looks like BB will be open next week..regular hours
-
http://www.rockmaple.com/pages/member.html looks like you need to join rock maple and pay the race registration fee, as well as have your own sled
-
seems like they plan on using that side of the mountain for the snowmobile race, so unless you want to get run over by a snowmobile, i wouldnt reccomend that...
-
Im guessing they will only have 1 or 2 ski patrollers on, so they have to limit terrain
-
no, they could have edelweiss open too, just not the very top unless you want to hike a few feet
-
add shawnee "at least march 25th" to the list

why did blue have to close earlier this year? JFBB had the foresight to blow enough snow, why didn't blue? Blue must just not care about their customers. Why did JFBB close the other day due to the rain? Camelback and Shawnee were open. JFBB must just not care about their customers. Why did shawnee not get fully open till the middle of february? JFBB, CB and Blue all care about their customers enough to get everything open, why didnt shawnee? Sno mountain didnt open at all till late january... they must not care about their customers Every ski area has faults and they all have to close sometimes for different circumstances. comparing different ski areas is like comparing apples and oranges. Also, as much as you hate CB, they generally stay open until there is not enough snow for them to stay open any longer, unlike most other ski areas in NEPA. They get a more direct hit from the sun at CB than most other places because they face west, not north. Their snow melts faster making it harder for them to get open and stay open.
-
it happens, and it does compute. I do think CB jumped the gun though I think the only excuses should be if the roads are impassable (ambulances couldnt get through if someone got hurt) or if the snow piles up so fast you couldnt keep enough clearance under the lifts. Ski lifts are engineered with snow in mind (much more snow than an 18" noreaster will bring) so there is no reason to close lifts in fear of a mechanical failure due to snow. I do wish jeff and doug would stop comparing CB to blue though. Blue is farther south, is warmer, and generally gets much less snow than CB. the "blue was open and so should you" argument is getting old and holds very little weight. I remember JFBB closed early during the christmas 2002 storm because Penn DOT closed route 940. We had to chill in the lodge till they reopened the road at like 6:00 pm (they closed the lifts at like 1:00 or 2:00)

that would give you a $15 lift ticket at JFBB no?

too lazy to type elevator

by your reasoning, elementary ed teachers should not have to be certified either right? I mean, teaching times tables isnt open heart surgery or anything. I never said you cant learn anything from people who lack training in how to teach, but I know for a fact that I would not be the skier I am today if it wasnt for PSIA certified instructors. It is like night and day. I can observe a lesson for 5 minutes and know without a doubt if the instructor has had any training. Kid instructors with no training are totally fine for getting you started, but if you want to get good, you need to have someone teaching you that knows what they are doing. Jordan

did you hit it? what about vader?

no, I can see peak resorts maybe taking a loss for the last week or two for bragging rights which may get them to stay open until early to mid april, but theres no way they will stay open for an extra month and a half after they start losing money.
-
Im sure they do, but they dont tell them how fast they are allowed to run them. Most fixed grip chair lifts are capable of running at 500-600 feet per minute, but ski area operators generally dont run them at top speed. For one, it is harder work for chair attendants, and their insurance probably dictates how fast they can run them anyway...
-
, they state doesent have legislation on how fast lifts can go. Sno's insurance might regulate that though
-
its great free publicity for the mountain, so if they have enough snow, I can't imagine them not doing it. I wouldnt imagine there would be an announcement till at least mid to late april though, because they need to be sure they will still have the snow before then announce it. Jordan

not to be disrespectful to the FS team instructors, because some of them are friends of mine, but they are all just kids running the program with no real FS training or even PSIA certifications. The crazy thing is, when PEAK took over, they stopped offering incentives for instructors to become certified. That is all fine and dandy for the snow monsters program, but if they want to have a decent reputation on freestyle training, they are going to need to shell out some more money for some real instructors. Pretty much any random kid that has been skiing park for a year or two could teach your kid the same things he or she will learn in the freestyle program. Jordan

I paid $279 for an unlimited season pass that is good at breckenridge, keystone, and Arapahoe Basin, as well as 10 days at vail and beaver creek I bought another season pass for eldora for $119 those are good deals, $500 for JFBB is NOT a good deal. Jordan

elk season passes are also like $800

Ive never been, but I hear that white lightning at montage is usually good to go until late april too... BTW, when is CB closing, next weekend? They need to start getting ready for camelbeach right?
-
BB could make it to April 15th easily. They still had a few trails skiable till around that time last year.. The question is: is it worth their while? and the answer is: probably not... I actually hiked Big Boulder trail towards the end of april last year, and most of it was still skiable, I had to take off my skis once or twice and walk 20 feet or so, but for the most part, it was fine..

good to see they are keeping that around.
