  1. I'm following Siblet's SPOT tracks as she goes across a ridge to get to some snow: In the pic below, you can see the ridge in the distance (this a pic from yesterday): Update: She's started down, crossing diagonally from that notch from left to right. I hope there's lots of pictures!!! I think the notch must have stopped them for some reason.
  2. They are just "regulars" here. Between the daughter and myself, we cover a lot of "skier categories". Siblet skis with a lot of "cliff jumper types", the ski patrol, the other alpine coaches, etc. I ski a lot, so know people who ski a lot. After all, we talk to each other on chairs here. The film was shot all over Montana, but much of it was here.
  3. Well, it obviously WAS able to be profitable for at least 30 or so. I just think the down economy has impacted vacation home purchases, recreation, etc. and it didn't have the cash flow to weather the economic downturn. You know, Camelback years ago was in the same boat, that's why the Village at Camelback was sold off early in its days to someone else and the Camelback-linked real estate today is actually Northridge. They had to sell off the Village to cover their bills.
  4. Scan of ancient (1975) ski map showing where it is: A 1982 ski brochure from Pa said it was 415'. A weekend day ticket for an adult that year was $11.
  5. I've skied there like 30 years or more ago.
  6. Well, I am sure there are places you can do both in the same day other than here.
  7. Who says the jobs out there are lower-paying? Or that late season is BS skiing? Certainly not this year in Rockies. We closed with a record base that got deeper and deeper. There is still snow half way down the mountain even now and the altitude here is nowhere near as high as Colorado.
  8. Well, a full time job in CO, still gives him maybe a week vacay plus 6 x 4 x 2 weekends minimum ski time, say 54 days...of COLORADO skiing? C'mon, you can't count days at Blue in the same breath as days in Colorado.
  9. Yeah, Jeff, there is such a thing as day-tripping to ski. You might even be able to go in with others on a shared condo so you don't have to drag your gear up each time.
  10. http://www.epicski.com/forum/thread/104000/so-you-like-computers-and-wanna-be-a-ski-bum-job-within Early warning here.
  11. Untrue. You just have to know where they are.
  12. It looks like they are carving mountain bike trails into the hill here:
  13. Yeah, about a month back I was sort of looking forward to the end of the season...but it had gotten boring. Would have liked to have gone back to early March even more than that, tho.
  14. I'd rather get there by night time. I HATE driving at night. Too many critters jumping in the road.
  15. Well, even buying in advance, it would have been $500-600 to fly (don't know why, it's been as low as $268 in the past, I was stunned). Then, I'd have to rent a car when I got there. We were meeting with a lawyer and nothing was firm in advance (IT NEVER IS WHEN I GO THERE), so driving was the only "flexible dates" option. I think I did this four times last year. Now that I live out west, I've become the queen of serious drives, although I am not (alone) capable of more than nine hours. I never stop for lunch, just to pee and pump gas. With Siblet, I can do longer drives, but NOT clear to Denver in one day, I'd be a cripple from sitting for 17 hours or so.
  16. Just drove to Denver and back. Never saw any $4 gas...well, I did get Premium the whole way (was trying to find stuff without ethanol when possible). I paid as little as 3.67, up to 3.97 for Premium. Also discovered that I get much better mileage out of Shell (28, one tank), Sinclair (5 tanks worth, averaged 25 MPG) and in the past, Chevron (trip to Oregon coast showed 3 MPG more than Texaco). Sucking big time: Conoco and Cenex (23 MPG). I was driving at 78 MPH for over 1000 miles each way, aside from construction slow downs, no appreciable driving pattern difference tank to tank.
  17. An article in my local paper said it was next to a large rock, which they may have thought would protect them. But the avalanche was very deep, 15-25 feet, and the rock wasn't 25 feet high.
  18. They found the bodies. MSNBC
  19. Picture of search They are presumed dead.
  20. Not sure how many of you have been following this story: Jackson Skiers missing
  21. My comment was directed at toast, not you. I talked about the landing and he was saying it was a windlip (no duh, I knew what the TAKEOFF was), which doesn't translate necessarily into windpack underneath, could be anything.
  22. ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL, there is no question. However, little kids are subject to their parents' interest in transporting them. I am sure a good number of these kids will NOT move on to bigger and better teams. For one thing, truth be told, there is not a lot to choose from in the Poconos to begin with. If all these kids were going to join teams in New England or the Rockies, it would be different. They are going to be dispersed, if they are "lucky", among the other teams of PARA. Can't speak to the program at Bear Creek at ALL in terms of its quality, but the other teams/coaches are not necessarily BETTER just because the mountain they are on is bigger. The fact is, many good skiers, not just Lindsey Vonn, came out of Buck Hill, demonstrating a consistent quality program.
  23. I don't think Buck Hill is much of a ski area, either, but it has consistently produced fantastic racers. I don't know a thing about the ski team at Bear Creek. I can say that 30 years ago I skied BC when it was Doe and that's about it. But, the area itself does not define the race team.
  24. I wasn't referring to the departure point, only the landing point. You can have cornices where the landing is fluff because they are on the lee of the ridge.
