They were definitely open for Thanksgiving one year when we had the place in the Village. I never skied there in November, but there were folks skiing that weekend.

Well, I got a few runs in yesterday so I can comment. Conditions at the mountain VISUALLY are terrific. We've been trapped in an inversion situation for about a week now, but on the mountain it is all sun and blue sky. I wanted to take pictures yesterday, but it turned out I left the data card from my camera back in the locker and didn't want to spend time getting it because I was just fitting in a few runs before work. The valleys in every direction had heavy looking white clouds in them and just the snowy mountain tops were poking through here and there. It was great. Anyway, not sure if there will be much more open when your friends come. The back of the mountain (North side) is fine, but the rest -- forget it. They'll get pretty bored if they have to spend a week just skiing the back. Even the back has trees poking up through the snow here and there. Plus, at least yesterday (a Sunday), lines were forming since it was the only lift open. We need snow.

I thought that the idea should only be compared with identical body shapes going on, but started to wonder about the turbulence issue. So basically it's because the midair body position is not as aerodynamic as it could be and not due to some turbulence difference as you get closer to the ground?
-
If you picture your skis going down the hill, they are cutting thru air even when they are on the ground. Basically, you are on an edge most of the time, anything not touching the course is by default passing through air. I guess conceivably each inch your body takes off the snow allows more air turbulence below your body to occur but aeronautics is not my strong suit.
-
I thought it was because if the skis are off the ground you have no way to turn and control your direction? I can't see from a physics reason why removing your skis from the ground three inches or more without a corresponding change in your body position would cause you to slow down. Theoretically, the drag coefficient would be less I would think. Unless you are telling me that the exposed edge of the ski drags more against air than snow?

I think we're about 100 miles south of Fernie. Never been up there. Everytime I think maybe the conditions will be better up there, I check their website and it doesn't sound like it.

They are now saying we open on Saturday.

This was advertised on another board. Small adult size: Spyder Olympic Speed Suit, Two Piece

It's a bit hard to say "usually" as this is just my third winter here. We get most of our snow, according to weather sites, in December and January. We are getting little bits of snow now every day, but the days have been warmer than freezing, so at least at 3700 feet where our house is, it's not accumulating much. The mountain started MAKING snow on the lower elevations a few weeks back and would normally open Thanksgiving Day. I've heard they may open a week early, but have seen no confirmation. How will it be on December 3? Who knows? It is unlikely to be 100% open, but the back side will be fantastic, as always. It (the back side) will be 100% open, I am sure. Everything depends on the weather. December 3rd is a bit early to expect much at ANY area, IMO. You should probably get them to purchase a five day pass for $175 as long as they get it before 12/3. Other than that, early season pricing is $39 a day. They could show up and display season passes from another area and possibly get more discounting, but I am not sure since the early season tickets are already at a reduced cost. Things look good so far.

Wasn't asking about hard snow. Was asking about typical Pocono conditions -- a sheet of ice.

GOLF?????? This is a joke, right? I admit if you don't ski, watching racers could be boring. But for a skier, watching the racers' technique, tactics, etc., is exciting for me. I have evolved over the years from preferring the downhill to preferring to watch slalom, maybe because for me, just trying to figure out where the course is in a forest of sticks is a major effort. (I can't even gatekeep slalom because I can't tell if the guy whacked the gate and went around or straddled it.)

The one listed on the left under my screenname.

Yes, I think that for those who go beyond the Poconos, even if just once a year, the CHEAPEST route is to get a midfat that can handle the conditions outside the Poconos, but also handle the Poconos. I mean OCCASIONALLY you do get fresh snow of some depth in the spring. Why not be ready for it instead of struggling? Phil, how are the Metrons on Pocono boilerplate that is all you have say at CB at 2 PM on a Saturday?

Well, the chair had people on it and people were skiing down on Saturday, but the mountain is not "open". There is talk of opening before opening day, but there's been nothing official yet. Frankly, I've been too busy to really worry about it yet. I can tell you the people skiing down were skiing mostly across grass and mud on the part I saw. The only reason I was up there was Siblet was home from college and managed to puncture the gas tank on the van driving up the mountain to talk to her coach. (One year minus a week ago she rolled the truck. She has decided to give up driving in November.)

First the ABS module needed to be replaced, then I needed to replace front and rear brakes and something called a serpentine belt, plus normal oil changes, tire swapping, something with the stupid airbag, etc. Every time I turn around it's something. Thank god I bought my ski pass last March -- it's the last time I had any spare money. At the rate I am repaying for all this stuff, it'll be two years before I catch up and that's assuming nothing else happens.

No, I didn't say that in the least. I can't figure out how you read that into it. I've never skied the 5 star.

I've had the predecessor to the Recons, the Axis XP's, for two seasons, about 2 million or so vertical feet. I live in the Rockies, so needed a wider ski to handle the powder that comes down on top of the groomers turning them into "not groomed" fairly quickly. I LOVE THEM. However, probably due to their shorter length (went from Rossi vipers in 184 to 167's in the XP's) I don't find them as fast as the Vipers. Nor are they a blue ice ski. They are TOPS for what I need out here -- powder, crud, fairly good in soft moguls -- the length being shorter makes me more confident that I can make it through loosely treed areas. (The skis will come around in time.) But I find it tough to keep up with adults who used to be racers. (Not your NASTAR types, but people who grew up on skis and spent many years racing USSA before they had kids.) I've used them in the NASTAR course a few times and qualified for Nationals, but since I am not really into NASTAR I don't know how well they would do for someone who is into that. Possibly if I had them in a longer length I would like them more at higher speeds. Anyway, I liked them enough that I went out and bought the "flat" version of the Recons on Ebay for $450 without demo'ing them. I know there have been some changes since I bought my skis and I am hoping that I still like the Recons as well as I liked the XP's.

Let's see, I just said I don't have TIME to hike because I need money and you are telling me to hike so I can ski? The lift ticket was paid for last March. Not sure how hiking in order to ski is gonna help me pay for $4000 of car repair bills in one year.
-
Emphasis on the word "regular". I haven't hiked in MONTHS. Too busy trying to cover car repair bills.....
-
and then there's Sibhusky, who doesn't do much of anything....
-
Why introduce a foreign substance like a plant to the ski? It then will have an inconsistent density in whatever section of the ski it is in. Or is this just paint?
-
Frankly, I'd think the sage brush would interfere with a consistent performance throughout the length of the ski. Basically, why not add dust to the base?
-
Alan Heicklen would probably win.

Warm, maybe, dry, no way. The outfit Siblet got when she was there she continued to wear HERE, in spite of the PASEF on it, because her BMRT stuff didn't keep her warm. HOWEVER, the stuff is like a sponge if you wear it in the rain.

Blue mountains ski shop SPLIT FROM Blue Updates

WAIT! I know! This happened to Atomic, right? It's probably like those people who pissed off the software support guy in Jurassic Park, so he decided to show them a thing or two. Maybe Atomic did his "I own a beemer and my dad has a private jet" thing to him. That HAD to be it.
