1) We got season passes to kirkwood for this season. It made sense for us because it is awesome and on the cheaper end of passes. I like to stay in South Lake especially in winter, there's more to do. For you, I would say use this year to explore the area and buy early season passes next year. 2) NO! Probably not very good, might be since its an El nino year but typically Christmas is too early for good natural coverage. It's a bit of a crapshoot. And re: $20K in that case -- I'd go to Antarctica. With a stop in Patagonia. But really we are saving for a house in Truckee or Donner Lake. Los Gatos real estate is BEYOND outrageous and we will continue to rent our primary residence indefinitely! You heard me -- I want to rent forever!!!

Bank it! All our relocation $$ went straight into savings.

I just bought my husband a 09 Custom X. But nothing for me so far.

WHERE is the best place to ski if you don't drive
Erin808 replied to Robert2's topic in General Chat
Everything is groomed early season, plus its a lot of man-made to make it to that opening. -
Kirkwood Northstar Squaw Probably not going to do a trip that requires a flight this year since we are in the middle of moving but definitely a week in Tahoe in January or February. Plus a couple of long weekend trips. But I am still really enjoying the summer. I don't usually really miss riding until October.

Ecto -- Skiiers complain about how riders mess up moguls. I would agree that moguls are A LOT harder on a board than skis and we impact their shape. You are right that it wouldn't make any more difference than a pizza wedge but the reality is that boarders who suck can side slip anything and make it down but beginner skiiers aren't typlically going to slip down a double black run. I think for a few places it a differentiator and they like the notariety it gives them at this point. I've ridden Alta and Ajax (before they let in snowboarders) in the past. I admit I thought it was pretty cool at the time but would not go through the trouble at this point I don't have a ton of respect for the holdout mountains at this point. I mean it's so 1996.

I'm still a maybe. It will be a last minute decision if I can take Friday off from work and maybe 1/2 day Thursday.

I have heard that Burton capstraps really only stay put with Burton Boots.

Awesome ecto! Sounds like you hit it right. I am still totally happy with what we got. With how dry January was out there it was just nice to get some fresh snow even if it was tracked out. Saturday we took a bye. We were going to hit up Heavenly since we were checking out and going back to Reno (and its close to the hotel) but I heard conditions sucked and I didn't want to miss my spa appointment at 3. And we stayed out gambling late on Friday night. Some friends came into town on Saturday and we hung out, ate, drank and gambled I went to bed around midnight but the rest of the crew was at the tables until 7-9am. We scrapped Northstar and opted for Mt. Rose because it was close and would be uncrowded. Also, there was an avalanche there the day before we arrived so my theory was -- if they had an ave, they have snow. But it was raining at the higher elevations and it snowing at the Rose base but just barely. It was a really wet system. The terrain at Rose is all pretty similar. Moderate steeps with some really good bumps. They have this area called the Chutes that is super steep in parts but the run out is really bad and you have to take a lift to get out and another lift to the top. It was great terrain and more protected from the storm. The light was FLAT outside of the trees. It was a day of Sierra Cement but still super fun. And I was glad we went to Rose b/c I heard from some peeps at the hotel that it was raining at the base of Northstar and 2/3 of the lifts at Squaw were closed due to high winds. It was as much fun to hang with my family and friends as to ride. And we didn't make enough to pay for our trip but we did walk out of the casino up for the weekend

Yeah no pics and in fact this is all made up. I was sitting at my apt in Philly all last week. We got in Wednesday night late, our flight was delayed and we got to the hotel in Reno about 1AM which is past my bed time in any time zone. I had to convince my sister to get up early and hit the road. She is not an early riser and we were staying in Tahoe Thursday night so we all had to check out and leave. We finally left around 9AM and got to Kirkwood around 10:30. We had discount tix for $44 which was awesome. There was no new snow in 24 H but there was 26" in the last 72 and it was 35 at the base with blue skies. We got my borhter-in-law set up in the beginner area and checked out the front side. There were some really good runs off of the Cornice Express chair. The locals were SUPER nice. Everyone who I spoke with on the chair was a fount of knowledge on the different runs and conditions. The snow was as good as it gets without being powder but by the end of the day the warmth was starting to wear and it was a bit heavy. Helped out my bro-in-law for a few hours in the afternoon in the beginner area. Then just took some more front side runs on the Wall and Chair #11. There are some great wide open gullies that were not too steep and really fun. The tree cover on the front was nice too, very open. Finished up and made our way to Harveys' in Tahoe (you know its where the party is, right?). Sweet room on the 17th floor with awesome lakeviews. Grabbed some dinner, did a littel gambiling -- mainly slots and roulette but lady luck was not with me so we hit the hay around 10PM. Friday made it to the hill around 10AM but forgot our discount vouchers -- oh no! But my sister was able to fax them from the hotel (she skipped riding altogether) so overpayment was averted. We immed went to check out the backside and I was SO upset that we didn't make it there the day before. It's kind of a pain to get there, three lifts to get to the top and mainly just traverses between those lifts. And I am a total complainer but they could use some more detachable lifts. With the exception of the Cornice Express on the front side, all the lifts we took were fixed grip. The backside was serviced by one main lift and there was a t-bar along the ridge. I only took the t-bar once, the terrain it serviced was good but not great enough to make me want to traverse over there and take it up. There were two ridge-top surface lifts that are new this year. I guess all of that was only accesible by hiking. I heard more than a few locals joke about where they were going to install new t-bars. There was still a lot of in-bounds hikable terrain and there were a lot of people hiking it. All in all I really, really liked Kirkwood. The people were super nice and the terrain was great. I thought some of their signage was off, like some blacks should be blues and some blacks should be double diamonds. But those are pretty minor. When we move back, I wouldn't mind getting a season pass to Kirkwood.

I agree Nick. Even with the aggregator sites like gear attack its still getting annoying. I guess they proved to be so popular that they want to capitalize.

Back home, it was a great trip. My camera was not working -- I swear -- so no pics. Hit up Kirkwood for two days and Mt. Rose for one. Have to get through work today and will post some trip reporting later.

I don't think we are hitting up Sierra but we used to go there TONS growing up. We used to have a house in Strawberry However I would rethink that if they served a drink with swedish fish in it Compared to Brian my trip report would be weak. No smoking tikis or multiple ear piercings among the males in our group. I am totally stoked to see my sister and ride Tahoe (I've only ever skiied there). Leaving in about two hours, I keep getting calls from my sister who is already there gambling and drinking cocktails. I will def post a trip report and will include at least a few pics when I return. I am not really an on-mtn picture taker so we shall see.

Leaving Wednesday. Have a bunch of new gear meeting me there so it's like Christmas in February with a vacation thrown in. Going to play it by ear with the resorts. They are getting a storm right now so I hope that makes up for a super dry January out there.

A little late on this thread. It looks like to decided on the NS Lotus 154? I went through all of this last year and totally agree about the Feelgood! It sucks b*lls! I am so glad I demo'd it before I just bought it because I would've been so unhappy. I love my Rome Blue and find it to be very stable. I also have a Salomon Ivy and don't find it to be as solid on packed powder but prefer it out west. As for women's specific boards. They are typically narrower than mens and lighter. They are supposed to be better for a smaller frame to control. I have ridden both women's and men's boards and definitely prefer womens. Especially now that most manufacturer's have a few on offer. The offerings used to be really limited so to meet a certain standard you had to turn to the men's boards.

I didn't do this deal but I do order from sierra snowboards and their shipping time was long once. But the 3-4 other times it was pretty quick. Plus I've had to return stuff and it was no problem. Hope you got your stuff Kyle.

I just saw that Liftopia has some great deals for Sunday tickets for those of you not watching the game. Check out the link below. They only have discounts for Shawnee in the Poconos but there's some in NY and VT. http://www.liftopia.com/super-bowl-ski-ticket-sale.page

I don't know of anything that lists it in one place. Depending on the level of their sponsorship, they could get dropped for competing or getting photographed in other manufacturers gear.

Which locations are you guys going to? Mogul said KoP, are they up 202 N? I've been meaning to check it out because the ones in the city have jack.

You know their lifts are slower than Elks and Elk doesn't have a high speed. I don't know if it's old motors or what but I know they were slower than Elk.

We pulled into the parking lot on Saturday at 9am. The mountain had a good crowd, not crowded but there were lift lines. After this day of riding I am totally an Elk convert. We loved it. The snow was great, there were lift lines -- not long jus a full queue, but there was enough terrain that it didn't feel crowded. I rode pretty much everything that was open. I liked Tunkahanok the best. The moguls at the top were in pretty good shape, there was some ice between them but it was easy enough to spot and hopefully avoid. I felt like the runs were really long and the lifts were pretty quick even though they are fixed grip. I felt like there were challenges to the terrain and I didn't get bored like I do at other PA mountains. It snowed most of the day and I think they got 2-3 inches based on what was on my car when we left. It started snowing harder later in teh day and the drive out sucked. The drive to 81 was trecherous at best. 81 was okay but 84 hadn't been plowed in hours and there weren't even ruts in the road. It made me almost wish we left earlier but not really, we made it back to Tanglwood fine. We are going to plan another trip to Elk but stay near Elk next time.

Drove up from Philly and made it to the parking lot around 9:30AM. There were no cars there but I guess after such bad conditions earlier in the week people were staying away. The only two lifts I saw running were Phoebe and Iron Horse. We did a few blue runs off Iron Horse and the snow was pretty good. It was still cord and not icey. It was totally empty for a while. The cruised down to Phoebe and did runs off of that chair. The stuff to skiers left was pretty steep and I was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty quiet the whole time that we were there which was nice. The lifts were really slow though and the runs were short. I liked the double blacks but it was like flat, flat, flat, steep, flat and it just took such a short time to return to the lift and then an 8 minute lift ride. It was a good day and the conditions were pretty good but I doubt that we would return. We were staying in the Poconos and were going to go again Sunday but I thought I would be bored doing it again two days later.
