  1. Hmm, is it a bit warm in here?
  2. ... so you didn't want us to take a cheese grater to the base of your skis? We are SOOOOO sorry.
  3. Well... I don't tune my park board at all (maybe a coat of wax every once in a while, and if there is a really big gouge, some ptex). My freeride board I try to keep fresh wax on every 3-5 times on the hill, and edges touched about the same. My park board gets beat up, and spending alot of time getting the base nice isn't worth it, and I want dull edges for rails. Racers take MUCH better care of their skis, waxing and sharpening every time on the hill. So I guess depending on the riding he/you do, yes tuning is a good idea. Most people, self included, on this board believe in tuning your own gear. I've heard good things about the CB repair people so if you aren't the dyi type, this is a safe bet. If you want more info on tuning your own gear there is a pinned thread in the gear forum, and plenty of people who will be happy to give some help/advice.

Everything in colored is upstate, according to everyone who lives in NYC, and apparently wikipedia as well?!?
  5. What waterproof rating are aiming for? Also, when you post the stuff you don't like, can you post one or two pics that are more your style, even if they are from other years.
  6. You lived in Jackson hole and couldn't find someone who knew their way around?
  7. It's my understanding that the various people working for CB on a part time basis get a A voucher each time they work. This is their only way to get recreate at CB. So if they want to go and bring a friend they have to work 2 days. I think they would do what blue mountain does, and give at free season passes, but (and I don't know if blue mountain does this) if they quit, the pass would be revoked. CB obviously doesn't scan passes, so they have to rely on the voucher system. For some reason I want to say the full-time positions get season pass perks, and some other goodies (either free or drastically reduced passes for anyone in the family). The tech position sounds more like full-time perks, for a part time job. Even if mountains are cutting back on perks, is the cost to CB so great that they can't give their employees a real "freebie" on saturdays? Does it cost them any money at all to service the few employees who are visiting as guests that day? Just seems extra stingy to me. If I wanted the job though, it wouldn't be the deal breaker.
  8. I hate traveling with a group of cars. Honestly, I care about my safety far more than I do about avoiding a speed ticket. If I can stay away from other drivers I will, even if that means moving faster or slower than the groups of cars that are traveling the highway with me. Sometimes you just can't avoid traffic, but when you are rolling down a highway in a group of 10 cars with nothing ahead or behind those cars whats the point? People traveling together (ie family friends) but split in separate cars is another situation, although I still prefer to say, I'll meet you guys at destination X and let the chips fall where they may when we get on the road. That being said I set cruise to 8 mph over the limit. Any time I am driving above that I use the gas pedal, because I feel I'm more alert to both the changing road/traffic conditions and potential cruiser hideout spots.
  9. Yeah I see what you mean about the trail maps. The wall was the steepest thing open when I was at windham, but it's so short and I still don't think it's as steep as some of the stuff at belleayre. Nothing on the (skiers) right peak was open, but that stuff really didn't look too steep either.
  10. I've been to all 3 but none mid-season. Belleayre is my favorite, hunter is the largest, and windham is the middle ground between hunter and belleayre, but not as steep as either (on the trails that were open anyways). Belleayre is in the middle of no-where, but a closer drive from the poconos, and you have to drive past hunter to get to windham. I've heard hunter had some really sick terrain, but it was always from skiers, so perhaps they were all referring to the bumps. Thats about all I've got.

I would agree with you in 90+% of sports. We can only hope.

It was supposedly to be a harmless ribbing. If taken otherwise, I apologize. I think it goes without saying that the recognition will seldom be turned down. Hopefully the non-fiction work is done for the sake of the statement that work makes. Thats the whole point. Thank you. I always enjoy our conversations and I'm sure I get 10x's as much out of hearing you're perspective as you do from mine. And sorry things aren't as you would have liked.

I was kidding about the rusty medal of course. My goal is to make art with my body and my snowboard (keeping in mind I'm a long way from my goal), this is why freeriding and freestyle mean alot more to me than racing. Although, racing turns can be a thing of beauty too. I don't consider snowboarding a pure sport because of this, and competing at art is silly. I strive to be the best I can be, although others have a factor in that. I have no clue what motivates others.
  15. You mean those aren't champange bubbles in the tub?

I guess. You mentioned X-Games, I don't think that gets the respect of the peers. You mentioned Olympics which at least on the freestyle level doesn't get the respect of peers. Like I said I don't know anyone who races on a snowboard. I had no clue there were PGS academies in Europe. I was under the impression that snowboarding really wasn't that fashionable even today in Europe and it is much more a fringe sport there. As such I have no clue how the respect gets spread in those realms, but I would assume that FIS (or an equivalent) and the Olympics would clearly be the picks for showing who is at the top of the sport. That being said, I think I'd fair much better showing some bitties a video of my spinning a huge back country booter in HIGH DEF rather than pulling out some rusty 'ol medal, regardless of discipline. Though I'm sure both equally well.

Well, I don't know any racers from the snowboard side of things do you? The only one I ever knew was that chick who threw a method over the final jump of the Olympics and lost the race. Not exactly fame and glory. I suppose there is only 1 freestyle event, but again, thats the one most people (as I see it) are interested in (that ride anyways). Even at that, I'd rather turn off the Olympics and watch a freestyle video than watch people try and put together a spotless run in a pipe. I don't know anyone who races snowboards, and those who do are far from the norm. So I just don't see that there is fame or glory to be had on a snowboard unless you are throwing tricks. And if you really want the fame and glory you are making films. If you are doing comps it's most likely for the money.
  18. You know, I was looking at that map. Even with the HSQ, the current north face trails will still be secluded and accesible only through the current slow lift. So you can get some good long runs, but if you want to spend your day alone on the steep trails, you can do that as well. Who knows if the market is there, but Sno is definately on track to be the sickest mountain BY FAR in PA. I wish it were a little closer to me :-/

I'm not going to say Danny Kass isn't an asshole. But my impression that most snowboarders have alot more in common with Kass than White. Sure they may not be arrogant pricks about it ala Kass. Especially in that competitions are about money. You want to show your skills you show them with film. You would have to be crazy to consider Kass or White on the same plane of skill as Jeremy Jones, and I don't know of anytime Jones has participated in a major competition (although I'm sure someone will point something out). You want fame, prestige, and the coveted "Greatest Snowboarder" tag, at least in reference to freestyle. You show what you can do on film. DH pointed out before that comps show consitancy, but for every White there are 15 boarders who won some competitions and no one knows who they are. Why? Because in the end no one really cares. The ESPN crowd feels they have some pulse on the freestyle community by having the X-Games. In reality they attract fringe athletes who are there to make money or living, not those who are the best (who also make livings through sponsorships rather than competition earnings).
  20. And maybe some whispered narration.
  21. If there was an environmentalist group that was filming the destruction of trees at Sno mountain, but weren't supposed to be there... this is what the video would look like. I especially like the "MY MOVIE 1" title.
  22. Sounds like you know what you are doing. Why not just spend the money and get an edge tool to do it yourself?

I'm going with DH on this one as well. Shawn White is the exception to the rule, and I've heard him get shit talked many times for basically not being like the other snowboarders. Personally, I don't even like his approach to the sport either, but he is incredibly talented. Olympics I would say is more about the glory, but X-Games is definitely way more about the money.
  24. Elk is magical, they don't have ice during thaw refreeze cycles? If so I'm relocating TODAY. I drove through that mess for 2+ hours getting to elk on valentines day. I know the make up of the snow, and honestly the powder was fine, and well worth the drive considering how much fun the tree riding was. The ice I came across was from the original snow pack in the bumps. You don't drive a golf do you?
