Big Snow at American Dream in NJ. Plan to try in off skison.
-
I am planning to pay to try Big Snow with the girls one day in 2020. I'm really not trying to convince anyone to stop skiing Blue. Just reporting on my own ski trips, and commenting on other threads. Epic Local pass was an awesome deal and seems likely I will have my best ski year ever, as will my girls.

Southern PA sucks (Roundtop and Liberty 1/2)

When skiing with girls I often am starting and ending day at my parents place outside Philly. That was the case when I went there. Would be far less likely to RT there from my place in Lawrenceville NJ -
Of course. If I lived those distances from those places, I would ski Blue a lot more. Thats why I moatly skied Little Gap while based in Philly (through Spring 88). Did it plenty again last season when I got a great deal on it, and enjoyed it.

I was asked to elaborate on my comment about by ski history which basically started at Spring, moved to Blue, and then on to larger places.

Also started exploring them as I got a Peak Pass (then switched to Epic). Had a great day at Whitetail end of season last year - the one time I have been there. It was 100% open and their 2nd peak was covered in soft natural bumps. I would go back. Did Roundtop (1 trail open) to start the season in November as a warm up as it was a lot better than what BB was offering. If they get 100% open I could see trying it for variety from Frost on a day I did not want to drive as far as Whitetail or Hunter. -
With just the right fresh snow and a mountain that leaves it ungroomed it can be pretty awesome on occasion. North face of Montage is probably the place I have experienced that most regularly in PA. And it always beats not skiing and is great for learning or teaching kids. But when I hit Taos in Dec 88 it was incomparably better than any of the PA skiing I had been limited to from 80-87 (Little Gap, Doe, Spring, Jack Frost, Big Boulder, Elk, Alpine, Split Rock). In general, if I have the time and $ available to travel a bit further, I will take any of the 4 Catskills Mts over any in PA, except if a snowstorm just hit Poconos and missed Catskills. Does anyone here feel they prefer PA to Catskills skiing other than for proximity reasons?

Never met a girl in CO who I dated. Song is fictional.

I gotta agree with the commenta about the shortcomings of all season tires after my recent trip to VT. Some real tricky driving on slick Mt roads had me wishing for better tires. Also, we changed plans from Attitash/Wildcat to Okemo/MtSnow based on more snow fall and % open in S.Vt.

It is great to have that option within 2 hours for sure. Beats NJ skiing or skiing anywhere on the east cost south of PA other than Snowshoe.

Free with Epic Local pass, and switching to that got me a rebate of part of what I had paid for our Peak Passes.

We were at Mt Snow the day that crowd pic was shot 12/31 - and it easily took the title from Blue of worst lift line I have ever been in. We made it though in an hour. Others waited 90 min I heard. But only waited in it once. After that we made the long traverse to north face and stuck to 2 upper mountain lifts with waits from 0 to 10 min, so not too bad. We got 14 runs in and there was about 4" of fresh real soft snow which could be found most of day due to the few people getting up to the top from the base due to the limited lifts and long traverse to North Face. Kids were awesome handling all the open blacks with soft bumps forming on North Face New Years Day we went to Okemo, where lines were small and almost all lifts were running, but conditions were more standard groomed with fluffiness only at sites of trails and bumps only where seeded. Okemo did a much better job dealing with icing of detatchable lifts, reportedly by moving all chairs into indoor storage overnight. Both days easily beat skiing PA, but we will likely hit Frost again Sunday

Had my first lessons there. Did most of my learning at Little Gap. I remained limited to PA skiing - mostly Little Gap - from 80-87 and didnt get to ski anywhere decent til December 88.
-
Learned at Spring and so did my kids. But would only go back if they got a natural dump that opened everything and missed the other areas.

Hunter had the Epic conditions on Lower K27 last weekend, as noted above. More natural snow in Catskills than in New England (or PA, of course) this year.

It is no coincidence I include so many great singers. I am glad you agree they add nicely. I aim to let them shine not to spotlight myself.

Did Mt. Snow on Wed and Okemo on Thurs. Conditions at Okemo were great. Mt. Snow not so much. Only a couple trails (Ridge, Long John and double black Rip Cord) had a surface to sink ones skis in. The rest were hard pack and/or icy. Likely going back to Okemo with kids next week rather than going to Northern NH, as it seems the snow coverage is less good up there. Could still give Crotched or Sunnapee a try one of the days too.
-
Looking forward to skiing Snow, Okemo, Attitash, Wildcat and maybe Crotched on 5-6 of the next 8 days. Think I will do Mt. Snow tomorrow. Got a place in Brattleboro starting tonight. Merry Xmas

Powder as the term is used in ski reports in New England, not Utah

It was indeed remarkable to find a powder covered slope at Hunter. That is why I remarked, and why I skied it 7 times in a row. Helped that it was an unannounced season opening of an ungroomed trail that has gotten over 3 feet of natural snow in the last 2 weeks on top of a snow making assist.

Yes covered

Best day yet of my skison at Hunter. Lower K27 opened cover with pow and the opening was unannounced so lots of fresh fluffiness was still on hand in early afternoon. Found it on run 8 and did 7 straight laps before calling it a day.

Hittn Huntah again Sat. Going straight from Jersey City Office to a friend's place in Woodstock NY Fri Eve, so I will be' up there about an your after I would have gotten home Fri eve, and will be waking up 30 min away to get there in time for early AM turns. That'll make day 4 at Hunter and day 6 overall for the Skison. Not bad for Autumn turns.
