So with some Maybelline and a new comb you'd hit that? Cool!

I'm trying to stay on Lib's good side. I figure a high power PASR mod would make for a credible alibi.

BB's jumps have more snow? Yeah, okay, Rob. You keep telling yourself that. You know, Rob, if Sno pulls this off next season for a 2+ month period, kids at other ski areas who are looking to get 'noticed' may be at a little disadvantage. I've heard through the grapevine that some big magazines have been making inquiries with the PR department about setting up photo shoots. But I suppose you aren't really one of those people who care about stuff like that.

The earliest version on Wayback Machine only goes back nine years: SkiMontage

Yeah, I think so. NASTAR gates aren't usually screwed in as tightly as USSA gates and a great racer like Dante sometimes leaves a course in pieces. I haven't heard anything, Bob, but will be heading over today or tomorrow.

Hana just doesn't look like a snowboarder, but I guess that's beside the point.

Blue owns a TV production company?

Great tr and pics, but that's the same helmet cover Jeff had as a kid, so you might wanna have a talk with him.

Per the 100 day guarantee, it's pro-rata. If they close after 99 days, an adult early purchase passholder gets $6.25 off next season's pass, if I figured it out correctly. That's pretty cool, although if a ski area can't be open 100 days, it's because of terrible weather and I'm not sure I'd really want to punish them financially. Beat me to it

*Four inches of snow compresses to about 1/8" when groomed. Why is that funny? Check your driveway the next to you drive home after it snowed. *When is making snow in PA not necessary? I heard that same thing said when they were hammering Sno's NF right before it was 60 degrees and rainy two weeks ago. The mid-winter conditions we enjoyed sure made us happy they had "wasted" the money. *The Elk founder spoke at a public meeting prior to the Montage sale and said this,"The best way for a Pennsyvania ski area to make money is to install a water park." After being a CB passholder for years and suffering their early closings, hearing it from someone like that made me soften my position on hating ski area water parks. But mid-December to mid-March is 100 days. *Just out of curiosity, is the 100 day guarantee a 'true' guarantee? Do you get a full refund?

Be nice, Doug...this from TODAY'S Blue Mountain website: POSSIBLY 1 TO 2 INCHES TONIGHT

It just sounded funny to refer to Sno as chaotic...it's more Valium-like, IMO...and the Lazy River exposed? That was at the beginning of the season and it was under the beginner area If you guys dig a hole on West Slope, I'm not sure I'd care. Again, I've written positive things about Elk for five years. It's my second or third favorite hill in PA.

I was looking at it from a pitch/fall line stand point only. I've done laps on Susquehanna long after Blue was closed.

Your looking at the calendar page? This was the projected opening date back at the beginning of the season. It says this on the conditions page: "Loki's is terrain park is open and work continues for the 22' half pipe!!! Snowmaking continued on all trails last night and will continue around the clock as weather permits." I think I'd rely more on a conditions page than an old calendar.

Chaos at Sno? Cool!!! Susquehanna is a nice run, but, uh, comparable to Razor's or Challenge? Did Elk regrade it or something? Not straight fall line, though.

Ha, good stuff, Glenn!

A terrific coach, one of the nicest guys you'll meet, and recently the 'fastest man on the hill', our own Dante hooked a tip in a slalom training run and took a sled ride this afternoon. Last I heard, he has a broken tibia...but I'm hoping it was just a nurse's hair stuck on the xray. We're all hoping the best for ya, buddy.

Wow, thanks for the vid link, that's too cool. There was just no way we could have stayed after getting there so early and having to be back this morning. It looks so much better than I expected from the one's at Windham.

1. Wow, you'd have been the worst meteorologist ever And, just FYI, we're talking about valleys and the surrounding mountains, not the Jersey shore. Why try to confuse a specific discussion by doing that? My point was a comparison between Sno's North Face area that sits in a valley as opposed to Elk's diamond runs which run off the upper mountain of the ski area. The Jersey Shore? C'mon... "A nocturnal inversion is formed on clear, calm nights from late fall to spring. The ground cools much more rapidly during clear, calm nights than the air above it. The layer of air touching the ground also cools more rapidly than the air above it because the lower air is touching a cooler surface. This cooling effect is enhanced when there is snow on the ground. As the night wears on, this process creates a layer of air where the coolest temperatures are found closest to the surface and the air temperature increases with height. Because the air near the ground often cools to its dewpoint temperature, water vapor in the air condenses into liquid droplets and radiation fog is formed. In northern regions of the US where there is at least partial snow pack, nocturnal inversions occur approximately three out of every four nights in mid-winter and roughly 50% of the time in the early and late winter season. A temperature inversion is created when a stable mass of warmer air lies or sits atop a mass of colder air. This prevents the cold air from rising and mixing with the warmer air. Mountains surrounding a valley or basin act as a rim, much like the sides of a cup or bowl, and prevent the cold air from moving laterally." AMS newsletter 2. It's cool that Elk gets 20" more snow than the city of Scranton over a five month period. Isn't that about 4 inches per month? "Squeezed out"? Sheesh, by the time the lake effect ribbons reach NEPA, "squeezed out" is an appropriate phrase. Do you really think 20 inches spread out over an entire season is somehow comparable to what BB (or Sno) can make in a weekend with it's superior snowmaking? I'd sure take 300 inches of PoleCat snow over PA lake effect dustings any day. 3.Slalom and Susquehanna are diamonds, but you have a problem with Cannonball being a diamond? : 4.Elk used to have great conditions relative to other PA ski areas. With the warming trends of the last decade and Elk's refusal to invest in snowmaking, it has now been surpassed by BB, Seven Springs, and Sno. Both Blue and CB's superior snowmaking would make them better, but they haven't seemed to strike a balance with grooming/snowmaking and the crowds. Stop by CB on a mid-week morning after they've blown and groomed Marjie's and savor the difference over skiing old, regroomed snow. Your myth will be busted. 5.Embrace the future and let go of the past. Elk is the straight ski, rear entry ski hill of NEPA. We all loved our Rossi 4S slalom skis, but they just aren't competitive anymore...start a petition drive for some real snow guns. I'll sign it! We do!!!! I've been skiing with a ton of Elk skiers every Sunday after noon. I wish Elk would return the favor.

Just to add, Chippy, there isn't really anything to pick on in this pic. Here are the good things you have going on: *Your hands are high and forward. *Your inside leg is bent and your outside leg is longer, with just a slight bend---it's still a slow part of the course, so it's not necessary to be more dynamic (dynamic=having your legs out away from your body) because you are riding a mostly flat ski to gain speed through gentle turns. *Your skis seem to be tipped equally. *You aren't a-framing (inside knee isn't pressing toward the downhill knee).
-
You have a really good 'high tuck' going on in that pic, Chippy. It's a good position to be in as you enter the headwalls because you are transitioning from skating to stand up turns. Save the low tuck for the last five gates in the flats before the finish line. Got it? A great example of high tuck turns are on the GS course at Beaver Creek. Racers leave the wand, then spend about 15 seconds on flat terrain that has rollers. The World Cup guys use a high tuck and pump through the rollers before cresting a super steep breakover.
