When I used to live back east, we rented from that place just before you get to The Loft, don't remember what it was called. Normally it was brand new equipment for the seasonal rentals which then went into their normal rental pool the following season after we returned it. Don't remember the name of the place, otherwise I'd try and see if they are still open.

When they used to be open here on Thanksgiving, we'd ski in the AM and make dinner when we got home. Not sure where your issue is, GSS.

Well, I think we can sum it all up as....it only takes an instant for your life to go wrong. One nanosecond, one slight misstep. I've found this out the hard way over the years. Some things are the results of what you've done over an extended period, but other things it's just some blip that either you or something else set off. I don't want to get into assigning the cause of this guy's death, but I do feel for those he left behind.

One of the benefits of seasonal rentals over buying and trading is that you can get the right size boot for the kid at the beginning instead of sticking them in boots that are too big to allow for growth. And the rental program I used allowed me to get a different pair of boots mid-season because the first pair hurt - when they are young it's hard to determine the fit well until they start using them. Same with ski lengths. Start small and get longer as they get better or grow.

Definitely do seasonal. FAR less hassle. Also, at his age, if you get a season pass, you can sometimes get a free seasonal pass for him as well. That definitely removes some hassle. I started my daughter at 3 and the whole process needs to be as EASY as possible.

Bad sign, NZ. The first year my husband didn't buy a pass was the beginning of the end. There were two odd years in the 20 since then that he did buy passes, but got injured on BOTH opening days. Now he hasn't been out in years because of the fact that there has to be a "first" day.

Siblet and I were there for 10 days, skied Deer Valley, Park City, The Canyons, Snowbird, Alta. Never rented a car, used buses to get around. That had some sort of cost, but I believe it was cheaper than a rental car and ended the parking problem.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Jackson didn't win...yet. However, in all fairness, you named a SPECIFIC area when you named Jackson, rather than a WHOLE STATE when you said Utah. I'm sure if it was individual ski areas or even canyons in Utah, the results would have been more widely dispersed.

And mine started skiing when she was three. I'd ski in the AM and the hubby would come with her in the PM (because he wanted to sleep late, not because I was refusing to let him go.) The fact that he was less interested in skiing than I was actually worked out.

Speaking as someone who lives in the woods, has a well, and loses power all the time... All you need to flush is water in the tank. We stockpile water bottles under the sink so that we can refill the tank when the pump from the well fails. Now, I don't think this is an issue if you have city water and you are down hill from the reservoir. Because during Floyd we had no drinkable water and no electricity for quite some time, but I don't remember issues about flushing. Certainly it won't be an issue for quite some time. Even we get about two or three flushes per toilet during blackouts and we are relying totally on water in our pipes to make that flush happen. City people will still be getting water from the city pipes for far longer.

For those wishing to know more about Turner, here is a recent article. Maybe Atomic can rent it for the day.

The only reason I knew about it was that coaches from there were at one of Siblet's summer race camps.

And, apparently, we are on the Australian radar as an "up and coming" (sheesh, the place has been here since the 40's....) resort.

Turner is even FURTHER for him than Whitefish. If he's not up to driving up here, then what makes you think he'll want to drive an extra 1.5 hours or more? Lost Trail is way closer, but still not an "out and back" in the same day. I think if the parents are in charge, he'll be sticking to Bridger/Moonlight/Big Sky. That is way more than enough to keep him busy, believe me.

At the rate you're going you're gonna be 10 years older when you do.

Than Utah? Yes. But, remember we are considerably north of Big Sky. And we get less sun, so the snow stays nice way beyond what would happen down at Big Sky. Bridger's "cold smoke" is so light it's blown off by the end of the day. Ours is just heavy enough to stay put, but light enough to ski through easily. You'll find nice stashes in the trees days and days after the storm. Check the videos here.

But, you can see plenty of what is here in my "Local's Guide". Just remember it's NOT a casual trip up here from Big Sky. It'll be a day of driving up and another back. Unlike Discovery, there IS a nightlife in Whitefish. I know because I have a 24 year old living with me. Bridger Bowl has some well-regarded stuff opened up for the shovel and beacon crowd, but much of their terrain has the same issue as Camelback: starts out steep then a relatively flat run to the base area. Plus, most of the lifts are slow as can be. Same with Montana Snowbowl in Missoula, at least in regard to the lifts. They have some incredibly gnarly stuff, but there is little "run out". You'd need a local guide there (Snowbowl) to find the good stuff, I think. You might want to look at Moonlight as long as you'll be down at Big Sky anyway. Big Sky is HUGE, in and of itself. It is also pricey compared to anything else in Montana. It feels very "Deer Valley" to me. But, they have a huge breadth of terrain there to keep anyone happy. Just be prepared for base damage. They have these damn rocks that work their way up through the snow and are really hard on your skis, even on nicely-groomed runs. They are sort of famous for that. I had to spend $85 on base repair after my last visit and since the lift tickets are really expensive (even with my "in state" discount) I was pretty torked about it.

We had a lot of FOG about then. Most of my notes are talking about visibility. Time to hit the trees!!! We also had snow, but apparently it was of the heavy variety. But, it was snow. There is discussion of losing 4.5 pounds from the time I got up to when I got home. Must have been WORK. By the 20th, things were actually IMPROVING (in fact on the 21st, I have it noted as a day to remember), as opposed to shortly before that (must been then that you were here.) Later in the season there are multiple notes about it being the "best day" of my ski life and trying to decide if each one was better than the other "best" one. Check the forecasts for Feb-Mar going forward, our temps are supposed to start dropping.
