    Getting into skiiing

I'm thinking about the switch mainly because of the backcountry and touring aspect. As much as I love snowboarding I'll have to admit that it is a very inefficient way to get around in the snow, hence the skiing thought. And for the second point, I'll still get better at snowboarding, just throw in some 2 stick action on boring tuesday afternoons.
  2. Ok, so most of you know that I'm a snowboarder (and those who didn't now do). I've been on the snow now for over a decade and I truly love every second of it. This year though, I'm considering trying to learn how to ski. Its not that I'll never board, but the Poconos do get a little monotonous after a while and I figured I should learn a new skill. The thing I'm wondering is how to step into it. I don't really want to go out and buy a pair of skis right now. A good pair is going to cost a ton of money and I know for a fact that I'm not ready for a good pair yet. Also I don't want to waste money on an entry level ski that I will never use again after the next year or so. To me the idea of renting came up, but then I remembered some of the times I've rented snowboards in the past, when I broke my board a few years ago and snagged a rental to finish out the day with It was a challenge to ride and I knew what I was doing. I can only imagine how a terrible pair of skis would work for a terrible skier like myself. Does anyone have any input? Suck it up and buy some skis? Rent a pair for the season? Stick to the shred stick?
  3. Stoke-tastic! All we've got here is rain rain and more rain. On the upside I guess there are a lot of little creeks that might be floatable for the hardcore kayakers, but since I'm not one of them I pretty much just want this to turn to snow.
  4. I am so jealous. We were talking about hitting it up for a run or two, but no one had their gear and it was a football day anyway. Hate to report though, but I'm down to just a sweatshirt and it's pretty hot in state college today. Everything except the few snowmen in the fields has completely melted.
  5. I just pulled out a 2 pairs of my Thorlos that i'll have to wear tonight and tomorrow at the homecoming parade and football game respectively.
  6. Just got a call from a friend who goes to the U. Sno mountain is completely blanketed white.

    Those Nike boots.

Other than seeing the occasional ad for the nike gear, I've never personally seen it on a mountain. Thats where 99 percent of snowsport advertising happens anyway. If stuff is worth using you'll see people using it, if its not then you'll see nike 6.0 or whatever it is ads during the x-games and that'll be it.
  8. Any kind of relatively thin non cotton material will work. You don't really have to be too picky about socks as long as you stay away from cotton.
  9. Where are all these stickers coming from? I haven't had any since the initial batch a few years ago. The only one left that I know of is on my old helmet.
  10. The Sno Cove website won't load either.
  11. Anybody gone and done this yet? I would have thought more of the park rats here would have been going and posting TRs or something.
  12. I don't understand why Warren Miller would ever sign away his company. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. It's definitely cool that he decided to narrate another film though. Whether or not it was a good idea or legal, for the fans its good to have a legend back in the game.
  13. Any date in November is a good day and as long as the temps allow it, I'm sure we'll get at least a hike park by the end of November at Boulder at the very least.
  14. R2 is probably just busy kayaking his 10 miles a day now. He'll be back when its time to dress like an astronaut again.
  15. I'd go for the VT thing. You can still go on Tuesdays and I think thats when they had some good specials last year (collegee thing I think) so you can still get a good deal and not have to worry about a season pass.
  16. Remind me to never take a drink nick offers from one of his bottles...
  17. I'm going to have to spend a lot more time at Frost this year.
  18. Stoke levels rising!!!!!!

    Wide board

I'm in a pair of the Salomon boots, the F20s I believe, they definitley make your foot narrower which is cool, and they are not nearly as long as other boots but for my size 13 foot I am still on a wide board with them. Definitely the most comfortable boots I've ever had too. As for boards I'm on an all mountian Salomon Patrol right now and am loving it. An inch of setback with the tail just a hair wider than nose. I don't know all the specs of it off the top of my head but it is definitely a very light, thin and responsive board that I'm loving right now.
  20. I"m not a huge REI fan. Idk why. its either because I like to think of gear shops as small, kind of smelly places with awesome dudes hanging around, or because I have an ex who worked at one. I think its a combo of the two. haha
  21. Sick that they still have enough snow to ski the entire boulder trail!
  22. Great TR. Really makes me jealous. That looks like a great time up there.
  23. Too bad you guys didn't end up going on Saturday. I was there just before dusk, might have run into you guys.
  24. How skiable do you guys think Tuck's will be in the first week of May?
  25. I'm going to hold off on buying snow gear for a while. My next spending spree next week will be hiking/camping gear.
