  1. Seems to me it's so hard to even find a place that rents tele equipment that it would be worth giving up a day to try it all out conveniently located. Too bad they're not offering lessons, too.

Can I have a link to where you saw this. I'm googling around and not finding any info other than the cousin (NOT BODE) shot the cop. As near as I can tell, Bode wasn't there and the only part he played to do with the cop was contesting a ticket the cop gave him once. Here's the most thorough write up I found: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html...mp;pagewanted=1

Actually, I thought it was a pretty funny remark.
  4. I think some resorts use a summit that is not lift-serviced to determine their "vertical". I am pretty sure that they used to do that here, count the summit with the cell phone tower, which you have to hike up to. I notice in recent years we lost three hundred feet....

What ARE you talking about? I made no comment whatsoever about Bode himself, only that the US ski team wants four event skiers like Bode. I also cannot imagine why my daughter should tell her boss (??? what boss?) to fuck off. And she is "grown up". WHAT ARE YOU ON? Ski, I thought he was talking about Siblet, he was quoting ME, not you. Of course, maybe since the person's name started with "s" he thought he was responding to one of your quotes, which would make more sense to me since I never thought he had issues with me.

It's different out here. Sure colleges concentrate on tech races, but in the West, where we can hold speed events, the kids MUST run a speed event to qualify for JO's. If you don't run a speed event all season, you are automatically NOT considered for JO's as the goal is to build more Bodes, i.e., four event skiers.
  7. What's it like? Hell on earth. Get there for first chair, leave at 10 AM. Ski the Cleo lift as needed.
  8. Definitely worth it, no more watering eyes when you go fast or it's cold out. Also protects your eyes from gapers doing the Pocono Tuck.
  9. Well, La Nina is being good to us, finally. Even though they were barely able to open the resort "on time" on Dec. 8 (past years the goal was turkey day), we've had the snowiest December in the last 10 years so far. Siblet has been doing the off piste waist deep stuff and I hope there will still be some for me when I'm ready. It's the light fluffy Utah kind of snow. Too bad there are so many people enjoying it. I get to ski tomorrow, but then it's off to Washington State School of Veterinary Medicine for one of my pooches. He's in bad shape and it's a seven hour drive each way, but we've got to see if we can save him, so once again no skiing.
  10. As a bystander here, is what you are saying that Sno closed as well and only CB got taken to task for that?
  11. Best wishes on her racing career, ski! Seems fitting that as Siblet is ending, Ty is starting. We need a young racer to watch.

    White pants

I guess it depends on how you feel about looking dirty all the time. Or if you expect to wear them more than twice.
  13. That sounds low to me. Just read an article on our mountain here and they were saying 260,00 last season. Now here, if we get 7000 people in a day, we're bitching about the 10 minute lines and I remember someone at CB saying 10,000 to 12,000 on a weekend day was common. If we forget Xmas is "all weekend", and multiply 10,000 times 28 days, you get 280,000. So, you've just come close to that 300,000 leaving out all the midweek skiing, all the President's Day, all the Christmas, all the MLK. If we throw those in, assuming 200 midweek per day or 1000 for M-F, we add 14,000, plus 50,000 for Xmas, plus another 20,000 for the holiday weekends. That's 364,000 and that's really conservative. I bet there's a ski industry database somewhere that has this info? Edit: Just found this quote, dated 2005: "Camelback recorded 350,000 visits last year while Camelbeach logged 300,000." And another one: "Camelback’s idyllic location, along with a keen attention to detail, is a main reason why the resort attracts on average 350,000 skier visits each year." Last was in this article: http://www.snoweastmagazine.com/articles/G...a/Camelback.pdf
  14. Highly unlikely. 1) I am still recovering from my accident. I do not have full use of my left hand and wrist and I still have pain. 2) The mountain hasn't even opened yet and so far there is NO SNOW. My goal is 1 million and I think that is iffy. I know I will be slowing down a bit due to fear, for instance. I consider it a "healing" year. Tonight's web cam:
  15. Two: Avocet watch and the Brunton thing you wear around your neck. Both about the same price. You can change your own battery on the Brunton. It is supposedly "more accurate" than the Avocet, but frankly, I'd calibrate it the first few days to figure out how much it is usually off. I think it's called the Summit or something like that. They make a lot of altimeters. I've had THREE Avocets. One was great, one was kind of great the first two years, the third was miserable from day one. I am currently using the Brunton Summit.
  16. Be sure to look at the cost of lift tickets and lodging and not just at airfares when determining cost. It might cost more for the airfare, but if the lift tickets are $84 a day, you can eat up the difference in air fare pretty quickly. There is no way I would pick Europe over Colorado or Utah, because we all know the SKIING is better in the US, although the ambiance is usually better in Europe. Slopeside lodging here: http://www.bigmtn.com/index.php?a=lodging/...arch&loc=ME and here: http://www.bigmtn.com/index.php?a=lodging/...arch&loc=TH and some here: http://www.whitefishvacation.com/pub/index.php?id=2
  17. Hey, Chris Becker, how do you ski at Killington and only accumulate 18 vertical feet? Were you just climbing to the lift and skiing back to the edge of the snow 9 times? Two feet per run? Vertical feet, for the uninitiated, is the amount of feet from the top of the lift (or the place you then hiked up to) to the bottom of the lift (or your car if you go straight home after one run). Doesn't matter the LENGTH of the run, all that matters is the DROP. Contact your resort for lift stats or wear an altimeter.
  18. Vail is pushing back its opening day. Better keep checking their site. Colorado, like us, is starving for some snow and they have bigger rocks than we have here.
  19. I'd think anyone with WHITE pants would want to GIVE them away! They'll be anything but white within a week.

    Brad

Anyone know if Brad is still at the Loft in Tannersville?
  21. Down in Glory Hole here, they sometimes run the groomers between the trees and it is great fun picking your way through a different route each time.
  22. Probably not. We don't open until 12/8. That's a change in policy from prior years, but since they are replacing two chairs and realigning another, I can see why they are snipping off a few non-profitable weeks from things to allow themselves more time. As it is, we haven't had the normal amount of snow yet that we've had in past years by this point. Just a dusting last night, whereas in previous years we've had a foot in October. They haven't even started making snow yet, it's been so warm. However, the forecast is now improving noticeably and I think they'll start this week.
  23. Well, Siblet now does all her friends skis because the fact that the team traveled together all of the time and sometimes they had a "regional tuning tech" at the races with them, she learned a lot. I actually don't like her to do mine, but she sneaks it in occasionally.
  24. Could you be a bit more specific? Does this refer to the seasonal tuneup or Mark somehow?
  25. Mark is terrific, I really miss having him around for my skis...on the other hand, $125 is a lot of money if what you mostly get done is a wax and an edge touch up each week. You don't want to stone grind constantly or you won't have any skis left, plus you have to restart the wax impregnation again and you want your bases to be loaded up deep down with wax. I think if you get them waxed each night and not just once a week, you might break even compared to doing it yourself. If you need edge work done regularly, you will come out ahead as diamond stones are pricey. This is a SEASONAL tune up. That means, they'll keep tuning your gear for you all season long. Basically, you could treat them like a locker as well. Drop off your skis Sunday night, pick them up the next Saturday or whatever.
