Damgerous Gore conditions last week
Ski2Live Live2Ski replied to Ski2Live Live2Ski's topic in Other Mountains
Cool, I will stay tuned. Psyched to go if conditions look promising. -
I underastand, and feel that makes sense for green, blue, black. But I feel when a resort goes the extra mile to call something double black it should objectively present some degree of challenge or else it is just marketing fluff. Even White Lightning would be a single black at many places, but that wall is the most challenging named terrain in NEPA.

Montage TR 12/16/17 - Terrain Expansion

Actually I doubt it will take ski patrol more than an hour to get you down it :-) -
With the only headwall that arguably deserves a double black in NEPA - unless one awards diamonds for iciness and the hazards created by bad skiers and riders.

If I can drive it in 12 hours I won't fly. -
Damgerous Gore conditions last week

Had been thinking about taking kids to Gore this weekend (they have a kids ski free week) but sounds like conditions are real bad there again. Probably do PA instead unless things change. -
None of us have ever been really picky about boots. When I take the kids for seasonal rentals each year they never try on more than 2 pair of boots. Their mom is so impossible to fit boot wise that it led her to stop skiing.

I will price it out and see. Last year's I found a shop that at rented me skis boots and piles for $40 for 2 days, way less than RT baggage fees. Frontier charges even for carry on. Plus pain of carrying 3 people's boots and skis between cars and airports on both ends.. May also look into a company that will ship ski stuff to your hotel.
-
No. We will rent stuff out there rather than pay the arm and leg to bring 3 sets of skis and boots. Renting worked just fine for me last year.

Booked the flights. 90k of Frontier miles to fly 3 people out of Philly on the 24th and back on the 27th. We will ski the 25th and 26th. Any thoughts on what the most kid/intermediate friendly mountains within 2 hours of DIA are. The kids are fine on PA blues, can handle some blacks, and even did a double black at Montage once this year, but I figure that translates to staying on all greens and blues in CO. This trip will be about skiing at their level, not mine.

Glades skiable? Thinking of heading there Sat.

Nice day. 20 runs. Cliffhanger and Marge were the best. Enjoyed skiing and riding the lift with Salty. Good times.

Not that terrible, but I couldn't find my baclava or lip wax this AM. Even broke out the goggles (which I use a lot more since I started skiing in contacts)

Heading to CB today. You gonna be there SA?

Turns out they closed that trail now. It was called pipe line. It was their one double black. Kind of like Floyd's at JF. Fairly narrow with a nice headwall, a curve, and a runout.
-
One trail with any excitement. Lifts bite. Crowded, mostly with boarders. Went there some when I lived 45 min away, but even then I would often go to the smaller Hidden Valley across the street instead.

I have 3 of them so I am good for 3 days each at CB, Blue, JF and Shawnee. I also have one other CB ticket. Pretty much covered for PA skiing this year other than holiday weekend blackouts.
-
Already got tix for 4 more days at CB so I am good but thanks.

Thanks. Do you know if CB or anywhere else escaped the FR?

What kind of precipitation did Blue get today? All ice by me.

Wonder if it will be worth going out there March 24-28. So far it seems they have gotten about as much snow as my driveway this season. If I go the plan would be to fly to Denver and ski the front range with my kids over their spring break, a first time for them. CO has a 5th graders ski free deal and I have a bunch of extra Frontier miles, but gotta wait and see what happens with this drought before I book.
