Good Mountain for a noob like me?
Justo8484 replied to darklordofsys's topic in Jack Frost & Big Boulder
get your kids out this year. i wouldnt necesarily start them on a board, since 4 or 5 is pretty young to have the muscle development needed to control a snowboard, but both my brother and i started skiing when we were 3. -
ok where to start... first, what kind of skis do you have? judging by your username, i'd assume you have juvy's? if thats the case, i'd probably not center mount them just due to the construction of that ski and how thin it gets in front of the recommended binding mounting. k2 skis in general have the recommended mounting point very far back on the ski. my fujatives have the recommended point at 12cm back from true center, and i mounted them at 2cm back from true center, which works out really well for me. i've skied skis that are designed to be mounted true center, like the invaders and head mojos, and they definitely do not ski as well all mountain as my fujatives do. center mounting a ski makes it cut into a turn quicker and easier, but want to hang on to that turn longer and harder, since you have to much tail behind you. like papa said, if you're still learning how to ski, keep the skis mounted where they are. he's right, the people who make riding a center mounted ski look easier are those of us who have been skiing for years and learned how to ski correctly before terrain parks even existed. learning how to ski right will help you in every facet of park riding.

skifreak knows whats up. come in during ski mania which is some time in august, i wanna say 3rd weekend? we will have all the leftovers from last year, and most of the new stuff for this coming season as well. if your foot is skinny like mine, rampages might be the ticket, i love mine.

missed that one, my bad

good price on the skis, not great prices on the bindings. also, how can they legally get away with mounting peoples bindings? i can understand how its ok if the boot is new, bought from them, since they would physically have the boot, but mounting a pair of bindings then running a binding check on them isn't exactly possible if you don't have the person's actual boot. sure, you can use a pair off the shelf thats the same model as theirs, but if their boot is used, it would test out differently than a brand new boot due to wear on the toe and heel lugs. i couldn't find anywhere on their site where it suggests that you get the bindings checked by a local shop once you get them either. seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen with today's sue-happy culture.

what kind of skis were they that the tips broke off? i had a pair of old 1080s with the stupid caps on them and the caps just flew off one time, and i just popped them back on. they don't do anything. its just a plastic piece the company puts on the tip to give it a rounded or pointed shape instead of a blunt or notched shape. unless there are rivets associated with the cap, it does absolutely nothing structurally. and you don't need to do anything to protect the tips. if you're riding park, your skis will get beat up, end of story. if your skis dont get beat up, then you're not pushing yourself to learn new stuff. if you're just starting out in the park, expect your skis to last two years, maybe three tops. if you compare that to the cost of renting skis every time you go out, 300 or 400 for a pair of skis doesnt seem like such a bad deal. if you're really worried about durability and your tips blowing up, get k2. all their park skis have rivets through the tips, and are pretty much indestructible. i rode the silencers for about 60 days this year, and besides some chunks taken out of the bases from hitting some rocks and stairs, they're in really good shape. i'd sell them cheap if they're the right size for you.

yeah and no one pays that

atomics would have them... and they dont do anything to affect how the ski skis. why do you want them? if you're concerned about the ski delamming, don't be, if its a new ski, just tape them up or glue them, then send them back to the factory at the end of the season, and you get brand new ones. also, finding brand new, current season stuff with bindings for under 250 is not going to happen. the cheapest twins on the market (k2 silencer or line invader) come in at 299 retail. you could find them for about 250 during preseason sales, but thats without bindings. for bindings, you're going to be looking at about 129 for salomon z10s or look px12/rossi axl2 120s, and given that the look/rossi binding is way more solid, unless you arent heavy enough, its stupid to go with the salomon. give me more specific information and i can point you in a better direction. such as: how tall are you? how heavy are you? how strong of a skier are you? what aspects of freeriding are you most likely to spend most of your time? jumps, rails, pipe, all mountain, trees, pow? get back to me and i'll give you more specific info. 575 for those skis new? thats a rip off.

they put more parking in before this past season, and no, the new trail wont be open

the 120 number is very misleading. my bro skied them this year, and i had them on for a while in the shop, and they're nowhere near as stiff as my old fr120s were. he didnt even take the bolts out of the back either. they're a really awesome boot if they fit your foot and your budget. they are almost twice as expensive as the rampages unfortunately.
-
i can't give a fair judgement on the ar5, since i only skied them in a 176 which is too short for me, but they felt a little stiffer than the ar6 did to me, but th ar6 i was on was mounted at true center. and if you have a narrow foot, check out the kryptons, salomon gun, or lange wc120 freeride, since those are all pretty narrow. getting a smaller size in a super wide boot won't do the trick.
-
have you ever skied the ar6? my buddy has a pair and they are just as soft as my fujatives are, if not softer, which makes them pretty similar to the invader flex wise. also, anything from lange fits very differently than the spk does.

take your slanderous remarks elsewhere, greg will not be happy

i'd rather not sit in the shack or spend $335, thanks.

ha you guys are such butt buddies

24 feet is much better. i'd assume 8 foot sections? i'd put coping on it, even if it is just pvc. any sort of flat sheeting material will get eaten up, a la the tiger box at bear a few years back. they made a 20 foot flatbox with just plastic sheeting, no coping, and by the end of the first weekend the thing was out, people were ripping edges out on screws cause the topsheet got worn away so fast. pvc is cheap and really easy to work with, so i'd recommend at least using pvc coping.

short = waste of time and money. build a real box.

its cool dan, it was a gnarly cliff

i avoid the px heel like the plague

ray was the old dude who was frequently sitting in the cafeteria with his wife drinking coffee. for some reason, whenever i saw him, he had green corduroy pants on. he was a real nice guy to me when i worked at blue, he actually cared about the employees. and dan, as far as the park passes, from what i've heard, ray was always the biggest opponent to them, so who knows, maybe it will happen now, but i think that depends entirely on who takes over, who stays, and who goes. there are certain people i really would not miss seeing when i go up to blue to ski next season.

i guess i'm not the only one... everything looks overexposed and oversaturated, especially the snow and everything that was green.
