  1. Found an interesting article with pics and trail map on Ski Snowpeak, located between State College and Harrisburg. Plans would have made it the mountain with the most vert in PA, before it closed. Link: http://www.dcski.com/lostareas/viewlostprofile.php?id=18
  2. onthesnow.com has CB's projected opening listed as 12-13-06 and they give a projected closing of 3-13-07. Blue is listed as 12-1-06 and a closing of 3-31-07. I was surprised to see a projected closing date, this early.
  3. The 9pm update on Killington says that they are making snow
  4. I just checked it, right now it almost looks like a recording.
  5. They have the coldest temps also, except for maybe Elk...but the two are probably pretty close. This might be a chance for them to show off the new fans.... From accuweather for Lake Harmony: Nov. 2 Thursday's Low: 24
  6. Anybody know if they made any progress on putting in their new snow guns? 193 by the start of the season is now looking unrealistic.
  7. Yeah, I already got one, even though I despise the changes made to the pass, like losing the discounts and validation of the non-vip passes. Distance was the biggest factor. I made it down to Blue three times, at the end of last year, and plan on getting down there a few times this year.
  8. I love JF and there is something different than any of the other resorts in PA. It might be that it is surrounded by more forest and trees than most resorts, or the fact that it is spread out wider than the other resorts. I don't know if I would rank it the best, though. It is definately more "speacial" or distinct than the others.
  9. 65 additional fans at BB seems like a lot, considering they added a bunch last year. I would have thought that JF would get more than 85...unless if their theory is to flood BB, since it is a smaller mountain and not spread out as much as JF, which would make BB easier to build a deeper base . 85 is still better than what JF had. Is there any word out about if they plan on opening BB again, after the snowmobile races in March?
  10. Did they put any more than just three fans on the East Mt. side? I thought that entire area should get a lot more fans that just three. 150 fans is a lot of fans, and I hope they didn't just concentrate on using them in the parks, because there are a lot of people who don't do parks. . I like everything except for the moguls. I value my knees and I think part of the problem that I sometimes have with my right knee is from falling in moguls, a couple years ago. I stay away from them like the plague.
  11. According to onthesnow.com, BB is 475 and JF is 600. They have JF's longest run as being 2.7 miles. That must be from getting off the East Mt. lift and skiing down across the top of the mountain, then down the far side slopes (frosty and ridge run).
  12. Shit, I just realized that it will be only two weeks until the NY mountains might open , especially since night temps are supposed to get cold. I have to get my skis checked and waxed, this coming Monday since I'm off work. Pic of the day from Belleayre...first snowball of the season
  13. The upcoming forecast looks good and the 15 day accuweather forecast has cold temps at night . This Sat and Sun it's supposed to be 26 at Lake Harmony at night, and on Mon. it's supposed to get down to 28. Also, lows are listed below freezing from Nov.1 on, according to accuweather. If JFBB is serious about a Thanksgiving opening, this might be the time to take advantage of the temps. Highs are listed in the mid 40's, which man made snow can last through.
  14. As long as I can remember, Boulder closes a week before the snowmobile races to get ready, and this year they are listed as March 24 and 25th. Hopefully, they will re-open after this...unless if they plan to keep JF open longer. This is almost imposible because JF doesn't have lights. I've been a JFBB pass holder for three years. There are more people at JF during weekdays, than at BB. I've often thought that financially it would make more sense to open BB later in the day, since most people go to JF during the weekday....even though I liked having both options because I am an adult who works second shift and I go mostly in the mornings. Regular skiers and riders outnumber people who use parks, during weekdays. Also, JF's tickets aren't any more expensive than other places because a full day ticket covers JF and BB for the whole day. You can also look at it this way, you get freshly groomed snow in the morning at JF, then can get freshly groomed snow in the afternoon at BB.
  15. I might go...not sure yet
  16. Nope. It's Juliana Margulies, one of the original cast members of "ER." Anthony Edwards, also from "ER," was the video director.
  17. That's the reason I got into skiing. A few years back, I went to BB to watch The Badlees play, and in between sets watched people skiing and fell in love with the sport ever since. So if it wasn't for the band playing there, I never would have developed the interest. Which by the way, I miss seeing them play as a full band anymore. They were one of the best original bands to come out of central PA, in the early to mid 90's. Here's a link to the MTV/ VH1 video that went into the top ten in 96. http://singingfool.com/default.asp?frame=h...lishedid=704154 Anybody recognize the famous actress????
  18. Then there's the almanac's. Nobody seems to know.
  19. Here's a piece of an article from accuweather.com. The link to the entire article and snowfall forecast is http://headlines.accuweather.com/news-stor...1&article=9 " One of these factors that Bastardi and his team expect to shape the upcoming season is the formation of a high pressure area over Greenland or northeastern Canada. This would force Arctic air down into the Northeast. If this occurs as expected, the Northeast could experience severe, prolonged cold - ten days or more of temperatures averaging five to ten degrees below normal - during the middle to late winter, most likely during the month of January. "Signs are pointing to the possibility of a rough conclusion to winter for the Northeast," said AccuWeather.com Director of Forecast Operations Ken Reeves. "Examining past years where we see similar patterns to what we expect this winter bears this out. For example, the winter of 1992-1993 was moderate until early February, when it then became colder and snowier, and culminated with a harsh blizzard on March 13. Another of the winters we see a parallel to is 1957-1958, which again began more moderately, and concluded with significantly colder temperatures and major February and March snow storms." " I hope we get this cold and snow .
  20. Did you go to BB or JF or both?
  21. Elk actually had the longest season. JF stayed open as long as Blue, but held off a week later to open to have almost all of their terrain open.

    Testing

I wonder if anybody will use the below freezing temps to test out their snow guns, this weekend, especially the resorts that installed new equipment ?
  23. NOAA (National Weather Service), is saying the same thing....warmer than normal, but not as warm as last year .....http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2006/s2716.htm
  24. I did that my first season at JF. I saw a pile that they were blowing on and was excited to see "deep fresh powder." Needless to say, it was like hitting a brick wall. That was the only down side of my visits to Blue last season. I went at the end of the season and they would groom the slopes, then blow a coating of fresh snow on top of it. It was ok, after being ran over a few times, but was tricky until then.
  25. I saw a few of the new SMI fans that BB has mounted on poles pivot automatically on their own and swivel back and forth, sort of like a floor fan, that way the snow spreads out and doesn't pile. I don't know if all of them can do this, or if only a few of them do.
