i'm a fan of look/rossi bindings. I have axial 120's and they work fine for wider boards.

elk's a "skier's mtn" so they won't really cater to park. they do have a park, but it is minimal at best.

truth. I suppose our southern climate doesn't help that much either. also, most of us live in a fairly urban setting (when compared to the north country)...so there are lots of choices for what to do during the winter months for those who do not ski. a lot of the PA hills are trying to market themselves as destination resorts (and charge accordingly) as opposed to local ski hill (except maybe places like eagle rock, spring mtn, etc.)....so I def wouldn't consider bear creek, jfbb, et al as local ski hill...even if those were in my back yard. JL I think hit it on the head (at least for me): community, it's all about community. so, maybe PASR is my "local ski hill"...lol.

I had a pogo stick.....but the cylinder spring on it was broken so it didn't work so well.....

for the purposes of this article, all of the places just mentioned would not be considered local ski hills b/c of size, number and types of lifts, and cost of lift tix. magic mtn was included in the article as an example b/c of the whole community-based efforts to keep the slopes open. the closest thing I can recall was at beech mtn lakes (just north of Hazleton). they had one lift and two trails, no snowmaking. we used to go sledding there when I was little. the mgmt closed up that hill before I hit high school.

so this month powder mag had a very interesting article about local ski hills; the how and why these little bumps are the future of the ski industry. the article focused on mt abenaki, nh and magic mtn, vt. as I was reading through the article I kept feeling that I somehow missed out on the whole "local ski hill" thing. maybe it's a PA thing, but when I grew up the in the pokes there were no local ski hills around (local ski hill meaning a rope tow, a few trails, dirt cheap lift tix). the only way I was able to get into skiing was through my high school ski club. while the ski club made it more affordable, skiing (for me) was expensive, especially when compared to the local ski hill that exists in "true ski country". also, skiing for me was at time (and still is) a special trip that happened only 6 times a season (obviously I get out more than that now)....but the idea of having a ski hill, just a couple miles down the road, someplace that's affordable so that one can spend many week nites skiing...that idea just sounds very compelling and inspiring to me. and I wonder how I would view the sport differently had I grown up with a local ski hill. thoughts?

I've seen a few kids in norristown riding those new scooters....didn't think much of it.

I have the zipfit worldcup liners and I love them....however, I have a very low volume foot with low arches. also, I had extra cork compound injected into the liners b/c there was still waay to much room for my feet. that said, zipfit does make a very thin liner (grand prix)....worth a shot. keep in mind that zipfits are not cheap, but they should last you several shells. if you stick with your current liner, def look into modifying it. also, do those sidas footbeds allow your feet to splay when you weight the foot? instep issues can also occur when the footbed keeps the arch in the "up" position all the time. a good footbed will provide support to the arch and allow the foot to splay when weighted. in the end, def take your boots to a good boot fitter and see what he/she has to offer.

that's quality, yo! -
i really do like spring snow....so much better than boiler plate ice.

nice TR and glad to see the coverage is still good. twister is a great trail, but i think i like echo a bit more...not as much skier traffic on it so you can really let it rip on echo.

friends of ours are season pass holders at sunday river and invited us up to their condo this past weekend. we had a good time overall and def are putting sunday river on the "must ski again" list. overall impression: "someday bigger" is an accurate, yet incomplete nickname for the river. yes, SR skis short (max vert off any one lift is approx 1600 ft), but it has loads of terrain (amount and varity). SR is very spread-out (8 peaks), but it doesn't feel like it, unlike killington. i think the trail and lift layouts help contribute to that feeling. we spent most of our time near the back of the resort on Aurora, Oz, and Jordan Bowl to avoid the crowds and to get to the most interesting terrain. Barker also had some good stuff as well, but it's near the middle of the resort (and the crowds). White Cap was nice as well, but not a lot of trails there. we chose the White Cap lodge as our base of operations since that parking lot is not too packed and very few people use that lodge....it was also closest to the condo. conditions: 3/29 was classic spring skiing. mid 40's, loads of sunshine, soft snow. SR has ridiculous coverage, so the trees were still very much in play. at the base of the mtn, there's a good 2 to 3 ft of snow everywhere....a lot more up on the mtn. my guess is that they will still have a good amount of snow on the mtn until july. 3/30 was a bust...3-4 inches of snow overnite with another 1/2 inch of rain/ice on top. very foggy/ cloudy, so it was poor visibility all day long. everything was crusty on top, but nice underneath. conditions improved once the crust was broken off. lodging: our friends condo was pretty nice, a one-bedroom place about 3 minutes down the access road from white cap lodge. travel: maine is a long ways away....and SR is way up there in western maine. gotta make sure to leave at the right time...it took us 10 hrs to get up there (yay friday afternoon rush hour) and 9 to get back (no traffic at all). gotta say, the free lodging really was the deal breaker to going up there. not sure if i would have considered it otherwise. anyhow, glad we went....had an awesome time.....def recommend it if you are up that way for other stuff, or if you like to drive a long, long time.
