  1. Anyone know which chairlifts here are the triples? Is there a triple to the top? I need a triple or bigger lift to ski with two young girls.
  2. Heading up to Elk Saturday. Anyone else going for closing day?
  3. Odd they would not keep open until Sunday
  4. Day 7 and lesson #6 for the kids on Saturday. They are finally bonafide skiers. 8 runs down Shawnee's 700 feet of vertical for both of them - the first time they did runs with more than 125 feet of vertical - and the last few runs were on blue terrain. Never believed we'd make it this far this season when I watched their first lesson in December. We are now able to ski a real slope as a trio without assistance. The girls are as proud of themselves as I am of them. I have no kind words for Shawnee's ski school office, but their instructor Claire (a man) was wonderful with the girls and felt they both had some real natural ability.
  5. Got to come to the lift ticket window in a full costume. Don't have to ski in it. But it's cheaper to buy a costume than to buy a lift ticket. http://www.shawneemt.com/events-activities/costumecarnivalday.html
  6. Should have said "anywhere in VT that is no further from PA" Whiteface is probably a bit closer than Killington. Nice to spend the time driving north rather than east, and to hit less traffic.
  7. Yeah, if I want more than the Catckills offer, I am more likely to hit Gore or Whiteface than go to VT. By the time you get to Whiteface there is just as much challenge and snowfall as anywhere in VT, more vertical, ample territory, smaller lines, lower prices.
  8. I was there 3/1 as well. It was nice where it was groomed. The trees were skiable but slick/crunchy surface. THe bumps were scraped too hard to be fun for me. River Shot has to be the most beautiful view from a PA ski trail, and might be better than any you get in the Catskills either.
  9. Every time we go out they remind me of my statement that they will be better than me because they are starting younger We will make it out at least one more time this season as I already purchased a package at Shawnee that I haven't used. Weather permitting we'll do that March 8. Then I'll have to see how much longer the ski season lasts and maybe try for the 22nd or 23rd. Kids are only with me every other week.
  10. Took the kids out for day 5 yesterday - first time with no lesson. One of them is now skiing independently, with my assistance limited to telling her to turn and occasionally helping her back to her feet. Exciting to see this progress.
  11. Sure there are good reasons for them to do it. But given that they so rarely run it, I doubt it is a priority.
  12. Can't imagine they would even feel a need to replace long haul if it broke, since it has been operating no more than 20% of the times I have been there. I'd like to see a high speed replace Phoebe Snow
  13. Lesson #4 last sunday and one of my girls sailed down about 100' of vertical with no pauses, assists or spills. Woohoo!
  14. Had a great time out at Montage in the fresh snow on the 18th myself (I would estimate 5-6"), though the access road was so treacherous I seriously doubted I was going to make it there. Took about 40 minutes from 81 to the mountain.
  15. What, no Pocono runs?
  16. Kids had lesson #3 at Spring Mt. yesterday and rode the chair for the first time. While they don't have a detatchable lift there, they actually brought the lift to a stop for the kids to board the first time. The girls and I couldn't be happier with their instructor Carrie who is really going the extra mile for them in every conceivable way, including taking such joy in what she is doing, sharing the joy with them, and bringing them little gifts like stickers. Throw in the proximity and the "family night" deals they have on Sunday and I have to say there is no better place for kids from the Philadelohia area to learn to ski.
  17. I was visiting someone that lived in Boulder before spending a few days at Vail, and we spend one day skiing Eldora together. Also took my only powder skiing lesson there - a skill I don't get to practice as often as I would like.
  18. I've skied out west many times, but the altitudes are lower at Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, Steamboat, Vail, Eldora, and Heavenly. Expect to make it out to Mt. Hood this season.
  19. Maybe. All I know is I never felt anything like it any other time, and I've never skied at that altitude any other time. Wasn't really doing anything different in any other way.
  20. For me I had just gotten off a plane from New York the day before skiing and had stayed in Albequerque that night so I had no acclimation. About the only thing I was doing right seems to have been smoking (which I long ago quit). I skied fine for about 5 hours, but then was persuaded to do "one last run" I wasn't feeling, and got knocked out so bad I had to be brought down on a ski patrol sled and spent about the next 18 hours recovering. Learned my lesson. Would have been one of the best ski experiences I've ever had were it not for that one last run.
  21. Skies Taos once in 89. Beautiful place but the altitude there was even more breathtaking than the view - nearly knocked me out coming from sea level without much time to acclimate.
  22. I always put the bar down. It's more comfortable if there is a foot rest, it feels more secure, and it annoys snowboarder punks. That's Win Win Win, whether it enhances safety or not. Definitely agree that driving to and from the mountain is the riskiest part of skiing, particularly as it makes one more likely to drive on roads that are in unsafe conditions.
  23. Yeah it is wonderful. I wish I had been given the opportunity at their age, and I am doing my best to see that they become better skiers than I could ever be having started at 15. Can't wait til we are able to get out and do some real trails together.
  24. More props for Spring Mountain, particularly their instructor Carrie who gave the girls their second lesson yesterday, this time on their gentle Mole Hill area where they rode a Magic Carpet (first lesson they were just walking up and skiing down the school area slope). I also practiced with the girls a good bit yesterday so they were on the snow at least 3 hours. Sore legs this morning (for all of us - teaching a pair of 6 year olds to ski is more exertion than skiing - probably hoisted them back upright a good 50 times). They are making great progress and will be trying the chairlift and skiing down a real incline next time they go out with her.
  25. I was up at Montage Sat and conditions were fine, but their coverage was thin enough in places that I can't imagine them having the North Face open tomorrow
