  1. People were sneaking in the trees all day yesterday. It's deep in there. In 35 years of skiing here I never saw conditions like this. The base is unbelievable. A fair sized crowd with three minute lift lines occasionally. Caused because they were only running one of the doubles at the lodge instead of two. Bumps on Tunk were soft. Today is Spring Carnival, hopefully the weather will cooperate
  2. I used to drive my plow from home. It was at least a 2.5 hour drive one-way and tough on the front suspension. So, ten years ago I began taking my John Deere garden tractor up with a 54" snow blower. That became the perfect tool. It fits in the one car garage/wood shed and throws the snow 25' off the driveway. Often times with the plow, I'd end up with no more room to push the snow and with the banks alongside the drive, any drifting snow would quickly fill up the driveway. Last year I made an enclosure with a golf cart rain cover to make the job more comfortable. I made it without telling any of my regular crew about it. Got lot's of chuckles out of that one. Edit to add; I checked Elks present conditions and they are now saying they received 30" of snow.(?). This morning's report said they got 20" in the last 24 hours and yesterdays' report said 15" in last 24 hours. 20 + 15 = 35 right?
  3. Elk got 35" in the last 48 hours. Base went from 24"-36" to 56"-65". After spending the last two days plowing, shoveling, and just plain b++ching about the 24" I got in Western Schuylkill County, I'm headed to the Elk Cabin to deal with the conditions there tomorrow. Our driveway is about 400 yards long and downhill across an open field. I'm expecting some 4' drifts. Just getting to the snow blower is going to be an adventure... But skiing this Friday through next Friday will be awesome!
  4. It's Boo-eeee, pay attention GSS. Very interesting BTW, look it up.
  5. But $2.50 for an Apple is just cruel....
  6. For the rest of the season there won't be any lift lines longer than two minutes. If you go during the week they will be nonexistent. You can get 5 runs in an hour (unless you're a slow poke). On a half day ticket that's 20 runs, and because the lifts are "slow" the trails are uncrowded. Definitely works for the "Elkaholics".
  7. He definitely knows his business. Moved from PA to CO and worked several years there (Vail on mountain) as boot fitter and tech. Moved back to PA to get married. Also in same area (around Elk) is Idlewild Ski Shop, they work extensively with Elks' race teams and ski patrol.
  8. They'll turn the guns on for sure, gotta restore that base until Spring Carnival at least.

    Current Conditions?

Saturday 's usually the busiest day. SP holders usually ski from 8:30 to 10:30. Take a break until noon, then ski until the lunch crowd comes out at about 1:30. Sunday is less busy and by afternoon a lot of the crowd is headed home. You can also run the singles line on the quad or the double on the quad side. another tip is most skiers will head to the quad side first, so around 11:00 am the twin doubles at the lodge can be less crowded. Overall skiing will be less busy than Blue and the Pocono mountains. Montage is the exception and should be a good choice depending on amount of terrain open. All of ELK's trails should be open by MLK weekend.

    Current Conditions?

Update: 1:00pm Conditions improved since Friday. Blew additional snow overnight on many trails. Packed to loose powder on most slopes. Tunk is now moguling. Top speed this AM 56.8 mph. Not bad for a 66 year old. Bar beers are cold....

    Current Conditions?

Very firm Packed Powder. Won't take much traffic for ice to peak out. All the moguls are gone on Tunck Slalom will be closed for racing. The West Indians should all be open, in fact, every trail but Lehigh will probably be open by Sunday. Skiing's great- bar beers are cold...

    Current Conditions?

Most parties are held at the half-way house by the roaring fire pit. I've seen a few over the years in the parking lot on Spring Carnival weekend. Oh and thanks Jeff for that very accurate beer menu update.
