One of the reasons I thought about going was because I thought it would be cool to ski a mountain where the Olympics were held. Other than that, I assume there's nothing speacial about the mountain??
-
I was looking at the view from the top of Elk and was trying to figure out what mountains are north of Elk. Are those the Catskills or Adorandaks that are visible in the far distance? I know Elk is in the Endless Mountains.
-
The food prices are cheap, at Elk. Example: $1.59 for a slice of pizza. I actually heard somebody complain that they thought that was expensive...I don't know what planet they are from.
-
You gotta get there. I was there Wednesday morning / afternoon and it was excellent. They are also still blowing snow to open the one or two trails that they didn't get to open yet. That's what I call loyalty toward customers. Most place would throw in the towel, this close to the end of the season.
-
Friday should be good , if we get the snow. Weekends have the biggest crowds, but even then the lines aren't bad...especially on the east side of the mountain.
-
I don't see JF being too crowded on a Friday, since most "kids" are still in school, during their hours of operation.

I was thinking about heading to Whiteface Mountain, in upstate NY. Has anybody been there?
-
It took a while, but after a while I noticed that and figured out why they called that slope "river shot."
-
I never noticed it . It's amazing the scenery that you never take the time to look at because you are too busy There's no chance of that being Big Boulder????

Two resorts have new owners, CB and JFBB. It will be interseting to see if either resort stays open into April, if weather permits.
-
Yeah, restrap them before you get off the lift, or just after getting off.
-
No pun intended, this might seem like a pain, but have you tried losening your bindings, when riding up the lift? I know of a couple people that have to do this and it helps eleviate the tingling.
-
I spoke too soon . I just checked their site and they have down that they are making fresh powder on numerous trails Monday night...
-
I hope so. I was there Today, Mon. 20th, and was really impressed at the amount of snow they blew over the last few nights. All the trails were in excellent condition. As long as it stays cold, or at least doesn't rain, things should stay in good shape. I have a funny feeling that this will be the end of the snow making, since we are now past Presidents Day....but I hope they prove me wrong.

Morning conditions were excellent, with the heavy bands of snow that came through this morning (Sat. Feb. 18), putting down a couple inches of fresh powder at JF

I was at Elk Wed Feb. 15th (1230-9pm). During the afternoon the snow was soft and sticky (48 degrees). I didn't get to wax before I went up and certain spots almost stopped you . By 4:30, it was cooling down and the snow started to get hard and packed and re-froze. It was excellent from 5:30 on Able to get decent speed.

I bought some rub on wax, for the heck of it. I did a search, but didn't find anything to answer my questions. Anybody know if using this rub on wax could have a negative effect? I was wondering if putting this on and not getting all of it off could actually slow me down. It came in a deodorant type container and it has a rough pad to rub it off. I almost bought a liquid type teflon wax. Is anybody familiar with that type? I was looking for something quick to use, to hold me over between hot waxes.

I was at Elk on Thursday Feb. 9th and the conditions were excellent....packed powder. Plus it snowed from around 6:30 until close and came down hard at times.

Like I've said before, I'm a weather weenie and monitor a lot of the models that the forecasters use. Right now, one of the models, the GFS, is showing 12 - 18 inches of snow for the Pocono area. Also, a meteorologist who runs a daily column is saying that this storm might have the potential to be ranked up there with storms like the blizzard of 96. I'm superstitous, so I don't like it when all of this hype starts happening, this far out. It's still too early to tell. Earlier in the week, the models were putting the storm out to sea or not even showing it. Now they bring the storm in closer to and up the coast. Too much time left for changes.

I'm starting to get a little more excited now. This is from the national weather service. "SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STATE COLLEGE PA 811 PM EST WED FEB 8 2006 PAZ004>006-010>012-017>019-024>028-033>037-041-042-045-046- 049>053-056>059-063>066-091745- WARREN-MCKEAN-POTTER-ELK-CAMERON-NORTHERN CLINTON-CLEARFIELD- NORTHERN CENTRE-SOUTHERN CENTRE-CAMBRIA-BLAIR-HUNTINGDON-MIFFLIN- JUNIATA-SOMERSET-BEDFORD-FULTON-FRANKLIN-TIOGA-NORTHERN LYCOMING- SULLIVAN-SOUTHERN CLINTON-SOUTHERN LYCOMING-UNION-SNYDER-MONTOUR- NORTHUMBERLAND-COLUMBIA-PERRY-DAUPHIN-SCHUYLKILL-LEBANON- CUMBERLAND-ADAMS-YORK-LANCASTER- 811 PM EST WED FEB 8 2006 ...A WINTER STORM MAY AFFECT PORTIONS OF CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA THIS WEEKEND... Still to early for me to

www.noaa.gov NOAA seems to be the most reliable. It's the national weather service's site. Stay away from accuweather. They seem to be the least reliable. They hype up storms that don't even exist, or even become reality.

I know how you're feeling. I'm sick of us not having any snow. It always seems like the storms miss us, when it gets cold, but always hit us when it gets warm ( by the way...this is due to the stupid jet stream).
