Ride Delaware ? replied to Margaritaville Skier's topic in General Chat
I saw a boarder ski patroller toting a sled for the first time at Killington this year... I rode up with a girl who said that they actually make you qualify in either snowboarding or skiing, even if you are cross discipline... Doesn't look like fun, and I can't imagine doing it on moguls, but I'm sure I'll figure it out quickly... -

I have done my research... Most resorts take EMT or OEC... I will work on one of those next off season (probably EMT since OEC is not offered anywhere near where I live)... All Boyne resorts, Sugarbush, and Killington (from the ones I have checked) will take WFR... Boyne will not train you... If you decide on Killington, they will actually get you an OEC course... Thats what I've got so far... I'd be pretty happy anywhere in the Northeast... Yes, all resorts aren't created equal... But if it goes well this year, maybe next year I will explore other options... It would be easier to score a job somewhere else (MRV/Stowe/Jay) if I had some experience... But to answer your question Doug, I am taking some classes at the end of August, and if I complete them successfully, then I will be certified for WFR... I haven't checked Delaware yet, but many states actually allow you to qualify for the EMT test with a WFR certification... -

For the bottom line, in the East Coast? Yes... Probably... But have you not enjoyed it on a personal level? I know you have... And it really ups my stoke level... -

Just 12 weeks until I start bitching about no snowmaking... -
SnowEast Annual Reader Survey Results

I've never been to BC, but I do follow their improvements, and I must say, they appear to be large scale projects that add to a resort style vibe... I will say that my criticism has been based on it's size and geography... I will probably never go there... However, Blue is bigger and I do go there... So what's taking them so long to get on the bandwagon? We all know skier visits are there... -
SnowEast Annual Reader Survey Results

Especially since one of the main development ideas throughout all stages of ownership at Killington (including the current one) is to create a "real" village. Look at the Northeast Passage idea... It was supposed to link up to other property that would have a village at the base. Northeast Passage gone, development never panned out, still no village... As for Bear Creek anywhere on the list? Please... Especially four slots above Elk? I'm an Elk groupie, so I didn't want to get into it since I'm biased, but really, Bear Creek? -

Still a terrible list... Should any PA mountain be in there? Not overall... 7 springs or BB for park maybe? -
Results Here I personally think most surveys are ridiculous, but this one definitely ranks near the top of that ridiculousness. That being said, the demographic is most likely skewed toward city dwellers that only get out once or twice a year to the big resorts. However, I figured I would post this and point out some of our PA and NY resorts that made the list... Overall Resorts -Belleayre #3 (I like Bell, but someone seriously football batted that one) -Holiday Valley #4 (Never been there, and it looks small, but it could be a fun local mountain) -Bristol Mountain #5 (Haven't been there either, but a friend of mine went to school there and said it gets crowded and is mostly boilerplate, but you take what you can get) -Hunter #9 (I dont know how it beat out Whiteface, but 6 spots behind Bell? Really?) Favorite Resorts Under 1100' (I like this category) -Camelback #4 -Bear Creek #5 -Elk Mountain #9 -Blue Mountain ? (Must be a typo) Camelback also placed #9 on favorite terrain parks, while Elk also placed #8 in favorite classic resort. Like I said, not accurate, but hey, its entertaining for mid July with 100 degree heat coming...

Much rather have cold weather and snow anytime of the year... Although its nice to have bikini season down here lol... Days are getting noticeably shorter already... The Sunday River/Killington early season showdown is only 3 months away... And... My AC is working just fine...
-
Or early morning rides to the top in the snowcat...
-
That's one of those places I'd visit just to visit so I could say I rode it before it shut down lol
-
I tend to agree, but when they opened with a park on Nov 9, I took that as open lol
-
It's kinda far and not that good... While I know your joking, I don't think anyone here would trade a day at Blue for a day at TWood...
-
Big Boulder had an open day in May this year...

Next to nobody has announced any improvements for the 2011/2012 season as of yet... If there was a new lift or trails we would have heard of it through the permitting process, so as is usual in PA as of late, I'm sure there will be increased snowmaking, new rentals, some new rails, and maybe some minor infrastructure improvements... We probably wont see a list from resorts to start rolling out until late July to early August...

I'll never take advantage of this, but I'm glad a bunch of people are still getting at it... It would be sweet if somebody was still trying to get something like this done at Blue... But that will likely never happen...
-
I don't care if it was bad as long as it wasn't a sheet of ice... Glad your still getting turns... I took my last turns close to 3 months ago...
-
Killing it again, and in a completely different state... Keep up the good work and dedication... I love seeing it now that it's basically July... Even though you said the snow cover was still good, it is definitely visibly thinning and your having to hike down small sections... Either way, keep getting at it while you still can... Summer may yet arrive in the CO backcountry...
-
Interesting... I never knew that... Wouldn't be surprised if they eventually have a small village if this hotel/indoor waterpark ever gets built... I think it's ridiculous, but it's placement may one day allow for eastern expansion which I support for any ski area...

If its got that good of a vacation base, and has the tools to be a four season resort (lake), then I don't see how somebody couldnt turn it around and make the whole venture profitable... I must not know something...

To be perfectly honest, a $50,000 loss isnt that much in the whole scheme of things... If Magic Mountain can revive itself, slowly sell shares, and do all its capital improvement work itself, while also starting to break even, then I am sure Tanglwood could make it happen...

I didn't figure anyone would go back, and I probably never would go there, but if I had it in my backyard in Delaware, I wouldn't complain lol Its actually pretty far North... Definitely farther north than the rest of the Pokes... But definitely farther South than Elk... Same distance to the state line with the curve in the far Northeast... Anybody know the elevation?
