unless you want to ruin your skis, I would advise against venturing into the woods at montage. there was almost no cover in there. they need at least 12 inches to provide adequate coverage.

this is a great topic, especially if you want to ski well into your golden years. but also keep in mind that skiing technique also has an influence on the forces and stresses put on the knees. for me, I've taken the approach of limiting my widest ski to about 88 mm. for firmer days, I'd prefer to be on something sub-70mm...but at the moment my narrowest ski is 81 mm. full disclosure, I plan on acquiring cheater SL skis (approx. 67 to 70 mm waist) to use for firm days.

derp.....i really hate how crowded that mtn can get.

love the detail shot of the 170 rtm's. mine are fully rockered and are a blast....i need to demo the newer version to see what i think of the camber.

Epic sunny day with PA's finest gun powder skiing. Pulled into the lot and it was packed....I forgot about MLK weekend. Even still, trails weren't too crowded and lift lines were non-existent. Seems like most of the ppl were hanging around the lodge area. After last week's warm spell and r**n, today's offering was a pleasant surprise. Upper mtn was firm cord with a few bare patches here and there. Loads of frozen ice flows show just how much melt they had up here. Upper and lower fast track were open, as was the long haul lift. We hit that up a couple of times and then headed over to the north face. Mtn ops was nuking all the trails over there. Silky soft turns were found in abundance on each trail. Smoke probably had the best snow on it bc ppl were hitting up other offerings. In summary, epic conditions with sunshine....a rarity for PA. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

hero snow last nite! could have done w/o the crowds though.... so our nite went something like this. met with our racing clinic about 7 then headed over to paradise and NM/DW for a while to work on drills and other such non-sense that showed us how much we suck as skiing, lol. we had to be careful with all the jerrys out and about, but thankfully no one in our group got hit. jeff gave us a shout out as we were on NM/DW and he was on the lift....couldn't tell who else was riding up with him. we called it a nite at 9:30 and headed back to the main bar. just after we had a beer or two the rain started. we closed up shop around 11 and headed home. it was 60 degs when we arrived.....womp womp.

sunday funday at montage was a bright and cold one. we arrived at the lodge around 9 am, booted up, and headed to the upper mtn for some *much needed* warm-up runs. the added extra layers of clothing made me feel a bit like ralphie's little brother from "a Christmas story". it was good to see montage open wall-to-wall. snow was cold and fast. we headed down to the northface and white lightning was off the charts. big firm bumps, but no ice was to be found. lighting was an issue in the AM.....kinda reminded me of how snowbird skis in the AM. the afternoon was spent in the GS race course that was set. could have done with a bit warmer temps but at least there was no wind to speak of. overall fun times had by all...and no frost bite....so that's a plus, lol.

I go with the less wind. wind chill sucks....

I think jeff has a beer cozy for that

nice TR....we're heading up there at the end of this month. haven't been there in quite a few years, so we're looking forward to getting back to WF.
-
better add that extra layer!

about 1" in KOP....derp.

depends on which RTM you are talking about. RTM-78, sure. not the others. RTM-84/86's are dang stiff skis. all the RTM's have excellent edge grip and torsional stiffness.

there's nothing wrong with being a "terminal low intermediate" skier....especially if you are having fun and if that is all you aspire to achieve in your skiing. that said, learning more advanced skiing skillz will open up more opportunity to have fun on the mtn. just buying a new ski won't do that for anyone. btw, mogul skiing exposes bad habits and lousy technique....another great way to learn (or get all banged up, lol!)
-
*very* few and far between, lol.
-
...so you're saying there's a chance for skiing ungroomed pow at tru blue, lol.
-
only you can answer that question for certain for yourself. however, learning "proper" skiing technique and strategy is always a good thing, IMHO.
-
I dunno....since I haven't skied with you. best to take a lesson and see what the instructor has to say about your skill level and your gear set-up.
-
...or they would just groom it all into the base...
-
the rtm-84 is a pretty beefy ski...not for beginners.
