Glade Reports? Subaru Winterfest?
Ski2Live Live2Ski replied to Ski2Live Live2Ski's topic in Jack Frost & Big Boulder
Thanks for the info. May head up Saturday. -
Was surprised to learn from both my 14 year old nephew (who skis) and my 11 year old niece (who rides) that skiing is more popular than riding among their friends. They said they thought this was because there are lots of rich people in Darien CT (where they live) who start out doing what their parents do, which was usually ski. Any stats on whether the trend towards riding is reversing, or any other anecdotal evidence on this front?

Thinking about skiing JF this weekend. What is the coverage like in the glades now? And who can tell me what Subaru Winterfest is. Not many details on their page. Is this something only for Subaru owners? Will it make crowds worse than otherwise for a holiday weekend?
-
Thanks. I will either do Frost or Hunter (where West side rarely has crowds). Got enough prepaid tix between the various things I have bought that I risk leaving some unused if I don't start using them.
-
Yeah, Montage is where I generally go to avoid holiday weekend crowds. But I've got these PA Ski and Ride cards I've paid for that get me in to those three places at no cost, so I'm gonna ski them til I have used my free tix up. Also have a prepaid ticket to Hunter, but I can't see that being any better. My hunch is that JFrost might be the best if I stick to the East Mountain lifts which only service the "expert" terrain
-
What do you think the lines will be like at Blue, Camelback and JFrost? And will Sat or Sun crowds be worse?
-
What is bumblebee bowl? My fav things about Blue: - Closest place with 1000' vertical - Served by high speed lifts - Reasonably steep terrain, some of which is allowed to bump up. - Nice that they opened a bit of Glades, limited though they are - Sentimental appeal as I've been skiing there since Little Gap days.

They sure arent coming there for the glades -
I skied there a good bit when I lived 45 minutes away from it in North Jersey as anywhere else with comparable vertical was at least twice as far, but have not been back since. Even with their $89-99 triple ticket deals I have seen, it's not worth it. If you like skiing/riding park they have a whole peak devoted to that, with no Cabriloet, so it's great for that sort of thing. But that's something I only do occasionally.
-
And the only trail there as challenging as quite a few runs at Blue is the one double black Pipeline, which only has an 850' vertical and is on the middle peak Granite Peak, which is the one that is open least often (since you can only enter the resort via the two other peaks). It was almost always groomed when I last frequented the place, but it is quite steep. At least if you are skiing Pipeline you avoid the Cabriolet. But skiing the same run over and over gets a bit old.

They make you take your skis off and on like it's a gondola, but it's open to the out doors so you stay cold, you have to stand the whole way so your legs don't get a rest, and they cram a lot of people onto the thing. It's like somebody thought of taking the worst part of every way of getting up the mountain and bolting them together into this thing. I honestly might prefer a surface lift to this contraption
-
Think you'd have to offer me a free ticket to get me back there. Don't love skiing park, hate the cabriolet (worst lift ever), there's like one steep trail I like on the middle peak.

I think that is clearly the correct way to mark trails. If you list a trail that feeds only into black terrain as blue or green, you are going to wind up with people on black terrain who can't handle it, which creates a hazard for themselves and others and leads to them snowplowing down and scraping off all the loose snow. IMO the purpose of trail markings is really to guide people who are less familiar with the mountain and can't handle more challenging terrain. -
They have no issue with folks skiing the trees to my knowledge. Writing "glades" on their trail map seals the deal. But Jack Frost is the place in NEPA with the most glades to ski, coverage permitting, and a clearly permissive policy. Only time I go to Frost is when there will be coverage in the trees.
-
The designated glades on the map are very gentle and are a great way to get your feet wet for that kind of skiing. A lot of fun when there is enough snow coverage. There are some more technical glades on the North Face that are not on the map.

Yep 2:55 to get there, terrible 5:20 drive to get home. Only lift with a line was the main quad, and even that had a 3 minute singles line at its worst time. It was the best day of the 6 I have skied this season on all criteria other than drive home.

Windham was super this morning. Especially enjoyed the soft snow cover on Why Not? Wolverine and Wheel Chair. Cool to check out the new Wolf's Prey trail which is nicely cut and has a mice secluded feel to it. . Unfortunately even leaving the lot at 1:30 was not early enough to beat the bad driving weather, which slowed the NYS to a crawl, and made my return trip take 2.5 hours longer than my AM trip.

Had a great day at camelback today. Nice conditions with a lot of open terrain. Anytime lines got bad they were easily avoided on the doubles. Was worried about bad crowds forming by afternoon but it was fine all day. Only disappointment was that nothing was left ungroomed.
-
Real nice time skiing Cannonball and Boomer today, though it was disappointing in light of the soft bumps on Boomer touted by their website, that they felt the need to close Boomer early this AM to groom it flat. Having the choice between a bump run or groomed run, or even leaving Boomer half bummed ala Barneys would have made for a much more varied experience.
-
Thinking about doing am there tmrw. $15 tkt if I use psaa coupon. Are Boomer and Cannonball groomed?
-
Cool. Probably heading there in the next 3 days.
-
While hampered by short vertical and slow lifts, the Northface at Montage is more challenging than anything at Blue, particularly as much of it is often left ungroomed. And the slow lift is made up for by the absence of lift lines even on holiday weekends (not to mention the $28 4 hour weekend morning ticket, that you can usually stretch to 5 hrs)

First day on rollerblades ~21 years ago I was going too fast and couldn't really brake adequately and followed my skiers instinct to bail - wearing only wrist guards. OUCH! Before trying it again, I picked up some knee and elbow pads, and did not try that maneuver again. After a couple years I was done on rollerblades entirely.

So they started on Dec 15 2014, and their 10th day out Dec 13, 2014 they made 4 black diamond runs to wrap up their day at Shawnee. Never thought they would come so far their first year.
