  1. Even aside from the tire issue, if those are "studs" then I'm Moses.
  2. It's a winter wonderland today. Glad I got my studs on the car last week.
  3. Whoa. We've got snow predictions like crazy here, but nothing that high. Of course, the actual results of what we GET are usually below the predictions, so I'd halve their total. We were supposed to get 4 to 8 at the house (point forecast) on Tuesday, but I think it was more like two. Then the next day we were supposed to get the same, I think we got 4. The mountain at least is claiming a nice base, 30 inches at the summit, 15 inches on the back side base, 99% due to real snow, not snowmaking, because we don't have much snow making here. Considering they won't open for another three weeks and we're supposed to get (up there) 27 inches between now and the end of Saturday, we're looking pretty good. That's followed by single digit days, so it's not going to all melt off.

    SAD

My family claims I have this. I have two seasons: ski season and migraine season. I am almost totally non-functional in July.
  5. They probably didn't pay SKI mag enough OR Elk had the surveys out to be filled out by people and they didn't.
  6. Actually, the areas are all in the northwest part of the country and exclude California, Colorado, and Utah. Which get a lot of snow.
  7. Normally, I use Tony Crocker's site for this, but here's another list.
  8. I guess free lodging makes the extra miles make sense. Enjoy. If you do come, I think it might be (depending on route and weather) about 4.5 hours from Sandpoint to Whitefish. The normal route might be sort of "fun" in a snow storm. I'd skip it if it's snowing out.
  9. Oops, just thought of a third Epic guy, from Idaho. Spent so much time with him I forgot I met him on Epic.
  10. Well, at this time of year she's horseback riding and doing shows. I think she was still a ski patroller somewhere last winter.
  11. I've guided/skied with two Epic members and one PASR member so far. Can't remember their states. And had a visit from skimom, but that was in summer.
  12. According to my StreetAtlas program, there's no "keep driving" to get here. It's closer to where he's going to be than Schweitzer is. He'll pass the exit as he goes to Schweitzer. That's why I don't understand the interest.
  13. Another panoramic from Inspo, looking into North Bowl area East Rim view Glory Hole below Radio Tower Peak:
  14. We do have more tree skiing than bowl skiing. There is Ptarmigan Bowl for more subdued bowl skiing, and then the "bowl" of East Bowl is treed. And Hellroaring Basin is not for the timid skier unless you stick to Hellfire. Most of the open areas there end up in tighter trees towards the bottom. Aerial of Hellroaring Basin: Picture Chutes can be seen sort of in the middle, Gray's Golf Course is the area without cliffs on the left, Glory Hole is more in the distance on the right. Rotating panoramic taken sort of over Hellroaring Basin and summit
  15. Found a lot of "extreme" pics on this page: http://www.glacierlife.com/?cat=9 You have to scroll down a bit.
  16. I've been trying to get aerial shots of Hellroaring Basin and the back side, but haven't found them yet. Found this: Above is somewhere in Hellroaring Basin, presumably Picture Chutes with excellent snow cover.
  17. Well, after studying owls all summer again in Oregon and being attacked by one and spending every night out in the middle of a forest all alone, she's back for the next 12 months saving money to learn some other career. Currently working part time as an office manager for an OT here in town. I have no idea how much time she'll have to ski recreationally, but I don't think she'll be racing this winter like she did last winter due to the job in town. We'll see. She did race last winter.
  18. Well, CONTACT THEM. They've got a link to do that and in fact have been on Epic responding to changes there.
  19. Siblet is going to be a race coach at the mountain this year. I'm so happy for her. (She's got another job, too, for the winter but this one is "cooler" in my opinion.)
  20. I have to ask...why would you put Schweitzer before my ski area? Schweitzer's 80 miles further, the vertical drop has us beat by 80 feet, but we have more acreage and the summit is higher by 400 feet so our snow stays better. We both have fog and snowghosts. So, why did you pick Schweitzer? Schweitzer: Whitefish:
  21. You are making a HUGE assumption about the reliability of those maps. Maps like that for our house show markedly different altitudes from measurements taken both with an altimeter and three different GPS units. Over 100 feet off. Those maps don't take into account minor bumps on a ridge very well, for instance. They only look at the "big picture". I also notice that NONE of the PA mountains are "verified". See other sections of the country for the check marks next to the listing.
  22. Italy?
  23. Whitefish stoke
  24. Great link. We've been looking for this info for the stats tables, right? Can the admins import this info somehow just in case this site goes away? In the meantime can there be a link on the stats page for the use of those who don't use an altimeter?
