What Could Sno Do DIFFERENT To Make It A Better Ski Area?
Glenn replied to trackbiker's topic in Montage Mountain
Move to the continental divide and add 3000 feet of vert of steeps, cliffs and pillow lines. If I was in PA I'd be super stoked to be at an empty mountain with good snow. I don't know how the park is this year but I had alot of fun in their last year. I certainly don't kill it, but it had well setup features in a variety of difficulty levels, a handful of decent jumps, and a pretty sweet looking pipe. I guess if they could put a hooters in the lodge that would make things a litte nicer. -
It's the biggest they are making pipe cutting machines right now. Most superpipes have 18' walls since this year is the first the 22' machines have been made available for purchase (I think).

I've got a 3 year old 156 Jeenyus rental in not great shape I'd be willing to trade. 7 edge cracks, a horribly cracked topsheet and a seperating edge on one side. Don't let the size fool you, it's a super flexy board. Interested in trading? I'd be willing to throw some cash your way as well. If you are interested I'll post pics of the damage. I'm still riding it, so the damage isn't THAT bad. I'd just like something new to beat up.

I don't know Dan. I know a huge number of people who won't go outside of the park for more than 1 or 2 runs a day unless we got 5+ inches of snow the night before. There is also a signficant portion on our mountain that won't go outside of the park ever. They just work the in-runs on pow days till they are fast enough to clear the knuckle and then hit the powder landings. We have plenty of good terrain outside of the park, but park rats are park rats, and thats not a bad thing. Those guys throw down way harder than I ever do inside the park. I think in places like JH where there virtually is no park, the scene is tiny. At the resorts where the parks are decent (RCR looked pretty freakin sweat in the park) the scene develops. RCR had to offer refunds to all the people who didn't want to ride there anymore because they wouldn't have any jumps. Method, lay off the crack eh?

The mountain hosts at WP are huge Gapers. Usually widely exaggerated expected snowfalls, talking about how great the mediocre conditions are, falling, ruining the lift line snaking and otherwise making things harder for those of us on the hill everyday. I'm sure for the folks coming here from Amarillo Texas they are a life saver.

If you have good edges and sturdy legs Whiteface is an outrageously good mountain. Have fun!

I wish my mountain had wrist band style park passes.

With editing a western resort would make a way better subject. Per hour of film, even just following 1 patroller per day, I'm sure they will get the footage they want much faster/quicker at Blue. Although, it seems CB has record setting days for flight for life calls, so they may have missed the mark on drama.

Hope this counts as racer/coach stoke. I'm neither. Hope your feeling better Dante!

It says the album is private and wants your password.

Eh? I'm a snowboarder, and I dodge the bump trails as much as possible. But if I'm going to punish my body like that, I want to be on the steepest harshest and narrowest bump trail I can get on. In the grand scheme of things, WL isn't that steep. For PA sure, but New England areas have more serious pitches they let bump up, and western resorts clown on that pitch with bumps. Just sayin.

No action shots? Any one else have problems seeing the rest of album besides the one picture linked? Cool scenics though, looks like some good snow.

Good times for sure. If we get some good snow I'll give you a call. It sounds like Matt was stoked on the terrain, we just need the snow to make it happen. Next soft day we have I think I'm going to hit that big 4 step pillow line in the mushroom patch.

On a destination trip I would say thats true. I would say the vast majority of Pocono Resorts get their business from people who day trip it. Lodging is negligable, and access has alot more to do with location of the customers (big cities) than airport distance and bus/train availability. Food may be a factor, but if you spend the day at the resort and leave in time for dinner you can eat anywhere along your way home. Point taken on doubling tickets sales though.

This makes alot of sense. I don't think many (any?) of us had considered the tax aspect of it all. I also figured their business plan called for profits in 5 years, which means they would need to start turning around attendence in 2 1/2 or so. I personally don't care about high speed lifts. I like mountains that don't have them, because it means you aren't lossing the race if you ride the slower lifts. But... when Joe Schmoe who skis 5 times or less a year is trying to pick out a mountain to take his family to he looks at the trail map. The number of trails and high speed lifts becomes a huge deciding factor for him. So really it's not a matter of what I want, or even what most people on this website want. It's really about the people who rarely ski, bring their whole family, rent gear, eat at the lodges, etc etc etc want.

Rhetorical question... Are you at all concerned about the long term success of Sno? Rather than 15 new rail/jump features and a new 22' foot halfpipe most of us would like to believe 45 new rail/jump features would bring in way more people. I think most people here would love to get in a 22' pipe, especially in the poconos (well I'd rather hit one in the front range, but you get the idea). The point is... high speed lifts bring people to mountains as do rails and jumps. You've said over and over than people aren't at Sno, which basically means people aren't buying tickets. The things that will get people to buy tickets they have ignored until people will buy tickets, in favor of something only a few will enjoy. No hate, it's just for a brand new mountain, that needs to make money, spending like a drunken Doug on things that likely won't make money seems a bit odd. You know this already but it's not that hardcore skiers/riders that make the mountains money, especially in the Scranton area where no one skis.

Interesting. Being GM I would assume Rich made alot of the day to day operating decisions. We'll see how things change.

Good riding with you today Nick. I wish the conditions were a little better, but you seemed stoked on what we rode, which is really what it's all about. Thanks for snapping that pic too, came out pretty well. Dave didn't believe the snow was bad because it was all blowing up in that picture. I'll get out and ride, but I don't know how hard. I messed up my knee dropping onto a flat landing with hardpack. If the snow is soft and the knee is feeling better I'll be down for dropping some stuff. If not I'll just cruise with you guys wherever. Parsen bowl is not sick. It is cool to get up there though at least once. We do have the highest 6-pack in North America, doncha know.

Sunday Feb 17th at Blue _ who is going to be there?
Glenn replied to Papasteeze's topic in Blue Mountain
Me either -
Do they do any bump training at that age or any with the race team? Obviously you're never going to have a mogul field in the middle of a SL but bumps certainly teach you a new/different level of control over your gear Just curious.

... Still waiting on a 1 foot 24hr snowfall in WP. It's cold and dry, and we get good snow regularly, but not a lot at a time. I've had less than 10 real powder days here, and two of them were at other mountains. I understand thats more than you've had in PA, but not by a lot. If I were in Utah, or the PNW it would be a very different story.
