Making Turns

Making Turns (3/10)

  1. I found one skiing at whiteface 2 seasons ago. We turned it in. I don't know if the guy ever got it back or not. My friend here found one mid june up at targhee in the terrain park. Seemed like it had been there for a good chunk of the season. That was a year ago june and it worked and he still uses it. oh yeah and i've lost two phones to water. They have that little strip in the back so they know it got wet. I got one of my replacements off ebay and the other I built from my first wet phone and my dads broken phone to get a good one. My phone is a really old school kyocera now that you can talk on for about an hour before the battery dies and the screen sometimes works. I think I may get a new one soon since this ones about dead now too. The stupid things only last about a year.
  2. This reports a bit late...but i figure this time of the year it's better late then never. Gotta keep the dreams of turns alive. Last week Louis of telebulldog fame came out to visit and we decided that some binding testing was in order. Chris and Collins thought we were crazy (Louis and I) for thinking we could find something to ski this late in the season but we were determined and off we went north. After a good bit of driving we arrived at the summit of Sawtell Peak. The view was spectacular (as long as you were looking away from the radio towers) We were originally planning on hiking a few miles to get to a bowl on the next peak over but after some looking from the summit we found a line with much easier access. We parked down next to the radio tower in the picture and climbed over to the line right below the tower. The snow was a bit heavy but not bad for early afternoon in the end of june. The run started open then choked and got pretty steep before opening up a bit again. Here's me coming through the choke (click on the picture to see an animated version, the files are a bit big so it might be pretty slow for anyone on dial-up). After that run we had to scramble back up to the car for a binding repair and found our next run along the way. After swapping out my binding we headed down for our next run. We skiied that once and the corn was so perfect we had to go for another run. Louis snapped a few more pictures of me on the second run (again click to open an animated version). Then we passed the camera off and I got a few of Louis near the end of the run (again clicking on it will load a moving version). After the third run we were both feeling the elevation and decided to call it a day. So we headed over into Yellowstone and did a little sight-seeing and had a nice swim in one of the lakes. We then grabbed some dinner on Jackson Lake and eventually got back to Driggs around 11. It was a great day of skiing and exploring. Gave me some hope for July turns.
  3. So today we decided that some...uh...product testing needed to be done. Lucky for us the lift at Targhee was now open sat/sun/wed for summer operation. So for only $13/person we got a ride to the top and an excellent lunch when we returned to the base. The lift opened at 10:00 and around 10:30 we piled ourselves and our skis on it and headed up (it felt weird carrying skis onto a ski lift). When we got uptop we took a short hike down the cat track then started scouting a route down off the back. After looking over a few frightening cornices with large cliffs below we found a nice open nicely pitched line that dumped into the drainage below. Chris tryed to snap a picture of me coming down this At the bottom we took a break and enjoyed the spectacular views Then we spotted a line collins had skied last winter and decided to traverse up the drainage to check it out. We got to the base of it and started booting up After reaching the top it was time to turn around and head back down (sorry for the crappy pics...we were having trouble with the action shots today) Collins Chris Then we booted up again and headed over the front...We were able to ski a rather enjoyable run in the trees almost all the way to the base where a tasty lunch and beverages were had.
  4. I live almost right on the access road for grand traghee (it's about a 9 mile drive up in the mountains) but I havn't got up there yet. I look at the mountain everyday out the window. I think were gonna head up this week because they started turning the lifts for summer activities so we can get a cheap ride to the top and have a lot less skinning to do.
  5. VTmark asked me to post my TR's for the summer here...so hope you all enjoy... So after being out here in Driggs, ID for two weeks. I finally got the chance this morning to make some turns. We arrived at the top of Teton Pass around 7am. We threw on our gear and after a short hike we made some turns down through the tree's to the base of the bowl we were headed for. We stopped to put on skins but had to wait for a few minutes for our skis to dry if we wanted any chance of the skins sticking. Then it was time to head up the moutain. After a relatively easy skin the view was quite spectacular Then It was time for some turns. (Chris was lucky enough to get his picture taken) We had had our doubts about the snow since the temp didn't drop below freezing overnight but other than being a bit slow it was just about perfect corn. So after a short discussion we headed back up for another run. I personally would have liked to do a few more but chris had to be at his sisters graduation so after our second run we threw our skis on our packs and hiked back up to the truck. It was a beautiful morning and really felt good to get turns again.
