Nice day, a bit icy in spots, though it got a bit better with late day snow putting a fresh dusting on top. Everything was open but trees had too thin cover to be worth skiing. Run of the day was Floyds. Got a free "clinic" as part of Subaru winterfest, but bailed part way through to go back to East side. No lines on the expert lifts at all so it was a good call for the holiday weekend.

In this case there were a lot of out of control fools on the green open at Shawnee last weekend, especially boarders, while the blues had folks who knew how to do things like turn and stop.

Had to explain to the kids last weekend that the green trails are actually the most dangerous on the mountain due to the large number of out of control fools on them.

They don't actually fine for fast skiing do they?

Don't know if it was called Raceway for a while, but it was called Widow Maker all the way back in Little Gap days. Going to ski Sunday and might do Blue, though without VIP access I am a bit reluctant to brave the holiday weekend crowds there.

Props on the new web site and on being the only place in the Poconos 100% open for the holiday weekend. One thing I have never got about the JF trail map is it looks like there are 4 trails down the lower part of East Mt. and I only ever see 2. What's the deal with that?

That is the BC I referred to in "other than BC and CB".

There is an Inn at Shawnee but it is a few miles away. Don't know if there is any affiliation.

Are BC and CB currently the only places in Eastern PA with on site lodging options?

Blue indicated on FB they were giving vouchers to folks who requested them at guest services. Good thing to know for the future.

I am asking the question, not assuming what the answer is

If a place does not offer a raincheck when they make a decision to close, I will establish a practice of choosing other mountains when there is any chance of rain and will think twice before choosing that mt. again. They are one of at least 10 worthy day trip mountains for me (along with Elk Montage JF CB Shawnee, 4 in CSkills, and maybe even Mt Creek) and are not in a position to act like a monopolist. Their choice is to become that "I am unlikely to go back as often or in such circumstances" place for a lot of people or to guarantee that all those people will give them another shot and probably spend some more $ there when they do. Incredibly short sighted to not offer a rainchecks in such a situation IMO. Costs them nothing, earns them good will and perhaps some $.

Not saying they shouldn't close down during a thunder storm, but deciding to close for the rest of a whole (in this case relatively mild) day is a different matter than turning lifts off for an hour. To me no refund due to weather means don't ask for a refund if you are too much of a wuss to ski in the weather, which is a different thing than no refund if we close due to weather.

So when they close mid day do they offer rainchecks or punish those who tried by keeping their cash and saying tough luck?
