  2. I could be wrong, but I think all the claims have been in reference to the radius of the cut, though not specifically notated as such. Check the size of the mountains cutters for reference.
  3. Pipes are a different story. You have a pipe cutter that has a specific sized radius. A pipe can't be bigger or smaller than the radius of the cutter.
  4. 84-87 is my plan but if there is a better way I'm all ears. I don't drive near as fast as Jeff, so I'm not going to make highway miles as important. It takes me about 3 hours as it is to get.
  5. I didn't think there was much debate on rub on wax. It stays on for about a run and doesn't do a whole lot of good. New gear is gonna be on the dry side of things and as Jeff mentioned if you really want to have your gear prime you will probably wax several times before you hit the snow. If you wax every time you ride, then waxing before you ever hit snow makes sense. If you wax a few times a season, it's probably over kill to wax new gear more than once. Shops will simply tune the edges and wax. If they are doing anything more on a brand new board, they probably should be shot.
  6. I'm not sure exactly where you are at, and the best route to take, but I would think popping on 84 and heading east would be the easiest. Either way, Milford is where I pick up 84.
  7. I'm in Stroudsburg, so if you wanted to car pool probably the best move would be to meet at Millford and go from there. Alternatively you could drive to Stroudsburg, but I'm gonna guess thats not what you want to to do.

  9. The way things were explained to me (whether right or not) was that you're junior license is good so long as the local laws allow it. I believe Jersey has a higher age (or did) than PA for driving. So... when I first got my license I couldn't drive in Jersey for 6 months. Since that was the closest state, I wasn't really concerned with any traveling elsewhere I was basically "stuck in the state."

  13. You guys should setup the J rail as a street style down, and jusj bypass that curve all together.
  14. I rode my brothers 168 (I think thats what it is) and he has this aggressive free riding stance setup. So riding normal (for the board, switch for me) was fine, but it was a bear to get that thing to turn when I was riding switch (for the board, this was a goofy stance which I'm used to). Basically it required more work, and I certainly wouldn't want to get myself in any hairy situations. It still felt better than riding a rental setup though... if that means anything. Which is basically how I came up with my conclusion earlier, get the biggest board she is going to be comfortable riding (most likely any rec. board where she falls into the weight bracket). I didn't fall into the weight range for that board, and it took combined effort of a huge board, and a weird stance for it to get sketchy. Unless she is riding a lot of park, there is no reason to be on an undersized board.
  15. She falls into the weight range for the vista, and she's bound to grow. I'd take that route. For snowboards weight is a bigger factor than height, unless of course she can't comfortably fit into the stance width provided, but I don't think that will be an issue. Of course if you can demo her on some different boards you will have a better idea, but I would shoot for the largest board she feels comfortable on. It's been my impression that both womens boards and youth equipment "babies" the riders and really makes it hard to pick a bad board, unless you want a ton of performance.

    Got some boots today. The employee helping "eyeballed" my foot size. She was a 1/2 size too big. At first I was miffed, but it's the fit of the boot rather than the number on the tag that matters. When I got back, I checked against my previous pair and they were the same, so it all worked in the end. BTW
  17. ... a lot of people don't respect Jake Burton anymore because of things like that. There maybe be room, but I'm guessing not. I can't tell you which side will dominate the scene. Anyways, thats why I said if anything kills freestyle....
  18. So go snowboarding on the 11th or go to an amazing show in Philly which I already agreed to going with a couple friends? They already hate me for never hanging out in the winter.

    I'm not, but I understand what a motif is, I do understand basic design concepts, which apply to subjects I am a little more familiar and capable in (such as web page design). Although what you may have been getting at is that a motif exists. Which is the direction boots seem to be headed.

    The motif of the snowboard boot is a urban argyle design, whereas the ski boot has a cowboy boot motif. They share somewhat similar shape templates though.
  21. You're right, and if anything kills the freestyle movement it will be stuff like this IMO of course. The sex pistols would never have come from an after school program.
  22. If competition was the focus of the sport I would agree. The focus of improvement and more importantly focus on style really isn't to do well in competitions. The end goal is video parts. It's not a pure sport, treating it as if it were is probably not the best thing in the world. The swag things comes into play when... you can use day X to either go to a competition where you take two runs and win something (or nothing if the prizes aren't that great) or spend the day filming or working out new tricks. The sport can survive without the competitions, the competitions can't survive without the swag... make sense? I totally understand where you are coming from, and I agree. Teaching kids to go after that , at the same time, understand the competition isn't the be all end all in modern freestyle riding, as it is in say racing, or even mogul/aerial. I'm not sure what the reference to skydiving really was meant to say show. I think at least snowboarding parallels skateboarding much more though. The scene is really about kids finding spots to ride, and filming. Tony hawk is the huge name is skateboarding, but the heart of the sport is in spots and videos. Another analogy.... Freestyle is the garage band compared to the school orchestra. The idea isn't to get really proficient at the instrument and meet some prior standard of musical excellence (although some garage band musicians will work hard and become proficient, it isn't necessary). Garage bands are more about finding gigs to play, making a few bucks, and if you're lucky finding some groupies. I did both in high school, and they served two totally different purposes. I think as a parent if you are really looking at freestyle as a structured sport to help the work ethic and development of your child you're looking in the wrong place (ie the pure sport). On the other hand, if you as a parent view the freestyle scene as a place were a kid can have some fun, show off some talent and maybe experience some cool stuff (winning prizes, getting movie parts, sponsors) then you will be alright. All that not to say racing can't be a blast or that there aren't freestyler's who work really hard and are disciplined. Then again... I'm not a parent or ever plan to be. I could be way off base with what is appropriate for kids.
  23. For me at least, a competition absolutely would need some decent prizes to show up. Freestyle riding is about style... poetry in motion if you will. I could care less how I stack up against the next guy, competition has little or nothing to do with what freetyle riding means to me. Videos are what you strive towards, not the top of a ranked list like in racing. I'm sure others feel differently, but I thought I'd put my two cents in on the subject.
  24. With gear available she may go more often. Also with the seasonal rental stuff if she grows out of the equipment I think shops will typically trade up to the next size for free during the season (if I'm wrong someone please correct me). Also, if she is growing at all right now, she may have to replace her gear if she grows for next year. A seasonal rental may give you better performance gear than used stuff for $200. It's at least worth looking into.
