I really like this shot for some reason...sorry for posting yet another pic of the same rock at loveland me jumping off of Crack Rock 3/26/11:

That is a myth...FS lease extensions are very easy for ski areas to get. It is all economics

Pocono Record article about death of ski patroller Brian Lock
jordan replied to C1erArt's topic in Blue Mountain
That's awful...RIP -
naa, its the same story everywhere. Ski areas out here are already seeing huge declines in skier visits. Most ski areas out here close early to mid April, and close with their biggest base of the season. They have the snow to stay open through June or later. The upside is that there are enough hard core skiers to support a couple of smaller ski hills to stay open a little bit later. I always found it insane the amount of effort ski areas put into opening an icy groomer as early as possible, but then close with the deepest base of the season. I guess their hands are forced by the public.
-
i am sure they are not closing due to a lack of snow

jack frost really has had quite a limited season since Peak took over. kinda lame really. before peak took over JF would generally stay open on weekends till the last weekend in march, I even remember some seasons where it went to the first weekend in April. Come on Peak..everyone knows JF>>>>>BB, whats the deal?

When I am referred to as a "misinformed youth" who "ski's loveland and the vail bowls", I feel like I have a right to respond, especially since I have skied the run which has been used as an example to make me look like I don't know what I'm talking about.
-
I have been to Snowmass quite a few times and have skied gowdys many times (as well as AMF and whatever that other chute near there is). It certainly does not require hop turns (not that you can't do them if you want to). I never said nothing in colorado requires hop turns, but I have skied quite a few places in colorado (all the main ski areas at least) and the only two places where I have ever found myself in a tight spot that I needed hop turns to safely ski out have been at Crested Butte and Silverton. I am just speaking from my experiences.
-
I agree, but still stand by the fact that very few resorts have anything tight and steep enough to justify hop turns. The terrain exists, but its usually not in bounds at ski resorts. side-note, but have you ever poached the yellowstone club? if so..how easy is it to do. I have heard amazing things about that place.
-
i'm sorry, that was a bit harsh of me.. Billygoat lines sure are fun, but to say that anything less than that is lame is ridiculous. I have skied at quite a few places, but can think of only two resorts that even have the kind of terrain you are talking about; CB and Silverton. This is not to say that other places don't have steep, fun as hell terrain, just nothing that requires a reasonably good skier to do hop turns. It is quite easy to link up turns on 50+ degree pitches with no hop turns. That pitch sure gets my blood pumping though.

silverton does this 11 people with full gear in a pickup bed earlier this season btw: great photos. Utah is looking great right now. Wish I could be there for sure. Although...another week of this crazy warm weather we have been having in colorado, and it'll be time for steep BC lines in no time. (maybe by my spring break (hopefully))

stop feeding the troll and he'll go away

haha, her nickname is actually "purple pants".

loveland today: I hit 50 days today! WOOT!

this.. I grew up in the JF race program, and i give it complete credit for making me the skier I am today. it is a wonderful program (provided it hasn't changed much)

yeah, it's me

vail pass..saturday

I regularly hike for worse snow than that, but I enjoy the hiking part, and getting the workout. Sure, i would RATHER ski untracked in the BC, but you simply can't ski terrain like that in the BC mid winter unless you are an idiot (at least not in Colorado)
-
I have a friend who two years ago at loveland went up to Seth Morrison and said, "hey Seth, i can't believe you are a pro, dude, I'm totally better than you" He was not amused there has also been plenty of pole whacking on cornices at loveland going on since the movie came up online for free a couple of weeks ago. BTW, i just want you all to know....I'M THE BEST SKIER ON PASR!!
-
can you find me? Loveland sidecountry... this is called idiot's cornice, due to the fact that idiots tend to trigger slides here often. Avy conditions were relatively safe today though.
-
yeah, baker is a pretty risky place to take a trip. It rains there in the winter almost as much as it snows. If you hit it right though, you could be skiing some of the deepest snow on earth.

if you have a VR pass, epic mix keeps track of vertical, runs, what lifts you ride, etc using the RF chip inside the pass and receivers all over the mountain
