Nice trip report, some nice classic VT pictures. Sometimes I miss the VT mountains, had some great times up there.

A bit off track for this thread, but I have to take exception to this. I looked at the reviews of my local resorts and it doesn't seem like he has any real knowledge of this area. Yes, he loves Squaw (who doesn't) and his views of Alpine are pretty much on target, but apart from his obvious dislike of snowboarders, his views on sugarbowl, as elitist and expensive are way off. He is also talking about the Northstar of a few years back before the "Ritz-ification", anyone going there now would see a very different resort (and not in a good way). Also think he completely misses the essence of Kirkwood. All in all, not impressed.

View from my office window in Austria, the top of this hill is Gerlizen, as you can see the southern half of the alps have not gotten so much snow so the skiing is (relatively) pretty poor here. I decided not to waste my only available day here this trip and hit "Molltaler" on the way back to Germany. For the vert-freaks, this place is a little under 2000m vert, but the top 600m or so are glaicial so fairly mild pitch. Snow was amazing though, visibility a little (very) limited. I really have to organise a trip where I have more than 1 day to look around the austrian alps, there are some amazing places here and for anyone who's never been I would highly recommend a trip. Access is really easy even if you want the easy/cheap route of flying into Munich it's a 2 hour drive into the mountains of Austria.

Yeah, Gerlizen is just over the hill from my office, a bit touristy but pretty decent, lots of other places in a short drive with bigger/better terrain. Snow has been better further north so far this year.

looks promising for later this month, I have friends coming out early march and I hope they see some snow this time, last year they came in january and we had a 3 week drought, it dumped again 2 days after they left.

Based in Villach, quite close to the italian border, I have a design center there that needs quite a bit of attention recently, not decided where I will ride this week, have to see how much time I get.

Good choice, looks like el nino is back for the coming winter. Just don't come in December and expect guaranteed snow, the first big storms are usually only rolling in around Christmas.

cant comment on that other than it looked nice from mineral basin.

would love to, but Utah and Whistler are on my list after my next trip to Austria this week.

Just a quick update from the west coast, with one big storm things got a lot better, during the storm itself a couple of weeks ago we got some powder days but on very limited terrain. 2 weeks later, a lot of new terrain is open but with only a couple of light snow events in between it's basically just nice groomers and chunky frozen crap everywhere else. here's a pic from the weekend at Squalpine, hard to complain about 2 days of glorious sunshine, "dusty" loose snow over hardpack and perfect groomers in the mornings, for an east coaster this was fun time. This is my 11 year old enjoying his new gotama's

you'll be fine. my first trip I went by myself and met some friends out there after a couple of days and had a great time. Just make sure you include Brighton, Solitude, Snowbird, Snowbasin and Powder in your trip plans and you'll do fine.

Its just a message board, pretty sure no one on here holds any real bad feelings. Just a way to pass some time. This little message board community would not be the same without GSS, Toast, Shadows or many others, I hope they all stick around and keep posting.

So am I I just have a hard time understanding what drives someone to need to do that.

Then you would love Snowbird and Squaw too. Whistler doesn't count 'cos it's in Canada, the others, are they much over 2k? Northstar isn't even worth mentioning in the scope of this thread, only dumb ritz-carlton tourists ride there after the first few days of the season and it's easily the most a-typical of the tahoe resorts. scratch the question over Aspen, they are all 3k+.

apart from the revered J-Hole, how many others are significantly more? 2k is plenty if it's not run-out.

Utah was the first place I rode "out west" and I went back for 4 consecutive spring trips (twice each spring in the later years), it truly is an amazing place and as stated earlier, Pmow is something special which few people have anything bad to say about. I am really surprised to hear anyone say they prefer Alta over the 'Bird. As a boarder I obviously have no way to judge Alta, but it's hard to see how it could exceed snowbird. (Also, skier only resorts are retarded and can suck my wiener). Since moving to CA, I can look at things without any "first time" love involved and I would still say that depending on conditions, Squaw is in the same bracket as snowbird and for me, Alpine Meadows has some of the charm of both Brighton and P-Mow, now that the resorts are joined I think this becomes one of the biggest and best options in the lower 48. All that said, change is always good, despite being 3-4 hours from Squalpine, I will be arranging a trip back to Utah this spring. The fact that it's taken me three years to do this though says alot about the quality of the CA resorts, and of course about the amzing snow years we have had the last 2 seasons.
