  1. I don't know. I watched some people with wide rockered skis try and get back to the chair via the groomers (can't be done without hitting the groomers) and they were all over the place. I think maybe some Mantras you'd like. Siblet LOVES her Auras. But, I think the heavy stuff is tough if you sink to a level you can't counteract with speed or gravity.
  2. How wide are those PE's?
  3. ? What if you were sick? I'm not telling you to pretend you're sick, but if you haven't missed much school and your grades are good, then 4 days is nothing. Just have your parents write a letter that they are taking you out. We certainly did this with two different schools systems for Siblet and I know my parents did it for me for THREE WEEKS one October when I was a junior in high school.

    Edge Angles

Depends on the ski. For most everything, since it's the Rockies and ice is rarely an issue, I have 1 and 1. For my "spring" skis, I have 1 and 2 and a wet structure on the base. The sharper your edge (2 or 3), the more it will need sharpening, that's why I leave it at 1 since I don't have ice to contend with.
  7. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around -25. Wind chill values as low as -49. Northwest wind between 17 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Monday: Partly sunny and cold, with a high near -12. Wind chill values as low as -50. Northwest wind around 18 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around -28. Wind chill values as low as -44. North northwest wind between 7 and 10 mph. And our power was out for 4 hours today. Thank goodness we have radiant floor heat and have been keeping a fire going in the fireplace.
  8. More bitter cold a'comin.... Tonight: Patchy blowing snow and a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around -20. Wind chill values as low as -49. Windy, with a north northeast wind between 29 and 31 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. Sunday: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy and cold, with a high near -16. Wind chill values as low as -49. Blustery, with a northeast wind between 17 and 23 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Sunday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a steady temperature around -22. Wind chill values as low as -50. Northeast wind around 17 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Monday: Partly sunny and cold, with a high near -15. Wind chill values as low as -50. Northeast wind around 17 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. HMMM. I planned to ski starting Monday. I wonder if the mountain will still be closed????
  9. Nine degrees here and dropping.... Meanwhile, according to the NOAA, on the mountain: This Afternoon: Areas of blowing snow and a chance of snow. Cloudy and cold, with a steady temperature around -12. Wind chill values as low as -41. Blustery, with a north northeast wind around 25 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible. Then the snow report: 9:30 Update: We will be closed for operations today. We have done everything we can to open today and unfortunately it will not happen. 50 mph gusts and 40 below windchills have ripped the summit. Efforts in the village have also been hampered by heavy snow and wind. Check in the morning for updates on Sundays terrain. The weather outside is frightful. We ask that you be careful if you are in the village today. High winds have been knocking trees down and blowing snow has cut visibility way down.
  10. Wow, yeah, I see you have 13 days and 147,000 feet. If you died tomorrow, I am sure I can beat THAT. That would be assuming I wasn't allowed to start until February and you died 12/12. I am sure I won't CATCH you this year, assuming both of us survive the season.... I'm allowed to start off easy in a few days.
  11. Well, I always start out slow and build up. I think it's skiing that gets you ready to ski. You just don't want me on the vert list.....
  12. I would say most of these "top" resorts in gaper mags are the places that are more "Disney World" than real town. There are few of us left. And I give thanks that we just about never make a top ten list.
  13. Well, they couldn't open here. We used to open on Thanksgiving, but with new ownership, they pushed the date back over a week last year and the expected opening day this year was Dec. 6. That did NOT happen. They opened this past Tuesday with TWO trails, one green, one blue. However we have started to get snow. Of course, I haven't been cleared to ski yet. I go to the Physical Therapist (actually I go to the facility 3 to 4 times a week, but I don't always have a session with the PT) today and I've asked that he do tests to clear me for skiing. I am the ONLY one so far who thinks I might be able to do it. The surgeon said February, my husband says take the season off, and the OTHER PT (the guy's partner) says I'm not "going to get out of (there) that easy". I know I may find that they are all correct, but I'd like to give it a shot. But if my PT gives me any kind of clearance, my goal is Monday.
  14. It really sounds like maybe there is LITTLE TO NO structure or they are not brushing after waxing. If it's the latter, a run down the mountain usually cures that except in wet conditions. If you've never asked them to structure your board, I can guarantee they haven't done it. After a while any factory structure is worn down either due to use or to heat from the waxing iron. I ski about sixty days a year and get my structure done once a year. YMMV.
  15. I forget, how much is the forum discount? I plowed through a lot of posts and couldn't find it (probably an operator problem, but maybe it's time to repost it anyway).
  16. The crowds alone are enough to make the horrendous lift ticket price not worth it. You'll say to yourself, "I PAID for this crap?"

    Camera Help

I just keep mine in my fanny pack and a spare battery in an inside pocket. The camera has a protective case, so putting it in my pocket would be a bit too bulky. It's a Canon Elph.
  18. Seasonal Locker $199 (increase of $45 or so which Siblet funded) Season Pass $535 New Recons, purchased end of last season $429? New bindings, purchased end of last season from store going out of business, $100 Total so far: $1253, not counting Siblet's pass (last year we are paying for it! She's on her own once she graduates. $435 for college pass.)
  19. God, terrain parks are taking over! Glad I moved. Next they'll be putting hits on Nile Mile...
  20. Equipment was probably in the minority, compared with airline tickets and lodging. Out here we have big states, so races in Bozeman were "local". And Bozeman is six hours from here.
  21. All I know is that there has been ONE MONTH this year so far without snow on the mountains -- July.
  22. My daughter started racing at CB years ago before we moved to MT. Which mountain will he be training on? She raced the first year on just any old skis. HOWEVER, if he likes this sport, be prepared to spend MUCHO bucks as he gets older. The older ones will travel more and more to regional races. You have to factor in at least a pair of skis for GS and another for SL every other year, plus helmets, speed suits, lodging, race fees, etc. Hold onto your seat now. The first year my daughter raced FIS races (international racing org), even though they were just regional, I figured that the total cost was $10,000. The following years I just stopped counting. And she wasn't even one of the top racers, just good enough to pass the FIS quotas. But, her skiing is top notch now that she's a senior in college and retired from racing (can't really study if you spend most of spring semester on the road). Compare this first picture to the second. There's nothing like racing to help a kid learn to ski. She is now into "side country" skiing with powder skis and the transition has been easy for her. Her reaction time and balance are the common assets to the two types of skiing.
  23. Because the natural snow is like slush compared to the powder of the west. I've been on Pocono Raceway one time in a foot of fresh powder. (I have NO IDEA how they allowed that to happen.) It was far better than usual, but still really tough to ski in.
  24. For NBC olympics coverage, vote for alpine skiing so we don't have two weeks of ICE SKATING!!!! http://www.nbcolympics.com/vancouver2010/index.html
