2011-2012 P.A.S.R. Utah Invasion thread....
phillycore replied to phillycore's topic in General Chat
It's hard to judge a place based on one day visit too..... Visit somewhere on a powder day and it could be the best day of your life, revisit it another day and the place could suck. Snowbasin and my Obsethed's didn't get along with the snow they had the day I went, but I bet on a pow day the place kicks ass... I was real high on basin going in and not high going out.... It reminded me of Breck with a lot of windblown shit and fast groomers... The groomers were great, but I didn't go there to ski groomers. The day I went to Alta was 5 days after the 8" we got that week and there was still fresh to be found, the snow was soft, there were steeps and trees galore to play in. It might have been great timing or all the ropes we had to go through that people were avoiding or something, but it left one hell of an impression. Snowbird we hit on the powder day, I expected it to be great, but never expected to like it anywhere near as much as JH or Squaw...as I had put those two in a class by themselves it delivered big time.. PowMow surprised the fuck out of me, I always heard good things but I was expecting it to be really wide and flat... The stashes that could be found were sick, and powder country was off the chain..... I left there thinking wow, I really under rated this place...with a huge ass smile on my face. (I might've had a slight concussion though....lol) Ratings are what they are to the person who skied them and the conditions that they got while skiing them..... One thing's for sure though and it's not even debateable for me any longer.... Deer Valley is no way in fucking hell a #1 rated resort.... unless it's only being compared to those in Pa. -
Don't think I'd be able to make it, but I expect a TR !! Have fun guys!

Doug, First and foremost stop being an asshole. I fell maybe 4-5 times total in 6 days of skiing. I don't go ass over tea kettle on every run, and hell even if I was to in the future if I'm having fun doing it than who the fuck cares! Of those falls most were due to hidden rocks from thin cover. I push myself pretty damn hard so falling or getting out of shape from time to time happens and I'm more than ok with that. I find the falls funny which is why I post that shit up, just like I post my MTB falls up as well. You don't need to be a douche about everything, I don't claim to be any better than anyone else on here, I am simply out there having fun doing what I love to do and sharing my love for the sport with others. The last thing I needed to do was go on a trip to JH with some guy who can't get through life without taping illegal substances to his gonads, and who can't control himself in the marked slow skiing areas putting others at risk. You're like 30 years old man..... you're the true to life version of Jay from Jay and Silent Bob.... Everyone laughs AT you not with you....it's honestly more sad than funny in reality. I'm a mature father of 3 and skiing JH with a wannabe rapping pothead isn't exactly on my bucket list. 80" in 8 days is epic, but I'll take 8" in 6 days with a bunch of friends who have a great time with no drugs,no drama and not even a single argument the whole trip any day over bullshit and an epic storm. I'm only going to speak for myself here, but I know seeing the JH thread when I was out in Utah the only thing that stuck out wasn't the epic snow storm.... it was the fact that I felt bad for Johnny and Jeff. -

I only put Alta ahead because of the variety of terrain and its ability to retain snow. Jackson Hole, Snowbird, and Squaw Valley are in a class by themselves when it comes to gnarly terrain. I am not a vert or terrain whore. I will take mellower terrain with better snow over wind blown steeps any day of the week. I prefer trees and chutes to open bowls and steeps. Alta has a ton of playful terrain while still having bowls, steeps and fast groomers. It had the best variety of any mtn I've skied at which works for me in the fun factor. I loved Powder Mountain for the same reason.... I like the others too and if I went to Utah with a snowboarder I could skip Alta and still have a blast, but if I had only one day to ski and conditions, cost and company were all equal... I'd choose Alta. -

He wasn't drunk while couch jumping which makes it even worse I suppose -
The seam is what I replaced my fubared fuse with. It seemed to fit me the best and I trust the giro line even more after what happened and I skied away. I agree vent switch is mandatory, fuse had this as well. The earpads on the seam felt really tight but I'm sure they will loosen up, if not I always have my tuneups I can toss on it. I like the stack goggle vent too.

Don't know, honestly don't care, was just pointing out that pretty much the whole PASR staff is made up of blue mtn faithful ...... Congrats to Root that's what is really important here, I'm sure he'll do a fine job.

If we were chosen as Mod's we'd need to be PC...... Just because my screen name initials are PC doesn't mean that I want to be..... lol Besides, I don't ski @ Blue Mountain anymore..... (Ducks)

Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed it as Seth is a skiing icon for sure. For me so much so that I just had to own a pair of his signature skis after drooling over them for many years. The guy can truly do it all and he became one of my favorites after seeing him in all the TGR footage over the years. Hard to believe this only has 3 replies until now. I meant to reply the other day but got into the video and forgot to come back.....lol

We stayed in Layton... it was about an hour to everywhere plus or minus. Only got the one dump of 8" and maybe an inch or so the day we were at Alta. -

I can't wait to see the video's that the other crew has... I know they got some SICK shit coming... I survived 6 mountains in 6 days.... Skied open to close at 4 of the 6, (one hour shy of 5), 3 hours on the day of my arrival, and skipped lunch twice. Now I can say I've been Utarded ---- Deer Valley, Brighton, Snowbird, Powder Mountain, Snowbasin, and Alta. After skiing in Utah even on the crappiest snow year in recent history. I can say that I don't see myself returning to Colorado, or Tahoe anytime soon. The Tahoe resorts are the prettiest places I've ever skied. Jackson Hole is the gnarliest mountain I've ever skied. Steamboat is one of the funnest places I've ever skied. But UTAH is the best combination of it all... Snowbasin reminds me of a mix between breckenridge and vail, but the facilities are by far the most upscale out of ANY ski resort I've ever been too. It's the Taj Mahal of ski resorts. Brighton is like the Homewood of Utah - it's small in comparison to the others around it, but there is a good mix of things there to keep you busy and Mt Millicent would put a smile on anyone's face. Deer Valley is unique, I don't really get the whole Valet parking thing and all that, it's grooming is 2nd to none, but I don't go out west to ski groomers. I don't see myself going back there but I would probably take them up on the free quick start ticket again at some point. Powder Mountain- WOW!! This place is a Freaking Gem! It may be old school, it might not have the vert, it's definitely confusing as hell to navigate, you need to be willing to work a little bit to get the goods.... but DAMN POWMOW is a special place. Powder Country is basically bus served backcountry access. It's soooo GOOD!! If you don't want to take the bus back, than you really don't have to, there's stashes to be found everywhere, and I'm not talking about 20 foot sections of flat shit either. If you are willing to do a little polling and sidestepping the goods are there for the taking and there's plenty to go around. If you go to Utah and it doesn't snow for some reason..... POWMOW will still have stashes waiting, I bet they'd have stashes sitting untouched for 2 weeks after a storm. I don't see myself going to Utah and not taking a trip to PowMow unless I just get dumped on. PowMow takes my #1 spot for best bang for the buck and there isn't even a close 2nd. Get there, and get there FAST!! Snowbird - Gnarly Terrain like Jackson Hole and Squaw Valley, and we hit it on a pow day. I really don't need to say anything else..... It's a sick place and I will be back!! Tied in my #2 spot with Jackson Hole as my favorite mountains I've skied at. Alta - I'm officially an Altaholic. I need to join me some Altaholics Anonymous ASAP!!! This is now my favorite mountain dropping Jackson Hole down to a 2 spot tied with Snowbird. It's just my kind of mountain, it has trees, steeps, stashes of soft snow days after a storm, bowls, you name it... Even the groomers rip. The only bad thing I can say about the place is that there are no damn leg rests on any of the lifts. -

09/10 K2 Obsethed. (189) Not a 11-12 ski but I intentionally chose them because of the 105 waist compared to the current (even softer and even more rockered) 117 waisted ski. After I had purchased them, Justo had already told me that there was a speed limit on them, and no doubt he was right. In fresh they float, even with my 240# on them, soft snow no problem. They are an extremely fun ski in any soft snow. On groomers you better keep them on edge or they'll let you know that you aren't. This really becomes an issue on traverses which have been run through and are pretty grooved up, the ski will find a groove and take off and you pretty much have to muscle it back. (Justo told me that this is pretty commen with rockered skis and the Obsethed are my first go around with rocker, but I've found in the past that he's been pretty dead on accurate so I gotta believe him on this as well.) In hardpack these skis like to chatter, and I MEAN CHATTER. Chatter as in you need to make extremely wide sweeping turns on anything really steep or above 30mph or so in order so that you don't get jackhammered to death. I purchased these to use as my good at everything, but not great at anything ski and in my testing in the poconos at Jack Frost they will serve pretty well for that except for the really icy days. Out west however they pretty much took over as my powder and crud ski, but left me with a need for something more narrow. I didn't even bother taking the Rory's out of the bag and after an extremely long day at snowbasin dealing with chatter, I borrowed JF Ski Dan's set of PBR Brewski (K2 Recoil's) for the final day at Alta. (although for the snow they had there which was completely unexpected the Obsethed would've served pretty well) Overall, I'm glad I made the purchase but I'm not sure if I like the rocker or the ski itself. I do ski extremely well on them in almost every condition, but there are some serious weak spots that leave me wondering if I made the right decision or not.

I would type something to defend myself here but there is no point when it's Doug calling you out. What can I say... Douglas Slifkin is the best skier on the mountain. Everyone bow down. -

We pretty much didn't take any go pro video because we were too busy actually skiing, but this was actually pretty comical. From Snowbasin 1/29/12 On te top of Allen Peak on Men's Start (2002 Olympics Men's Downhill Course) http://youtu.be/nDZNxX2cL8I -

This is what Ridge Racer is watching on TV, no wonder he thinks all Utah women are Blonde and Fit.... He obviously has had too many PBR's.
