I wouldn't call that bad at all... Definitely looks like a good amount of pow pow... I just don't think we have had anything epic the past couple years where we are all like "remember the blah blah blah season? That was a season"
-
Although I wouldn't be able to benefit from a BC rep, it would be nice for one to be here to assist in the season pass discount, give some inside info, and to bounce some ideas off of...
-
Id be ok with a real winter... Seems like it has been awhile since we have had one, and we are due...
-
We are lucky we have any of them... You seem to try to get rid of them...
-
Here's the deal in your situation... If your a ski junkie and seriously love the sport, your going to want to maximize your time on the mountain... Especially if your young... Furthermore, if you can't drive, your going to want to pick the closest mountain to your house... Just learn to be happy with what you have, not upset with what you don't... A day on the snow in the winter is better than sitting on your ass at home playing some video game...
-
Nah mean?
-
I would say that it is still considered a good snowfall season, just not a good ski season since it didn't happen evenly during the season... It's more likely they had a good month...

Wouldn't being a college kid actually make him poorer than the average middle class person? I don't see where that argument comes from... In terms of earnings vs expenses, I'm sure his pass is more expensive than yours because he has less money... And he's probably got more expenses due to tuition etc? I'm not seeing where the argument is?

It's been a long time since there has been a winter event for the area that has been all snow... Many storms end up being snow on the front and rain on the back... A couple one foot dumps would be sweet, and a long time in coming... I don't think Boulder will have another epic November 9 open this year, but I think they will have something by the 20th... Im going to be an optimist this year and hope everyone in the NE is open by T-Day, and everybody in PA without a set opening date is open by the first weekend in December...
-
I don't have the stats in front of me, but I would think that snowfall in PA has much less an impact on skier visits because PA typically has very little snowfall... In the northeast where they get 5-7 times as much snowfall, I think it has a larger impact...
-
Should they?

I don't think anyone wanted to hear about your warm nuts... Truth be told, the people taking the fancy vacations and going to the top notch resorts are upper class... I do agree that skiers tend to trend toward the upper echelon of society based on the costs of the sport, but I know plenty of people who aren't even close to upper middle class that have a SP to lower costs, or stalk the deals so they can afford to ski... Once again, you've made a generic broad sweeping statement that probably only tells one point of view...
-
I think the problem is that most mountains aren't run by the majority of middle class skiers, they are run by the upper class that tend to add improvements that they would like to see (spa, high end dining, nice hotel, waterpark), not stuff that the skiers skier would like to see... Thats why rven if they do rebuild or reopen that snack shack, it will be bigger and classier with higher priced items than ever before... Once again, each to his own... You can't have everything you want the way you want it. Like Winter stated about Elk, he loves the skiing, not the amenities... However, If you improve the Amenities, then you will begin to attract different skiers who want different things, who want the high speed glamour lift, and once you get that, your going to change the skiing... The conditions won't be as good, won't last as long, and crowds will increase... No more 5 minute lift lines on peak weekend Saturdays... The simple truth of the matter, is that most mountains are managed entirely different... Sure, most of the terrain can't be replicated due to geography and geology, but half of what makes the mountain what it is, is the vibe, which is perpetuated by management by the improvements they make, the prices they set, and the marketing they enact... Unfortunately, your not going to make your mountain change the way you want... They may tweak small things, but no big changes... I understand that the mountain is out your back door and while another mountain may be more of your style, it's too difficult to get there... Just be happy you have something... This is America, so nobody is ever happy with what they have, something always needs to be different... The best you can do is fill out a suggestion card and hope they don't throw them all away...

Looks like someone is trying to jack my weather thread... I think we are due for a cold and snowy winter season soon, but something about this year is making me nervous :-/

Seriously, WTF is with this Weather?

I remember that weekend... Everything fell into place with temperatures... Everybody dropped into prime snowmaking weather and they were eager to test out the new fan guns... Unfortunately, Mount Snow just doesn't have the latitude or elevation to do that consistently... That was a rare event... -
I think everywhere from the Catskills southward got trashed last year... Only Hunter was able to get all their terrain open. Platty and Belleayre rely significantly more on natural snow and didn't get too much over opening 50% of their terrain at once. Even Elk struggled to get to their 100 day mark... Usually they hit 110 and then close in late March/Early April without any snirt and full coverage. From what I've heard, BC probably could have had a better product on several trails and it would have held up better, but considering their location, they did alright...

Totally understandable... The stairway really only has two positives in that it gets them open early and allows them to stay open during the week. As much as I love SR, they don't run the Locke Triple on weekdays, and I hear the line there can be even worse... When they download, it is often only loaded every other chair from the bottom... The only time I ever rode the NRT by choice was during an elevation based event a couple years ago... About halfway down the mountain the snow changed over... I lapped the NRT and some woods off Powerline for most of the afternoon... That being said, I had the luxury of riding all the way to the bottom when I was done.. No hike necessary... -

Hopefully somebody will be shredding at BB before then... Is there an early season trip planned to K-Mart this year? -
Doug doesn't view any mountain as legit if it doesn't have a HS lift... I don't see it the same way, but that's his call... He also wouldn't go to Bear Creek even if it had a HS lift... It doesn't have long enough cruisers for him, or steeps so he can get mad steezy fast on the sweet n low, nah mean? Simply put, Doug just likes HS lifts and will rag on newhere without them... I'm surprised he doesn't get upset that Blue hasn't replaced the Vista double with a HS lift... And lastly, while we would all like to see some major improvements, management will undoubtably decide to put in some new trees, new snowguns, make previously free parking paid, and maybe get some new boards for the rental fleet...

Up in Maine we had a pretty average winter when it came to temperatures, if you exclude the 80 degree first week of March... We were way under in terms of precipitation -

I've seen some things that look good for temperatures in August and September trending downward... We need some rain to fill the ponds... SR usually blows out the mice in late September... I doubt that is going to change... -
Told you...once again the Times eats their words.

Well, I don't know what the term of the loan was, whether it's a 5 year 20 am or what, but if they initially owed 7. something and now only owe 6.6, they are definitely paying some of it off, they just couldn't pay it off in full... I mean, if it was a five year 20 am, then by definition they have to refinance or pay it off after 5 years... Who knows why the same bank couldn't refi them... They may have had too many commercial loans on the books or they no longer liked them, or couldn't give them the terms they wanted... There's a bunch that could play into it... I don't know if it's any better that financing is "imminent", but it's better than being at a sheriffs sale... -
The resort has been operating daily since the announcement, so they found short term financing somewhere... They also say that they found long term financing, but publicly, the sale hasn't been called off, so who knows what to think... If my understanding is correct, if no sale happens, then the debt holders will probably be able to sieze the property and then try to sell it privately in a sale... That's often when we see ski resorts split up assets piecemeal to satisfy their debt... Once that happens, the chances of the resort being reopened are next to nil...
