in case anyone was wondering this was sent to Joel at coloradopowderforecast in response to a question he asked about FS permitting and A-Basin:
-
They do have longer term permits. The past few years, the closing dates have been announced at the beginning of the season for both ski areas. They don't have a permit until mid april, then apply for an extension. If you are asking why they don't close later....Loveland doesn't have the business (i bet the operate at a loss the last couple of weeks), and at A-Bay..the terrain that they can safely open is severely limited by early June (they are scared to death of wet slides, and are very conservative in this regard) also, notice how I said "mostly" made up. I bet the whitefish thing is the real deal especially if it has anything to do with public safety, but I honestly doubt the FS lets elk dictate ski area permitting extensions. besides...elk aren't even phased by people...ever been to estes?
-
they are losing money at this point most likely. Even mount snow is closing this weekend. Peak is committed to early season skiing because it gives them free press and makes them money, late season skiing is not profitable.
-
The NFS lease thing is mostly made up some resorts use it as an excuse to take the blame off of them for closing early, but mostly its just a rumor made up by people who don't know anything about how ski areas operate. Resorts in the west close for the same reason resorts in the east close: people just aren't interested in skiing later in the spring. Ski resorts must either operate at a loss for the die-hards or just close. For example: I have heard in the past that vail needs to close by the 2nd week in April every year because of elk breeding. It is interesting to me how the elk are willing to wait an extra 2 weeks this year to start breeding (Vail closes on Easter Sunday this year...April 24th). Obviously, the reason for the late closing has nothing to do with Vail trying to cash in on another holiday weekend right? I guess the elk are just giving up sex for lent or something. from the JH facebook:

little bit. Hoping to really get into it this summer. I have a good friend who is a guide on clear creek, and she said we can go pretty much whenever I want.
-
let me get this straight..Jive turkey says colorado now sucks because of something regarding gaper day? you are a weirdo man. Summit country is not whack, its just the people who think like you that are whack. Out here there is still 2 months left in lift served (1 month at Loveland). I am probably going to be skiing less and less in bounds as spring goes on (its almost peak bagging season), but my ski season is far from over. I'll be skiing regularly (~2 times a week) until june, then maybe a little less after that as mtn biking and rafting takes over. There is so much snow right now that plenty of terrain will probably stay pretty good until at least mid to late june.

Nestor's retiring, store to become 6th Buckman's location

I have never heard anyone say christy's is good. Colorado Ski and Golf/Boulder Ski Deals is pretty awesome though -
that was more of a jab at johnny. I was trying to defend keystone there (and you). I'll check out your shack if I am there before they close. And, I do ski breck once in a while...there is some good terrain at breck..keystone not so much. Jordan
-
honestly, keystone is rad if you ski park (it has one of the best parks in the country for sure). I don't, so i have no reason to ski there
-
its a controlled slide using an ice axe to slow your fall.

thanks for the beta. Hopefully ill get out into some of those zones this spring. I have heard that there is another free FS cabin in one of those drainages (in addition to the peter rabbit one in current creek). Do you know anything about that? I have never smoked at a DMB show. I can still count on 2 hands the number of times I've smoked in my life. It is fun once in a blue moon, but it's certainly not an integral part of my life.
-
If I am ever at keystone, I will look for it, but usually I just cannot justify a reason for ever skiing keystone, sorry 90's was really good, fingers were a little scoured, but really fun (they are just really fun lines). Floral park was some of the worst snow I've skied in a long time. 1/8" suncrust on top of soft snow=very sucky skiing. I haven't really done too much exploring on berthoud outside of the main zones. I would really like to get up on some of the bigger lines in current creek though this spring. and ya, that slide on mines was HUGE
-
took 3 runs yesterday. One on thew 90's, one on the fingers, and one on floral park why?

go hike the highlands bowl. That is a longer hike than anything you will find at telluride. I agree with your sentiment that whoever is deleting posts really needs to stop. There is no place on an open forum for some butt-hurt mod to go around deleting everything he doesn't agree with. I realize this is a private board, and they can do what they want, but if this keeps going on, I sure as hell will stop posting here. PASR already doesn't have a lot of activity, and alienating some of your most active members won't help you build a more active community.

How can you justify hating on a place you have never been to. People like to hate on it because aspen is so well known, and everyone has a preconceived notion of what it is like. I can attest to the fact, that once you get there, you will realize that aspen extreme is just a movie. Sure aspen can be expensive, but UNLIKE TELLURIDE, it can be done on the cheap as well, especially for people who live in Colorado. Stay in Glenwood or Carbondale for like $60 a night. Buy a classic pass and ski for less than $50 a day.
-
By the way, bringing silverton into this argument is beyond stupid. Comparing silverton to any other ski area is like comparing a hamburger to a tree. Totally different animals.
-
your loss.. aspen is rad!...well snowmass and highlands are at least...I have never skied Ajax. They may not have the pucker factor of some of the things are silverton or telluride..but the terrain is a shit ton better than anything in bounds on the front range.

I don't really think your post even warrants a response, but I'll respond anyway. You admit that it requires a certain magnitude of deceleration of your head to cause various head injuries, including concussions, correct? (you seem to admit this) That amount of deceleration is somewhere on the order of 300 G's according to the various organizations responsible for testing helmets. You also admit that helmets work to dissipate energy and reduce the deceleration of your head during an impact. However, you can't seem to connect these two facts that you will readily admit are true to the only logical conclusion. I think you should take a step back from the "simple physics" as you put it; that you clearly don't seem to understand, and invest your time in a deductive reasoning class instead. Your class may also help you understand your flawed logic paraphrased below: "My friend who is a nurse tells that people have gotten concussions while wearing helmets; therefore helmets are essentially useless in preventing concussions" Have fun trying to steal my identity with an unofficial transcript from my school with no sensitive information on it. Let me know how that works out for you! -

I think it is important to clear up misinformation on the helmet issue. People could take this guy's advice and lives can be affected. That would be more of a dis-service to Brian's memory than anything else. Jordan -

you did a google search and picked out 2 articles against helmet usage when there are hundreds that disagree with your statements. get real, you are an idiot. the purpose of a helmet is to transfer energy from a collision to padding and the shell where it is dissipated, kind of like a bumper in a car is designed to crush to dissipate energy from a crash. Its not rocket science to understand that less of that energy going directly into your skull will reduce head injuries, including concussions. Do a test for me....slam your head into a brick wall, then push your head into the wall at a much slower rate of speed...see which one causes the concussion. Helmets are designed to slow down the impact and transfer some of the kinetic energy into friction. Obviously they cannot protect you from every possible head injury but most studies on them agree that they substantially reduce injury rates. o0o0o0 look i can search google too http://www.telemarktips.com/Helmets.html In part: -

sorry but this is ridiculous. As someone who has been protected from concussions more than once from wearing a helmet...PLEASE DISREGARD THIS PERSON'S POST! -
I was agreeing with you until here. I don't think aspen is worth $100 a day, but the aspen mountains are lightyears better than copper, Beav, Breck and Arapahoe. Ill agree with you on telluride. In fact, I love that place so much it may be the only place I wouldn't mind paying $100 for a lift ticket. also, i would appreciate whoever is doing it to STOP DELETING MY POSTS! thanks

$190 more than my season pass for loveland, 3 days at monarch, 3 days at purg, and a silverton day

No, this is in superbowl, way lookers left of the lift. The one you are referring to is called patrol rock (in Patrol Bowl), but it is long gone this time of year.
