Thanks, that's all helpful. It looks like what I have will be fine until I get good enough to realize I want something else. I can always rent fat skis if there's powder. I had a lot of fun on the RTMs yesterday until it turned to wet mashed potatoes. Not sure any ski would have been more fun at that point, because my problem was technique anyway.

No offense taken, I am not a hard charger at all but do want to be on the most reasonably appropriate ski for conditions just so as not to make things harder than they need to be.

I don't really know the difference between all-mountain, big mountain, and powder skis. It looks like I may be lucky enough to end up with a job next year that would put me in proximity to the Tetons, Sierras, Cascades, or southern Rockies (NM). I have Volkl RTM 84s and Nordica Soul RIders (97 waist). If/when I get out there, am I going to really wish I had some other type of ski? Or is what I have fine? This is just non-essential daydreaming, obviously, but I am sort of curious.

You need to hang out at some better places. Some of my very attractive and lovely colleagues go to the Speakeasy Bookstore on the south side of B-hem a lot, and some other place that has a martini happy hour, I forget the name. In the Promenade down in Saucon I think. I will listen more closely on your behalf when they talk about places.

Also I meant to edit that last post with a disclaimer that I'm not a raging narcissist, but I ran out of time, so here's the edit: I don't mean to sound like a self-obsessed tire fire of a human by talking about meeting guys in bars. For context, I retired from dating a long time ago and don't attract attention from anyone, ever. I am as single and solitary as it is possible to be while still remaining a fairly normal member of society. So the phone number thing was just kind of confusing/funny to me. When I read it later I realized that if you don't know me very well, it sounds like I'm a humble-bragging horror show; I was aiming for humorous self-deprecation.

Right? He works at Blue and it was genuinely a friendly gesture, like I forgot about it until I pulled the napkin out of my pocket the next day and just about doubled over laughing. The friend zone can be a place with other friends of hers around to meet, right? Not the worst place to be.

Hey did I mention that last week I was sitting at the bar at the upper lodge and some young guy gave me his phone number on a napkin? (not the same guy who skied with me a few weeks ago--apparently I'm on some kind of roll). I don't know what they put in the drinks up there, but it's an interesting place to be an old cat lady with an appearance best described as "not trying." I looked at the bartender after he left and she shrugged and said "he's actually a nice guy, unlike most of the freaks who come here in the evening." I said "why would he give me his number??" and she said "Beats me." I said "Exactly."

I'm so sorry--I didn't remember your name! I met like 20 people all at once and some introduced themselves by both forum handle and actual name, so I'm struggling. You were playing with your earbud wire, too and I think I thought you were talking to someone on the phone at first-it took me a second to realize you were talking to me. But it was nice talking to you!

Holy cow, I just looked up the season pass rates at mountains near where I'm considering jobs. Sun Valley is a astonishing $2,450. Taos: $1250 Squaw Valley: $1,150 Mount Hood Meadows: $850 Yikes.

Really!? That's surprising. I realized when I started skiing that bringing my skis to a shop for waxes and edge work was going to be expensive over time, so I learned to do a lot of that stuff myself. Any edge tool has an angle setting, so even if you just want to do light maintenance, you ought to at least wonder which setting is correct for your skis. But fair enough, I'm a bit of a trainspotter about taking care of my gear; mostly of financial necessity, both with my stuff and the outing club's equipment because it was crazy hard to get funding for anything so we had to make everything last. I did a lot of sewing tears in tents and backpacks and even learned how to repair the hull of a Royalex canoe. Shoot, I once hit an armadillo with my car and learned a lot about bumper repair. But I see your point about most people not knowing/caring.

But the shop doesn't necessarily know that he's an intermediate. Why wouldn't they ask every customer "do you have an edge angle preference?"

What a spectacular morning! The snow really accumulated quickly, and from 8:30 to 11, it was mega fun. My friend Brooke had some car problems and didn't arrive until 11, so we spent about two hours skiing in the rain. It wasn't torrential but it was more than just showers. The snow was soft but really heavy; the kind of snow that shows you (well, me) that you're not as good a skier as you think.

February 7th powder potential roll call!!
SallyCat replied to GrilledSteezeSandwich's topic in Blue Mountain
We have a principal for the high school, but the headmaster oversees the whole school (elementary, middle, high school). They were blowing snow all over the mountain last night, so it won't be a "powder day" but it should be really good skiing. -

Yep. The headmaster said "Have fun and use your time wisely." I mean, I can only do ONE of those things so I'll see you there. -

I love when they bring us all in and then release 300 children into an active storm. -

If this turns out to be a bust and we have school tomorrow, the forecast on campus is going to be surly with a chance of stabby. -

If school is called off, I'll be there. Meeting up with a friend, so GSS you can meet a new female skier to recruit or alienate! -
Have your instructor take a video. Watching vid of yourself is very, very instructive. And I don't mean from the end of a selfie stick.
