I took it as the bone grows back BIGGER in that area, but not necessarily stronger. If they were in fact stronger wouldn't you see a smaller number of re-fractures than you do? Why do so many people break the same bone over and over again after they have done it once?

Yea I don't believe that either - look at professional sports. You never hear anyone say "Well he'll come back stronger than before because the body heals better than before" What you are thinking of is how skeletons are continually regrowing, and will adjust a bit to what you do. Thats how the pros take slams much harder than things we do and avoid getting hurt, their bodies are used to it. But if you actually break something, it is going to be weak. And then things go downhill real fast. My room mate broke his arm skateboarding, and then a year later he hurt it on a pretty standard surfing slam. And then he broke it a third time 2 years later basically tripping. It did NOT get stronger over time, and now he has the titanium rod with 16 screws and the double scar up his arm to prove it.

There is one in Manhattan too, forgot the name though.
  6. Now we're getting somewhere. Looks like monday should start a period of possible snowmaking. 5 days out is not that far out so there must be some bit of truth in these forecasts. Given that it is a week and a half prior to Thanksgiving, I have to believe I will be getting one day in at Boulder to burn off all that turkey and pumpkin pie I will be eating. Accuweather
  7. Mine are pretty tentative, I'm slacking this year. Overnight Trips 1 week in Utah, January 7-15th hopefully. 1 trip to mount snow to use up some vouchers I have, probably just a weekend Would like to do a weekend each at Killington, Stowe, Jay Peak. Those depend on weather/money For day trips I want to hit every eastern PA, NJ, and Catskills mountain in one season. I haven't been to Sno, Elk, or Windham yet. Haven't been to Hidden Valley in 4+ years, haven't been to Shawnee in 2. Always good to see some new trails. Maybe I'll even hit Roundtop and Wisp for the southern tour.
  8. My girlfriend and I won last year and we tacked an extra day onto one of our VT trips on the way home and did about 5 or 6 hours there midweek, always good to see some new trails.

  10. Ha "mass produced". I just had a picture of a bunch of GM robots making jibs now that they aren't making SUVs. All jibs are made by hand which means no two are alike anyway, even if they have the same nominal dimensions, do they have the same quality? You can get 2 "identical" boxes and have one where the plastic is a bit too high and you'll be catching it all day and it will suck, and one where it is just right and its great. I just want to see this damn park setup. Lets get some cold weather in PA. Any word one what the early season offerings will be?

BCC = Big Cotton Wood Canyon. LCC = Little Cotton Wood Canyon. Going on Google Maps and just look up Solitude, Alta, Brighton, Snowbird, and you will get a feel for their locations. The neighborhoods in SLC near there are Sandy/Midvale. I've been told staying on Ft Union Blvd in Sandy is the way to go, and I have a list of hotels somewhere but I don't have it at the moment. I'm deciding between Park City and the BCC/LCC stuff myself, and if it were only about skiing I would go BCC/LCC in a heartbeat but for a more rounded trip Park City has the nicer town.

    Crash Pads

One tip I have found to help people I was teaching is to make them keep their hands in fists. This way when they fall there is less leverage on the wrist due to the fingers bending backwards. It really helps.
  14. That is a really light-weight setup, I could see that being a great combo. I really wish 32 boots fit my foot I have no idea what boots I will end up with but I've had the Missions and the Cartels in years past and I liked them - though I broke both - and Burton seems to basically shift their technology down one rung each year so I would basically have the same bindings I used to for less money.

    Crash Pads

I'm surprised you guys wear them because we only sold a handful a year. I would say 10-20 helmets per wrist guard or more, and 10 wrist guards for every crash pad. I'm not knocking you for it because I've thought about it but just never put the money down, maybe I will this year. I was always worried about it limiting mobility and didn't know anyone who rode with them so I had no reviews. I have 2 days that I had to leave the hill from tail bone hits. One was that big down-flat-down mountain creek used to have. Tried to go off the flat and clear the down, caught the last few feet to the back of my knees and landed on my tail bone in a way I've never done before or since. It hurt more than anything I've ever done before and I've had been to the hospital enough times in my life to make that claim. The other time I way over cleared a decent jump at MC and started rolling down the windows and somehow the very first thing to hit the ground was my ass in the flatland that just wrecked me. I couldn't sit in class for a couple days it was funny as hell. My friends nick named that jump Bubba. Not sure if crash pads would have helped in the 2nd case but I'm sure in the first it would have.
  16. I'm not a huge Planet Snow fan either, but who else makes commodity rails? Blue, JFBB, Bear, Mountain Creek, Shawnee, Roundtop all build their own jibs. Hidden Valley NJ bought some old ones off of Mountain Creek. Sno and Camelback now have them from Planet Snow. If JFBB, Bear, Mountain Creek sold their jibs retail then sure that would be great but honestly they seem like the best option for Camelback at the moment and I'm stoked. No matter how bad PS's are for the year, they are significantly better than what they had.
  17. Legit best post of the season so far. For brands, I've had Burton, Salomon, K2, and Ride. I liked all of them and the demise of each boot was due to packing out so there are certaintly more than just 32 and Salomon making good boots. I've had BOA for the last 3 years and had no trouble with it. I like it on the outer laces but not the inner lacing, I found the placement of the little crank on the inner lace bites into the side of your ankle a little on my K2 T1s, I had to do a little bit of post-purchase "adjustment" to the plastic to get it to be more comfortable. As for 32, they make great boots. However, you have to try any boot on. I have tried 5 models of 32 boots on for the last 3 years and every single one fit me horribly. But lots of people come in and love them. I must just have a weird foot but for me, they feel like crap. I wish they fit though because they are very light, have a good flex etc, but they just don't work for me. Even within a brand, there are some Burton's that feel great and some that feel horrible for me. It isn't a matter of running big or small - you have the heel cup width and the toebox shape and a host of other factors that all contribute to fit.

I don't understand the "in PA" part. I use a helmet all the time everywhere, and wrist guards when I feel there is more risk than normal (park or really icy days). When you go north or west, the snow is softer, the place is less crowded, it seems like you need them less. I think riding this area is the most dangerous riding I do, I have 0 faith in the people "skiing" around us, where as when you go to other places its you and the hill and a lot less can go wrong.
  19. Just got an email from some of my friends who are taking a study abroad to Switzerland this winter and where wondering about going snowboarding. I don't know about her friends, but the one who emailed me has never actually gone snowboarding before (what a crime! I won't get to the Alps for 20 years and she never even went to Mountain Creek!). Anyway, does anyone know anything about mountains there, and/or where to look. My usual go-to for USA ski resorts is skiernet.com but they have nothing for Europe.
  20. Yea I just realized that the monday your forecast starts with is NEXT monday not this one. You know those models are basically a trend from today to a weighted average right? Lets look and see what it says next weekend and i"ll be excited. What is for sure is that I will be hiking again this weekend and not skiing.
  21. Haha, I see that as a feature not a bug. I'm used to the really stiff ski boots and I paired up K2 T1's with Ride Teams for basically the stiffest setup I could make without going to plate bindings. I'm backing off that setup now because while it is amazing for carving and pipe it blows out your knees on hard landings. I'm going to swing the pendulum in the other direction this year and go with Burton Custom's and some soft boot for a really really forgiving park setup. And if you want to see a HUGE heelstrap, go back to the Drake's from 02ish. They basically have a piece of tire for a heelstrap.

  23. Yea I'm a bit confused. NOAA's 10 day outlook is 10 degrees warmer.
  24. Our local rink melts theirs too, I really don't why they would go through the expense of doing that when they can just dump it outside. Never bothered to ask about it though.
  25. It is true that people don't think about the tune on their demo board, but the reality is that the tune has a huge influence on it. There is a big difference between the demo board that has the edge sharped more than once a week and the average rider who hasn't had their board in the shop in years. I love hearing people say "I demoed this board and it held so great on ice" and then you look at their board and the edges are rusty. I think demos are the best way to pick a board by far, but customers need to be aware that the tune on a demo board has a big impact on what you feel in regards to edge hold and that a high end tune on your current gear can be one of the best investments you can make in skiing/snowboarding.
