My elementary school had 15 kids with the last name Patel, 1/3 of the class was Indian. By high school that number was diluted because the other 8 elementary schools that feed it didn't have such a high concentration. Still, every single one of them spoke better english than this guy. In fact almost every one of them spoke better english than the white kids. I think this is a 13 year old pretending to be Indian having a good laugh off his racist ass jokes. Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it. If I'm wrong, I'm glad you like skiing here but if you are traveling all the way from India you should try Vermont out unless you have family around here. If you are a 13 year old having a good laugh - jokes on you buddy. My friend was born in India, his dad actually does own a Dunkin Donuts to fit the stereo type, but he got a 2350 on his SATs and is going to Columbia and will probably make more $$$ than all the kids who figure out how to graduate from your crappy PA school combined. And he gets laid more often than you do. Racism went out in the 60s, anyone still clinging to it is just afraid because they are unable to compete and are grasping at anything to try and gain a sense of superiority.

big boulder PARK Upcoming Events
method9455 replied to Boulder Park's topic in Jack Frost & Big Boulder
The TransAm used to be a Mountain Creek contest right? The big one was the Grand Prix and the 2nd tier was the TransAM and the Tour De Creek, and once the Forum Youngbloodz. If they lost the Grand Prix and the TransAM they are losing everything. -
I would not want a HS quad on east mountain, I used to think I would, but it would get skied off too fast.

Isn't it the DFD, then the flat box, then where the butter box was is empty, then the picnic table? From my eye it looks like it is still there, but I haven't been there in a week.

Brought my laptop all the way to vermont, then realized I had wiped the hard drive about a week before we left and never replaced it. Whoops. We're having a good time, I'll post a full TR later. Got lots of pictures. Mount Snow had melted down completely this week from 100% open to about 50% open with lots of dirt patches. Snowmaking weather rolls in tonight. We're going to Stratton unless the gondola is on wind hold tomorrow, if it is on wind hold we're going to Mount Snow. (See Camelback isn't the only one who does wind holds, Stratton cut off their gondola when gusts hit 50, reducing trail count to 28). Weather has been warm with spring like conditions, monday was overcast, tuesday was bluebird, today was rain/hail/then bluebird. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. Mt Snow's park is nasty, definitely better than Boulder's. I learned a bunch of new tricks but busted up my right knee yesterday. I took it really easy today and its doing a lot better. The hot tub helps. Hopefully PA didn't get slammed like they did up here. THe natural snow trails melted almost completely but the man made stuff is holding up so I have hope for PA.

Planning a trip to JFBB on 1/8... 58 degrees?

"The accident was the worst of its kind in Switzerland since December 1999, when strong winds caused a tree to topple onto a gondola car, killing two people and injuring three." Its not just about the lift being able to run in a wide open area. If you remember back to that test they did in Colorado 2-3 years ago where they tried to see how far a chair could go before failing, they ran it backwards with no brakes, overloaded it, set the wheelhouse on fire. But the only thing that knocked it off the tower was a tree falling on the wire.

I make it my personal crusade to stop people from doing that if I get the chance. 99% of the people doing it have no idea what they are doing wrong so yelling doesn't work they're just like what? huh? who do you mean they can't see me? and 1% has the "I bought the ticket to I'll do whatever I want" attitude. If its a kid go to their parents and tell them someone just almost killed their kid, it will get them out of there. Its one time you are not even exaggerating, if I come over a jump at 30-40 and hit a kid in a blindspot. he's getting killed no doubt.

Wunderground is a scam. They don't have any weather stations of their own they just reformat NOAA forecasts take a look. Thu W winds 10 to 15 kt...becoming S. Seas 2 to 4 ft... subsiding to 1 to 2 ft. Anyway - when they say 20-25 they don't mean the wind WILL BE between 20 and 25. It means it will be windier than a day when it says 10-15 and windier than a day that is 5-10. There are periods on a 20-25 day when it is 5, and there are periods when it is 35. If it said gusts in the 40s, then a large number of gusts are in the 40s, some are much bigger. There is a reason when we go out and race on a 20-25 day, and a gust comes along sometimes some boats flip, and sometimes EVERY boat flips. They are not the same. There is more variation and unpredictability in wind than there is in snowpack. You guys reading wind numbers off of online forecasts is like some non-skiing sailor reading the snow depth charts on weather.com and trying to tell us what the surface condition of the day will be. It just sounds rediculous. Unless you are there with a $200 anemometer don't try to monday morning quarterback the wind speeds.

Planning a trip to JFBB on 1/8... 58 degrees?
method9455 replied to deboarder's topic in Jack Frost & Big Boulder
yea it will be fine, spring like conditions are the best thing ever for park, and just wax and you will be fine free riding as well. JFBB's base is insane they are going to last till late april this won't even pause them. all that rain last week didn't do a thing to them either and they just got a bunch of snow over NYE. heat doesn't do much to snow really, rain does a bit more damage but it shouldn't be bad this week. Realize the heat can only touch the surface of the snow and the 5 feet underneith are cooling it down the whole time so its a battle but at night it freezes again and you start over the next day so in the end not much is lost. -
That is true but football helmets are designed such that they are GOING to get hit, often, at relatively low speeds. Shock protection is their #1 priority. Ski helmets are designed for huge impact loads to catastrophically fail. They may or may not ever get hit, and if they do get hit hard enough to be necessary they are probably going to have to be thrown out afterwards. There are two layers of foam in a ski helmet, the white stuff can only be compressed once and then it is done, that is for big hits. The black liner helps a bit but its not a huge deal. I do think they reduce them some though just by distributing the load a bit. I wish we had air bladders in these I get head aches all the time when I fall. I am just scared by the mouth guard bars people have, I can't imagine falling on your face, doesn't it torque your head back and snap your neck?

Never ever trust the weather.com/accuweather or anything forecasts for your decision to go. If you have a season pass, go no matter what the weather when you have time, I had great days in pouring rain because no one is there and the snow is soft and grippy. If you are buying a ticket and the forecast looks maybe good maybe bad, go, it is always good. Especially at JF. Snow breads snow, the man made stuff lowers the temperature. The elevation lowers temperature. THe shade lowers temperature. Something about JF lowers temperature (maybe the river) more than most places. If it is rain elsewhere it is snow at JF. Just go, I have that philosophy, I use it to decide on marginal days skiing probably 6 or 7 times a year, so far at least twice this year, and one of them ended up being my best day of the year. THere has never ever been a day where I said, damn I shouldn't have come today.

Well there is a big jump between Freedom and Boulder or even Love. Jack Frost is the next step up from Freedom, the 2nd jump at JF is a 10 footer with a 3 foot step down, it requires a good amount of speed going in but if you case it, it is not a disaster, and if you clear the knuckle it is a real deal landing. papa - haven't been there in 3 days? so I don't know. I'm resting my legs before my trip next week 5 days of riding long days is going to burn me so I stopped going on wednesday.

Nice shots, can't wait to get out there.

I poach at JF often when it is closed, but be wary. 1) It is always much more difficult than an open trail. Usually they are ungroomed, with snowmaking whales and usually natural snow. If it is the woods there are rocks, branches, stumps, debris. You WILL hit stuff and it WILL trash your gear. I have multiple deep scratched on my base from this year. Also if you catch a stump or a rock it can pull your edge out like a zipper, seen it happen, it will total your board. They are unpredictable. Be prepared to lose the board/ski as a cost of going into woods down here our base is never deep enough to avoid it. That said, I'm glad to trash the board I use in the woods the runs are the best I have gotten in PA and I'm using a park board i got for $50, so trash it I will. 2) If you get hurt what is normally a small injury could be fatal. In my town (Parsippany High School), we had a kid killed at Shawnee mountain circa 2002. He was skiing during our ski club on a wednesday night, went down a closed trail (Lower Tomahawk) and fell into the woods. Not sure why, could have been ice, no one knows. He landed in the woods and did not die on impact but was very injuried. Ski patrol searched the mountain all night after they realized he was missing when they got back to the bus at 8. They checked all open trails, the woods around open trails. Then they started checking closed trails and beside them, they found him the next morning but that point he had died. Had he been on an open trail he would have been found hours earlier. Never go alone, he did it alone and there was no one to notice he was missing until the roll call at hte bus, and also no one who knew where he was. 3) If you do decide to go in, and you do have a partner, still be wary of the stuff there. Last week I hit Floyds at JF before it open after the NYE snowstorm, it was great, but at the bottom there where a bunch of guns setup. We had enough speed to ride past but we stopped and unstrapped and walked out so we didn't take our edges over the hoses. If you cut a hose or a power line, either you are screwed from the pressure/electricity, or the next time the snowmakers fire up the hose will blow out. It might injure someone, and it will certaintly make a mess and cost them time and money. Be wary of their gear. 4) Never ever go down a trail they are working on, cats can and have killed people. Snowmaking machines are less dangerous but there might be snowmobiles flying around and same danger with the hoses, but now if you cut one it will be pressured and will hurt you. Helmets are good for impact/laceration but they don't do too much for concussions. I still recommend them, they are cheap. I wear mine, it usually doesn't do much for me. But it saved my ass one time, I was in the park standing near the edge not doing anything. A skier went over a jump to spin and his binding released, the ski helicopters across and hit me in the back of the head when I wasn't looking. It dented the helmet, but I was fine not even a headache. I can't imagine what that would have done to my skull. So don't say "I never fall" that ski could have killed me no matter how good/bad I am at snowboarding. Wrist guards are more debatable, I do recommend them for noobies though until they learn how to fall. I'd probably rather hurt my wrist than break my arm, but personal preference.

Better to be safe than sued. http://www.unionleader.com/article.aspx?he...bb-a20094b465e9 How much money do you think Mount Sunapee will have to pay after that one. If Camelback ever decided to change their lift policy and something happened they would be screwed. Can we stop beating this dead horse yet? We got it, Camelback closes lifts when it gets windy. That is not going to change, no amount of you guys ripping is going to change it. You know why? Because you are not going to go there anyway. The lift got closed for 3-4 hours on a night when few where there and conditions where not safe to run it in. If some one's life depending on them being able to run it, they surely could have run it. But is it worth having a problem on a night like that? What if a wind gust comes and it goes from being 50 mph to 70mph and a chair does bang into a tower? What if it does bounce randomly and hurt someone? Is it worth it? No it is not. Running it on a night when it is 70mph wind isn't going to get anyone to go there. You aren't going to come in here and post something like "Hey I saw the weather last night at Camelback was really windy and they ran the lifts, sweet I'm so going tomorrow because of that." It just isn't going to happen. It effects few people, for a small amount of time, and would you WANT to ride the lift up in 40 mile and hour wind? Have you ever even stood in 40 mile an hour wind? I can't imagine riding in it. You guys are just bitching for the sake of bitching about Camelback, it was kind of funny for a year there, but by year 3 it is lame and childish. Lets talk about things that could change and actually have an impact on people. If I am complaining about Blue's slow trail roll out - it effects my decision to go and buy a lift ticket to the mountain, or even a season pass there. You complaining about a lift closure that didn't affect you at all is ridiculous. I was legitimately deterred from going to Blue a few days this year because the trails that are good were not open at the time. Camelback being conservative about running their lifts in high wind doesn't make me not go there. I don't like when they close it for lack of crowds but that is a different story because it would effect me randomly when I got there with no warning. If you see a forecast of wind over 35 don't go to Camelback, period. And as a sailor, I'm saying you guys don't understand wind's power. Go try and stand in legit 40mph wind and tell me you could ski in it. 25 mph wind is when it starts whistling in your ears. By 35 you have trouble walking. http://www.howtoons.com/toon/the-beaufort-scale/ That cartoon shows that no, it wasn't 70mph at Camelback that day. If it was, the "country side would be devastated". But 35 is realistic and it is difficult to imagine wanting to ride in that. And sure the lift COULD be run in a high wind speed, but a factor of safety is always comforting. Do you really want to risk getting knocked out of a chairlift and killed in order to ride Nile Mile? The lift doesn't have to fail for you to fall out. Honestly its ridiculous.

Sounds good, I'll try it next time. If I convince my girlfriend she wants to do it then we'll probably spend a whole morning there. If not I'll do a run or two and spend the rest of the day just riding. But she loves to bomb trails so why not for time?
-
I agree snowboarders are such douche bags. They always sit in the middle of the trail with their new fangled strap in bindings, and they push around all our great Pennsylvania powder. We should follow Taos and ban their ass forever .....
-
I would agree with 10-15 and 15-20, but not 25 on the last. The first jump on Boulder is 25 in my book and its definately a bit bigger. I dunno, I liked them both I must have caught it on a good day, I just didn't like only getting 4 hits on a run when the lift is that slow. What do you guys think about moving that picnic table from the plaza to freedom and the down rail from love to the plaza? I could see that being a good improvement if they went for it.
-
That would be well and good if you could get speed for them or they shot you up. I waxed my board the night before and was bombing them straight a 2 foot jump hardly intimidates me and you couldn't get any air off the 1st one if you hit the rail before, and the 2nd one any air at all would shoot you past the landing, and same for the 3rd you couldn't clear it no matter how well you hit the second jump unless you skipped the 2nd jump all together. They need work.

Thanks. I have seen Nastar before at Belleayre and Camelback but I don't know how it works. Do you just show up? Do you have to join an association? How much time does it consume (i.e. can I do a few runs a day but spend the rest of the day cruising around?) I'm going to stick with my stuff for a bit but ultimately I am sure I will get a racing board. I doubt I will need hard boots/plates for a while, my boots are already the stiffest softshell boot you can buy on the stiffest binding you can buy, I haven't found a trail yet where they are underpowered. But a racing board intrigues me and I might be able to get one off Ebay and tune it at my shop. * I joined Nastar online so I guess I just need to bring my number once I go to one of these. Looks like I can do Belleayre without having to buy lift tickets, nothing at JFBB, or I could do Blue or Camelback but I'd have to buy a ticket. Ironically I stopped skiing 6 years ago because I was bored and figured it was either park on a snowboard or racing on skis. Well turns out after 6 years of snowboarding I like going fast more than I like park. So now I'm thinking about getting into racing on a snowboard. I already have a setup that is as close as you can get to plate bindings without actualy having plate bindings, I'm just not sure where to start. Does Nastar cover snowboarders? Do they do that around here, I only go monday-friday generally so I never see anyone but high school ski teams practicing. Are there any boardercross events? I have season passes to JFBB and Belleayre, I see lots of racers at Belleayre but all skiers. I generally do Belleayre Sat/Sun. I'd go to Camelback or Blue too. I'm looking to just try it a few times before I start buying gear or coaching or getting in a program, I just kind of want to enter a few events and see how I stack up you know?

Just a troll ... move on. People can argue that Sno hasn't caught up with the parks elsewhere, or they need better lifts/lights/food whatever. But no one in their right mind can say it isn't a huge improvement over what was going on before. Sno is now at the level of the other mountains we talk about a lot Blue/Camelback/JFBB/Bear Creek, and certainly better than Shawnee, where before it was the worst of them all.* * I mean management/snowmaking/park not terrain it definitely has always had better terrain than Bear or Shawnee or Boulder.
