago I took a class thru one of the state parks in the Poconos. I am sure there are places that offer cheap intro classes for you to try it. You can get a setup pretty cheap, especially used. Don’t let your husband’s lack of enthusiasm stop you. I say try it! A quick search showed free lessons at this state park. Trail pass $15 https://paccsa.org/paccsa-ski-lessons

  14. Same. I like the weekends late season. Soft snow, no lines, and fun parking lot.

  15. How did I not know that Crested Butte had a free Nordic section all these years? There is an elaborate trail system you have to buy a pass for but there are a few free loops. Went to the resort this morning to extremely flat light. I took exactly one run and decided to leave. I hate that my stupid old eyes just can’t see, just not worth it. So left and got my XC set up and my friend and I did a lap on the “poop loop” which is the dog friendly loop. Fingers crossed visibility is better tomorrow.

  16. I got started at Greek Peak's Nordic Center years ago, definitely worth checking out with rental gear if not a lesson. The closest XC center is probably high point NJ. There was another one around Williamsport but not coming up on the goog There's a lot of cheap used stuff out there these days but it takes a little bit of knowledge/time to sift through to get something you'll enjoy. For someone starting who wants to do ungroomed rail trails, golf courses, parks etc I'd look forNNN BC stuff, its a little wider and more stable than classic track NNN meh better that nothing, get some altai hoks!

  18. Im not sure on the park thing on NMDW. Need to factor in the weather a little. Snow making temps are gone for a week or so now, we knew it was gonna come to an end today, and then rain. So, to me, it seems like there is a decision to be made. Keep pumping snow on trails so they have a good base, or stop at what will get them open, and move on. I am in the minority that would have kept pumping snow on challenge and NMDW, rather than move over to side (which will require tons of snowmaking), and switch, just to lay down some snow, and watch it rain. Take a close look at lower main. it doesnt have a good base, and since like 15 trails come together there, it could be a problem later in the season. Last year, NMDW was open, but if you remember, it sucked, pretty much all the time. there wasnt enough snow on it. the first 2 turns were narrow, couldnt really get your groove on. I dont remember challenge being steller any time i skied it either. the whole quality over quantity might apply here.

  19. Dammmmn...I was there tonight... Rode from 5 to 6:30ish....All from the F chair...Place filled up fast...Snow was really nice.....I was on skis and had green pants on ..not the orange ones I usually wear....I wish the lift line wasn't such a cluster fuck of humanity....Some slight knee stiffness but nothing that stopped the fun....

  22. Enough VT resorts already bought up, please don't let this one get ruined too! Can just see paid parking, pay to use the cabin, half the lifts closed mid week to save money.

  23. When you gotta work during the day I'm just glad that skiing is still an option afterwards. Although I'm clearly not as stoked on night skiing as I used to be. Now a days im happy to hold off on night sessions until the sunset spring sessions kick in. Those evenings can be magical. I skied tonight because I missed this weekend and was jonesing to ski, plus the shit weather kicks in tomorrow I think

  24. If you can go when it's supposed to snow that's the way. Pow pow is part of the Jay dealio and as good as it can be it can also be equally terrible and hyper icy

  29. Figured out what was giving me problems with my bindings. Was actually my boots! Watched the video posted on here- everything looked as it should be. Husband then looked at my boot heels. They are in some sad shape from wearing them in the lot, plus I have about 6 seasons on them. Bottom of heel was so curled up from walking in them, they were getting caught on the brakes! He shaved it off, I had no problem yesterday. Called Buckmans 2-4 weeks for new heel pieces. Not sure it’s worth it. Maybe time for new boots

  30. I’ve had an Ikon pass multiple years now, and I do like it. But we’re talking about going to a couple mountains next season that aren’t on any mega pass.

  31. i couldnt agree more, but Elk is so funny. no tree skiing. hardly any discounts. no indy pass. no fucks given. dont wanna ski here? we dont care. But at some point, the fun of owning a ski resort has to wear off.

  33. Yeah, I miss the days of skiing right on to the lift. Today was a beautiful day, though. Lines not bad, and VIP lines were open.

  34. Damn, yeah it was pretty last minute so no big deal but I was on F lift most of the evening too. Grizzly and sasquatch were good...extreme was a sheet of ice. There was a fundraiser or something today with $25 tickets, which may explain the crowds.

  35. Was up this morning and skied until noon. Snow was great! ROTD was Grizzly into either Broadway skiers right or under the F chair. Skiers right of Griz was nice and fluffy all morning. Sasquatch was very nice, soft and easy to ski. Was a decent crowd all morning, surprising. Must be people trying to get the good conditions before end of week rain. Lots of kids, surprised by that.........

  36. I don't know the schedule anymore as I don't night ski all that much but it used to almost never be open at night. Lots of college and high schools practice plus I think they don't want that many people on it. When NMDW is open with no features it's better as is switch, rasins you can literally fall down and it's almost always the hardest snow on the hill. I think it's best when in the slush when it gets more 3d and you can mix in some airs.

  37. Been keeping an eye on Montage, Elk and Shawnee which all have been far more peaceful on the weekend and holidays. The multi passes def make a difference but Blue is still the best terrain option in NEPA imo. I love weekdays at Blue. I gotta be feeling extra itchy to even come out and deal with the weekends.

  38. It's not crazy busy and the snow is really good. Chalky in most places... Some slick overall really nice. Razors is closed for racing. Guns are a blaze. Good night sesh

  40. My skis are fat and don’t fit in the track. I will say that you lose energy transfer outside of the track as the skis naturally go sideways a bit. When in a track all that energy is just propelled forward. But yes, it’s a great area. I will be here most of the week and will try to hit it daily. Just a good bit of cardio.

  41. It's super weird but it's like lemmings or something where they all show up en masse all at the same resort. Almost all of UT has been insane this year but apparently it's generally only one of the resorts that is way worse than the others. Two weeks ago they 4hr redsnaked Basin, while everywhere else is relatively empty, two days later you can't get to the bird but Alta was empty. A parking reservation at Brighton is like trying to get a table at Delilah at the Wynn but when you get there it's ride on. None of it makes any . I have and have had an ikon I'm not hating but they gotta figure the numbers out because for whatever reason they seem to all pick the same places.

  44. Hi Doug. How is the Yoccos?
    1 point
  45. It opened around 7 after they took down the gates, but it was realllllly slick. What I couldn't necessarily understand was why main and lazy were top to bottom guns a blaze but nothing on switch or side. Challenge is close and Nightmare dreams whales are massive. They're clearly going for straight park on NMDW otherwise I have to think it would've opened it has so much snow.

  46. That will be rad if Ikon acquires Elk Mountain. New hotel resorts, high speed lifts, uber paid parking. They can turn Elk Mountain into a radical resort just like Camelback!
