WHOA!!!! People lets calm down here... As I read these hostile posts, and look out my window at the 10 inches of fresh, and still coming I can't help but think we're all on the same side here, and fighting over a stupid point. Skiing and riding is the livelyhood for many of us, and where we buy our gear means very little once we're out on the slopes using it. Shops will never die and the online business will continue to get stronger. Each has their place in the market. Thanks to E-bay and the online used ski trade our sport has become a little less expensive to get into. Which only means we have opened it up to more people. Now isn't it a good thing that others can share in the joy of what was once an elitest (*sp) sport. The equipment we use to slide down hills is expensive (mainly due to the materials they are made of and the labor in producing the final product), and if the difference on what you're riding on depends on where you bought it, then what's the problem. We are all trying to be on top of our game, and the best we can be. Let's not forget the sport, and the passion that we have for it. If you want service you don't goto Walmart, but if you don't want to pay 15 bucks for a Mach 3 blade then you do goto Walmart. Same with buying skis. Except it would be a cold day in Cuba before I ever bought skis at Walmart. What this whole post comes down to is... Lets not let our feelings about whether shops or e-bay is better interfere with the bigger picture. We are all out there to do what we love. The equipment was all made in the same place, once you click in it no longer matters where you bought it, but rather what you do with it after that click. Enjoy the freshies and end the bickering. Ski season is here, let's use it!

It actually just started snowing here! The lake effect bands are puking on us right now, so I'm gonna go climb in bed and say my snow prayers and hope for a re-opening this weekend! If not a trip down south may be in order for this weekend. I know the rest of the NY mountains took a beating, so we'll see. I may just get an oppurtunity to ski in PA afterall! Goodluck and have a great opening weekend! It's been a long time coming!

Bad News Folks... The higher ups have pushed opening day back to December 9th. The weather isn't cooperating with us, so snow making is not an option at this point. The ground is also VERY wet, and very not frozen, so getting any type of snow to stick to it would be a chore. Check back for more updates. I'll keep you posted!

I've heard of some bad jokes in my time, but this one is just down right dirty.

Elk is a lot like Greek, in that our profit margin is VERY slim, and sometimes non-existent. All the money we make goes directly into keeping the operation going. This is actually the hardest time of year for a ski resort. If pass sales are down, and pre-sold product is down then the mountain doesn't have money to blow snow, pay people, run lifts etc... Until full operations begin all the mountains are surviving with whatever funds they have from Season pass sales. Elk has a lot of overhead that has to be taken care of, and if they've gone through their money all ready, it makes sense that they would be on the verge of bankruptcy. However, I think they will be able to pull through. Postponing their opening will save them money. When mountains open early they often don't make any money out of it, because it is mostly pass holders skiing, and well like I said above, the money pass holders bring in, is already spent. Hopefully that all makes sense, and I was able to provide a little insight for everyone! Goodluck Elk!

Elk is a good mountain with a huge customer base. If they can't get thier finances straight and have to sell the mountain, someone will come in and keep the mountain going. Done right it could be a nice money maker. I don't think we will have to worry about Elk being gone forever. They should remain open for this year, and then I'm sure we can expect some changes.
-
That is very true. From a business stand point it is good news for us. However, it is a tragic loss for the ski community and all man kind. Skiing is life, and when a place that gives life has to close, it's never good for anyone. Any details on Elk's bankruptcy would be appreciated! If you know something please keep us informed!

What's the number you called? This is big news for Greek Peak. They are our biggest competition in the region! Could mean good things for other areas! Thanks!

The Snow Pack At Greek Survived The Spring like temps and the rain that would have had Noah putting on a lifejacket. We're hoping for some cooler temps the rest of the week, and a couple good nights for Snowmaking. Winter is coming back in Central NY, and we should be open for the weekend! Check back often for more updates!

Hey everyone, I've been selling stickers on E-bay for about 2 years now and thought maybe some of you might be interested. I normally sell them for about $2 a piece on E-bay, but for PASR members I'll knock it down to $1. I have stickers from Rossignol, Rossignol Scratch, Atomic, Bode Miller, Nordica, and Tecnica If you're interested or want to see pictures e-mail me at mountainstickers@hotmail.com and I'll send you a picture of what I have! Thanks!

Did I read your message right? Did you venture up to Greek this weekend? If so, tell me your thoughts! I'd love to hear about your experience! And if you were up to the mountain, I'll apologize ahead of time for the large group of instructors learning to ski switch in the middle of Stoic this afternoon! Thanks, and... THINK SNOW! I'll mention that in my sales meeting tomorrow... Can't make you any promises, other than I'll get laughed at, but I'll let you know how it goes!

Yeah it is a shame we won't be open this week. We're expecting some unfortunate unseasonal temperatures and snow's worst enemy (rain) early this week. And I don't care who you are, no one wants to ski one decent run in the rain. Especially in November. This weekend was BEAUTIFUL! Lots of fresh snow on Saturday and an empty mountain today. Overall Greek had a strong showing for opening weekend. The mountain plans to reopen next weekend, and hopefully remain open every day for the remainder of the season. Check back, and I'll keep everyone up to date! Don't forget! December 24th is SKI FREE day at Greek Peak. With the donation of one canned food you'll get a free lift ticket! We'll be open 9-5, so get you shopping done early and come on up and ski for free before the fat guy in the red suit comes!

We're looking to do that in the future. We wanted to choose a mountain that we didn't really compete with. Once we weeded those few out we were only left with a handful of options, and then from that bunch BC was the only one who decided to get on board. BC is all we're offering this year, but look for reciprocal agreements with other mountains in the forthcoming years! If you'd like a more in depth reason as to why we're not partnered with more mountains, personal message me and I'll give you the low down! Thanks for the question and the input! It's good to hear stuff like that! College Students or those soon to be! Come to Greek this year and see what it's all about! If you like it, get a pass before October 16th of next year for only $129 If you come 3 times you pay for it! It's a great deal and something to keep in mind! If you really like Greek we're selling the college passes now for $239 Remember... Skiing and Riding is much more fun that school work!

Hey Ya'll, I would just like to welcome you too the newst topic on PASR! It's all about Greek Peak here, So if you have questions, comments, or are just looking to stay up to date on what's going on at the peak, well then you're in the right place! Thanks for visiting and have a wonderful season! THINK SNOW!

At this point I don't know, we're looking to have some nasty ski weather early next week, and they don't want to make a ton of snow and then just have it melt away. Check back tomorrow, and I should have a better answer for you. We're probably a few hours from Belleayre. We're in a totally different part of the state. If I had to guess I'd say 2 1/2 - 3 hours. We're going to have the beginers slope and a nice blue cruiser open, if that helps your decsion. The snow phone is - 1-800-365-SNOW
-
Oh man, I totally forgot to mention that deal. It's actually 25% off a daily lift ticket with a BC seasons pass or the Squach card! So come up take advantage!
-
Tickets for this weekend will be $35 for adults and $30 for anyone 7-14, and if you're 6 and under... It's free. But here's a tip, if you find a season's pass holder who will say they came with you, take them and their pass to the ticket window to recieve 25% your ticket. That will work all season. So your next step, make friends with pass holder! Goodluck and pray for snow!
-
Ski Areas make their money off of those people who only come out one or two times a year. Pass holders and school programs help pay the overhead (salaries, snowmaking, equipment, etc...) And the profits are made by ticket sales. Nobody is a fan of the weekend warrior, but it's nice to have them. Think about it this way, when you goto Vermont or out west, you're no better than those people who ski at Blue one or two days a year. I guess my point is, that even us smaller resorts can have locals or regulars and guests. I just feel bad for those who still pay full price for lift tickets.

Greek Peak is about 45 minutes from the Exit for Elk. We offer great ski and stay package prices. $78 per person per night. Lift, Lodging and a Continental Breakfast! The hotel is about 8 miles from the mountain in a college town, so there's always something going on! If you would like more details, just send me a message! The trails that will definetly be open are Elysian Fields, Stoic, and Alpha Slope, with the Progression Park hopefully by sunday. It's dumping up there so we can only hope for more! You're right, the website does suck! It's getting better I'll promise you that! We made the decsion to sink the 10-15 grand it would cost to make a beautiful website, and sink most of it into the park, and other areas on the mountain. So while the website sucks, the real reason people ski and ride has been improved. Greek Peak isn't flashy, we know our place in world, and we offer some great terrain, great snow, and hardly ever have crowds. So the site sucks, but the mountain gets the job done!

Greek Peak will be open for skiing and riding on at least 3 trails for Saturday and Sunday! Winter has arrived in Central NY! Check back soon for more updates!

Greek isn't bad. There's a ton of terrain to keep any true skier occupied. This year I hope to get her to duck into the trees with me, and get her dropping some cliffs. Teaching her to ski was a lot of fun for me as well. While I taught her to ski forward, I got to work on skiing fakie. It was good for everyone involved. Come up to Greek, and I'll show you where the good stuff is!
