  1. Hit the slopes at 8:15, lapped challenge, rivershot and challenge glade. Slopes rippin fast. Cold (about 20) and a little foggy. Blowing snow on Floyds still. Didn't see anyone going off elevator yet. Tried upper elevator glade a couple of times, wasn't pretty at all, but made it through ok with only minor damage to my ego. Easier now than when the bumps between the trees get huge. Second day on my eBay special 164 PEs. Like them a lot. Fast and easy to turn. Did one park glade. Nice and mellow. Then a couple runs of exhibition bumps. They blew snow over them last night, so they are getting into shape. Taking a break around 11. No lift lines (didn't share a lift all morning - not taking a shower probably helped) and if you pick your slope, no one in front of you. Race kids on the right side of lower challenge.
  2. He is the guy in front of me in the glade - Dan.
  3. Some videos from a new GoPro helmet cam (wide angle, but not the hi def one). No music either. Like the way the trees just bent out of my way when I went past them in the glade Challenge Glade http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bCeBnbqdq0 Challenge Glade with Dan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aHzQuVC5z0 Solitude and River Shot (blowing snow on Floyds) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWg3jJ7Qnes And finally, by Every Trail log. 4. If you have a micro adjust buckle, you can twist the buckle part (on the outside of the boot) to screw it in or out. If you don't have that, or need more adjustment, you can unscrew the receiver part of the buckle (on the inside of the boot, and move it (along with the nut) to another of the pre-drilled holes. It is a standard torx type screw with a little nut on the inside of the plastic part of the boot between the plastic and the liner.

  6. 2/13 means my hands were too cold to type in 12/18.
  7. Beautiful day, cold at start but a little warmer now. Challenge and one park glades are great. Elevator is very scratchy and lumpy at bottom. They seeded some moguls most of the way down the left side of exhibition. They just need some tlc to smooth them out. Come on people - lets get them skiied into shape.
  8. Top to bottom, both Challenge and the new One Park glade.
  9. Slow skiing sign? What are they? Got some eBay PEs. Could see the shadow of the rooster tails coming off the backs out of the corner of my eye.
  10. Pretty quiet. No crowds until about 11 (i.e. I didn't have the slope all to myself anymore). Skied a few runs with Dan. They were thinking about opening East Mtn in the afternoon, but I don't think they did.
  11. Jack Frost auxiliary crew clearing out the side of Challenge glade. [
  12. Challenge glade. Sunny, warm, fast and smooth. No lift lines. Open slopes n
  13. Flickr changed their website, so I was testing uploading photos from my iPhone for those chair lift reports

  15. Looks like we are not getting another week - they lost a lot of snow since Friday (even with r_a_d_i_a_t_i_o_n_a_l cooling overnight). Did the elevator a couple of times, did Floyds, ran the season pass holders race (didn't wait around for the results, so I can delude myself that I did pretty well), after they opened Challenge ran the glades several times (amazing that for the whole season, no trees jumped out in front of me), and spent the rest of the time on Exhibition bumps (pretty small now, just my style). Grabbed some chicken and pierogies (only in the coal country of PA would you find pierogies at a ski area - they are more popular than french fries at the local high school football game) and hit the road. 68 degrees when I left. Time to put storage wax on the skis (may stop at BB before it closes, though). Got our passes for next year, going to be a long wait.
  16. 42 at 8 am. Partly sunny but clouds are rolling in. Frozen cord (maybe from radational cooling). Lost a lot of coverage at the bottom of C glade from Friday.
  17. Sounds great - should be up there first thing tomorrow. I'll be in a green softshell instead of my usual (thanks steep and cheap).
  18. And would imagine there is a difference between skiing slush on a board and on skis. Hard getting those skis to turn together when you have to push then thru mashed potatoes.
  19. Sorry, would have labeled it but I thought everyone would recognize it. It's Elevator and the point of the picture is that skiers left is still very skiable. Great day, would still be there if I hadn't had a dental appt. Sucks getting old. They didn't tell you when they were putting the fillings in that they would all have to be replaced in 30-40 years.
  20. C glade is sweeeeet and still deep (cept for the far edge). Twice as challenging-avoiding the trees and the blow downs. No bumps though, perfectly flat and carveable - like before Christmas.
  21. Last tr of the season? Be out boating tomorrow. 55 degrees and sunny. A little mashed potatoes on top but the slopes are still a little crusty. Coverage on slopes is good, no holes. Left side of elevator skiable, Floyds bumps are nice and soft, C glade looking a little bare, but you can get down most of it.

  23. I think most campgrounds would still be closed until things unfreeze. Promised land state park has some winter sites, but thats 25 miles from Elk as the crow flies.
  24. I had the 'grabbies' a week ago in the warm sunny conditions, even though I waxed with Swix Red a couple of days earlier - it felt like suction getting me rather than the wrong wax. I checked and saw that whoever had the last stone grind done (used skis) didn't put any structure on it. I used my Ski Man Base Planer with the coarse stone to put on an aggressive structure (the rilling tool that does a more professional job at structuring is beyond my budget), sanded with 800 wet paper, steel rotobrushed, and did some hot scrapes. Put on red wax again, and it was nice and slick on Sunday. Have to see how they do in sunny conditions. Out of Dominator zoom old snow race wax - that's usually pretty nice for warm snow.
  25. Coverage was fine on Sunday morning, except for the bottom bumps of Exhibition. There were no chunks out or streams cutting through the slopes. Some refrozen slushy areas, but easily avoided. A lot of twigs and stuff on the trails from the high winds on Saturday. Don't know how the rain this morning affected things. Use your old skis if you want to ski the glades or Elevator. With the temps above freezing at night, the trails will be soft, so my groomer skis are retired for the year, and my rock skis are waxed up. Didn't see any of the trail hazards they apparently saw over at Blue this weekend.
