"not enabled in HTML 5" ...... lame
-
Get well soon, that sounds like the worst kind of torture.

Quote from some guy called "philpug" over on epicski in a thread about the horrible conditions and lack of natural snow in Tahoe "Have you ever skied at Blue Mountain in PA? If so, you would not say man made snow is the same wherever you go." It's not new, but it made me laugh. maybe GSS could give us a critique of east coast vs west coast man made snow..... We reeeaaallly need snow.

Total Shit, where are the PNW and Tahoe resorts or Mammoth, most of the resorts here average waaayyy more than tossy ass-bandit resorts like deer valley and last year several of them were way over 800". I'm suprised smugglers notch didn't make their list.......
-
Good luck with that, I am assuming that your visit to Tahoe is the reason we have no freakin' snow. As soon as you leave it will start dumping.
-
you would think that, but I'm looking at lodging options for a couple of days during christmas and everything (decent) in Tahoe is booked solid.
-
We are dying for snow out here, nothing in the forecast for the next 2 weeks and no-where has any decent amount of terrain open. Horrible start to the season so far. Beautiful down here in the bay but I would rather it was pouring with rain. The webcams at squaw show it all, it's soooo depressing.
-
As time seems to be more of a limitation than money for this trip, why not wait until January and see where the seasons are shaping up best before making the decision, IMO anywhere (even the canyons) with fresh snow would be preferable to a superior mountain with 20 day old snow.
-
You can one stop from ABE to Sacramento, if you are staying on the truckee side this would be almost as close and less chance of weather delays. But no-one should care about this, Jackson is the place to be and the snow here sucks.
-
I'll let you know how the cement is on Thursday........ inferior is by definition relative, and relative to the other options, it's inferior.

You should add Utah to your list, Snowbird on a good day will equal just about anything on your list so far and there is something quite unique about Powder despite its lack of really steep terrain. I think it's funny how no-one even considers Tahoe, and most have no experience of it. I used to be something like that, but at least it keeps the tourist crowds down a bit. If you had already done Utah, I might even have given my vote to your Tahoe list, we seem to be shaping up for another big snow year. You're entitled to your opinion........

Yes, we celebrate having a day (or 2) off work to go skiing. I like turkey but I prefer snowboarding. The years we spent in PA we would do the whole traditional feast with the exception of candied yams (surely only an american could have come up with that), but in the end it just seems like such a waste of a day getting fat and drunk. This from last year at thanksgiving..... at 10 years old how would you rather spend your day
-
So Squaw Valley will open on Wednesday and to celebrate this uniquely american holiday, me and the kids will be hitting Squaw and probably another as yet undefined resort on Thursday / Friday. Storms are all lined up for fresh snow on thursday, 6 days and counting......... wooooo hoooooo

If the roads are sketchy because it's still snowing, stay at Northstar, head over to the back of the summit and ride in the trees, better visibility, better conditions, more sheltered. Northstar actually has some of the best tree runs in Tahoe and Squaw can be a complete waste of time during a storm, the weather comes over the ridge so fast and it most often a complete white-out on any terrain worth skiing.

Looking at the report, it seems difficult to believe that someone of his experience would walk away from triggering a huge avy (without noticing it? is that even possible) and then take on a slope like that. Given how he died, I have to wonder if the fact that he never seemed to wear a helmet, even on the 250ft cliff drop is significant.

I'll be there in 2-3
-
The storm cycles have begun, it's been quite a cold/wet start down in the bay so this bodes well for the mountains. Looks like everywhere will be open for thanksgiving.
-
it seems strange that someone that's been living as he did for the last years would be out there without the right gear or training. Sad to see another one gone though, seems to have been quite regular recently.

I know how this will turn out but whatever....

As someone that lives close to and really enjoys the Tahoe area, I would still say if you haven't done Utah yet then you should definitely choose that over the other two, but as others have said, you just need to be more creative on the domestic side and allow yourself 2 trips. If you liked Squaw (and who doesn't) then you will be very happy at Snowbird, for me the attraction of PC and The Canyons is really limited, but Powder and Snowbasin were both great. It's been 2 seasons since I've been to Utah (since I moved out here) but I could see a trip this year happening. I've never been to JH, it sounds great but it's never seemed great enough for a 1 resort vacation. I prefer to be somewhere I can ski a different resort each day. That said, I think I will be at Mammoth for a few days pretty soon. -
it's on the top 5 worst grooming list, right at the top......
-
Both lists are obviously supposed to reflect the needs of the magazines target audience, how nice are the restaurants, bathrooms and valets factoring as much as the terrain and conditions. If you fit the demographic you would probably agree with the list, if all you care about is skiing/riding, it makes no sense. Pointless exercise in my humble opinion.
-
list is BS, how can you have Heavenly on the list and not Squaw? Also hope it's not in descending order, Queer Valley 20 places over Snowbird, yeah right.....
