I heard that the old High Speed Quad will be rebuilt and installed on the West Side for NEXT year. However it will be converted from a high-speed detachable quad to a fixed grip quad.

By the weekend, I think Killington will have top to bottom and close the staircase. They might charge more though. Also watch out in New York State... to raise revenue they have State Troopers out on the highways with radar 7 days a week.

How long a drive for you guys to Killington? For me it's 5 or 5.5 hrs. from youtube, looks really good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kOGUUjpdUE

Was looking at the ski conditions report on Elk's website today (Mon. 3/22/10) and noticed this: "Comments: Spring Skiing Special, $25 lift tickets! Both terrain parks are closed, terrain features are on the West Slope! Tuesday is Senior Day! $20 lift tickets for seniors 65 & over! Wednesday is College Day! $20 lift tickets for college students with photo ID! Our Winter Garden Restaurant is closed, the bar area will remain open! Elk will remain open for day skiing & riding thru Saturday, March 27, weather permitting!" So I called Elk's phone number and asked the woman if the $25. lift tickets were for Monday only and she said that the $25. lift tickets are for all this week and Saturday also!

I think you can encounter like 16 descriptions of various surface conditions in the warmer spring temps. Examples would be: Loose Granular, Corn snow, and "Sierra Cement". Sierra Cement can be wet, sticky, deep and difficult to ski in, wider skis help a lot. I love spring skiing, DO NOT FORGET to put lots of sun tan lotion on your face and you must wear sun shades over your eyes as the sun is extra bright and bounces off the snow into your eyes. One tip is in the slushy wetter snow is to weight both your skiis 50/50.

I am not an insider but Elk really never goes into April at all anymore! They usually shut down after the 3rd or 4th weekend in March. The sad part is they run out of skiers, and have plenty of base left. Perhaps there is a small chance of going into April if the skier count is up... but if they see no one coming on weekdays late in the season they pull the plug. The reason they were open into the 1st week of April, 4 years ago was because some filthy rich business owner who has connections (I think he owns several Chevy dealerships in PA)arranged to have a special event put on for junior US Ski team members with Ted Liggety who had just won a Gold Medal in the 2006 Olympics. The event was slalom races.

Agreed! Somebody texting could easily catch an edge, and go off trail, slam into a tree and be killed instantly or paralized.
-
Some pics from Plattekill. A female skier was texting on her cell phone and fell over the side of a trail and was trapped in snow up to her eyeballs. http://www.firsttracksonline.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8723

Here is a vid I found on youtube and it shows someone cruising down Tioga an intermediate trail then they turn off onto lower Tunkanhock (upper Tunkanahock is a big-time mogul run) also intermediate and ski down to the fixed grip quad. A fairly long ski run and all intermediate level. Just an example from Elk Mtn. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXyipjSZxpQ

Quote from Elk's website: "Between Wednesday and Thursday, we received 9 inches of fresh snow" Up here in Binghamton, NY on the PA/NY border we got 5.2 inches from last Weds, storm and we are 44 miles north of Elk.

WOW!! From the Belleayre website: http://www.belleayre.com/promotions/featured.htm $20 lift tickets and $10 rentals every Wed. through the end of the season: "The 20/10 Wednesdays have been so successful we are extending that promotion through the end of the Season. Every Wednesday Lift Tickets are $20 and rentals are $10. Join us and find out what the buzz in all about!" $25 lift tickets every Fri til end of season: "$25 Customer Appreciation Day - every Friday is a $25 Customer Appreciation Day for the rest of the season! You can't find a more affordable place to ski and ride than Belleayre! Nobody discounts more than us! "

Nice ending. I was there on Fri. 1/22/10 for the Winterfest with the $20. all day lift ticket when purchased from a participating ski shop in advance. The skiing was awesome. I thought they were going to have the demos again, but they didn't, I inquired and they said this time it was skier appreciation day (no demo guys this time). What is sad is the postings on the bulletin board in the half-way house about stolen skiis. Someone had 2 pair of Dynastars stolen, a man's and womans pair.

I did post the youtube video on Alpine Zone back on 1/13 in the non-northeast trip reports: (very interesting vid) http://forums.alpinezone.com/showthread.php?t=70219

Like I said, I bought a 24 pack of Coors Light and asked for two stickers. I will definately stick the stickers onto the case and then cut them out.

Skied Elk today on Demo day. Tried 3 skis: Fischer Watea 84, Dynastar Sultan 85, Elan 888. Not super crowded, fairly short lift lines. I am a GS cruiser so I did a lot of runs down Susquehanna and Tuscarora. Asked around about the Coors Light discount lift tickets. Someone said to stop at a beer distributor and ask to see if they have any of the Coors Light Discount lift tickets to Elk Mountain. SO on my way home to Binghamton,NY, I stoped off in Hallstead, PA and went to the Beer Store. The guy did have some of the Coors coupons - Good on Wednesdays for a day or night lift ticket for $20. Valid Jan.6. 2010 through March 10,2010. So I bought a 24 pack of Coors light and I asked the guy if I could have 2 vouchers and he said sure. Actually they are stickers that say Elk - Wild Wednesdays! $20. Lift Ticket. (Not even sure if a purcahse is required but I like Coors Light).
