High alpine biking on the CDNST

They are pretty common in the alpine. they are solid white in the winter and like to hang out in little burrows in the snow above treeline. They are a common sight at Loveland since much of their terrain is above treeline. They don't reveal themselves until you just about ski right over them.

You skied 13,010, Marmot, and Wild Child all in the same day? Impressive!! Loveland is a LOT bigger than most people give it credit for. The ridge is HUGE.

Skiing or Riding - what is more popular among kids/teens now?
jordan replied to Ski2Live Live2Ski's topic in General Chat
Skiing is way, way, way (way) more popular in Colorado, especially among kids. Most of the snowboarders left are mid-20 something or older that are left over from the huge migration to snowboarding in the 90s. The advantages that originally drew a large crowd to snowboarding have been all but been eliminated with modern skis, and the advantages of skiing are plenty. Skiing is simply more fun, and is a much more efficient method of travelling over snow. -
Actually, it found that many more people fall off of lifts with bars than without (about 3:1) NOTE: I understand that this data is skewed because it doesn't take into account that there are many more lifts with bars than without However, I found it interesting that you are approximately 2.5 x more likely to die in an elevator (per mile traveled) and 7 x more likely to die in a car crash (per mile traveled) than on a ski lift. https://www.nsaa.org/media/68048/NSAA-Ski-Lift-Safety-Fact-Sheet-10-1-2012.pdf

I'd bet that the bar actually helps with full size adults (although adults should know better/sit properly). However, I think that the data is skewed because kids are more likely to fall off the lift with the bar down than up due to a false sense of security, issues with sliding under the bar, and issues with putting the bar down/lifting it up. I have been told by the people in the know at Loveland Ski Area that this is why they don't have any bars on their lifts (even the new lifts don't have bars at Loveland) As such, most ski ares really just have bars on the lifts to help with public perception and marketing (and in the case of VT, its the law). I would bet that since the owners of Loveland have no interest in turning a profit (seriously! read the new 75 year anniversary book) and are able to maintain enough business to break even with things just the way they are...they couldn't care less about improving public perception to attract more tourists.

i guess waiting in a lift line for an hour to ski a 400-vert run can loosely be considered skiing. You could literally walk up and ski down the run by the time you would get through that lift line.

Nope, A Basin is not really worth it this time of year. There is too much good, stable skiing to be had.

Ehh, they are as expensive as you make them. I can drive to Utah for example and stay in Sandy for $60 a night and ski for ~$60 a day. Jackson, for example, has extraordinary cheap lodging available and cheap lift tickets with the mountain collective pass, as does Aspen (inc cheap lodging in Glenwood), Whistler, etc. If you do it right, and don't need slopeside accommodations, you don't have to spend a ton of money on a ski vacation. There are plenty of really good deals out there. I spent less $$ to Heli-Ski in AK for a week last April than most people pay to vacation in Aspen/Telluride/Jackson for a week because I didn't need glitz to go along with my skiing. You pay a premium for glitz, not for the skiing itself. -

If you ski a lot, its really cheap on a per-day basis. If you do it once or twice a year, it is really expensive. The initial investment is a lot higher than many other sports, and that is keeping new potential skiers away from the sport. -

Loveland is doing great. The parking lots are filled almost every weekend (although the lift lines are almost non-existent...the parking is the bottleneck that keeps the crowds down) I think they benefit from the fact that their lift tickets run $61 in a land where $100+ is the norm. -
I wax my skis MAYBE once a year

all you need is: a slope steep enough to slide √ cohesive snow on top of a smooth bed surface or weak layer √ Physics don't work differently in PA than in places with bigger mountains, and the elevator is about the perfect slope angle to slide.

lol rambo. its not even close to even being the best run even at CB.
