Some of the generators allow a 3x wattage burst for 10 second for starting large appliances. Power outages in fall/spring aren't an issue as the basement is near perfect cellar temp already it's a risk we've been taking.

We were looking at an Generac that would run on either NG/LP. We already have a transfer switch (would need to upgrade to an ATS), but I think 10-15k would do the trick. We have a 4ton AC/heat pump (with oil as a backup heat source), oil hot water heater, 2 fridge/freezers, a eurocave wine refrigeration unit. Pretty sure that would already be near 10kW.

heh...we're in the market for a 10-15 kW generator all of a sudden as well.

I haven't been at my house since 9am, but when I went to bed last night I could see my breath. I'm at my dad's office getting some work done as Lehigh evacuated the dorms last night at 5pm due to no power/security. I stopped in my office at Lehigh today, and heard the four generators working hard to keep our data center running. No signs of electricity yet at my house, as none of my servers have come back up yet.

Freak out? Nope. Extremely calm. They had me out of there quick. If not for the weather they would've flown me, but bus it was. The most painful part of it all was keeping my [5 day old] Lange boot on my right foot for the entire ambulance ride. My foot fucking killed. I kept asking for more morphine because I couldn't take the pain from the boot I think I was posting on PASR with the lights and sirens going haha
