  1. word, today was loads of fun; good snow & meeting another pasr. we arrived about 9:10am, and took our time booting up. met up with jfskidan and headed over to east mtn to see what was up. it was pretty chilly and cloudy, snow was very carvable and softened up a little bit towards the end of the day. elevator looked really crusty and glazed over in the morning. we didn't ski it until we met up with ridge racer. bumps on exhibition were crusty on top and rock hard underneath. trees were not skiable in the morning. flyods got better in the afternoon: nice and sloughy sugar hid the boilerplate base very nicely. we called it a day around 3pm....après in the e2000 lounge.
  2. they are both operated by buckmans. it was nice to have the marmot store there when i had to get my tamarack jacket sent in for repairs. didn't have to pay for shipping, they took care of everything.

well, they have been there for as long as i can remember.....i think the county was trying to push the development of montage mtn rd for a long time.....probably part of a improvement master plan.
  4. looks like they are getting more snow this week! i'm a slacker though, i didn't get around to doing my review of highlands. i do have pictures and i promise i'll post them!

    ya that blows....
  6. so i hit up bc early on sunday for their last day of the ski season. on the slopes by 8:40AM....mostly ski school instructors and ski patrol out there. coverage was descent, although the edges were looking a bit thin. i was really bummed that they erased the bumps on grizzly. i know they have a snow-moblie race on the 24th, but you think they could have waited until after skiing ended to groom out the bumps. anyhow, this season was def much better than last, but it wasn't great either....kinda average i suppose. thank you to everyone at bc for their hardwork and what not!

    Binding advice

alpina carries the FKS and rossi axial2 120's. i have the axial2 120's and i love them. i also am not a fan of marker bindings....but they were on all of the skis that i demo'd out in aspen. i was having major problems getting into the bindings, even though they were set to my usual DIN setting of 7. it got so bad that I told the tech my problem. i was surprised by their reaction that i hated the marker bindings. anyhow, they put the DIN to just under 7 and that seemed to do the trick. i skied some pretty gnarly stuff and loads of bump runs without any prereleases at the lower setting.
  8. dude was obviously a tool-belt....womp womp.
  9. day 4 - snowmass remix. blue bird day, goggle tans, and lots of soft snow. we had such an amazing time today, it's not even funny. we started the day by taking the elk camp gondola and then the elk camp quad up to the top of elk camp. did a warm-up lap down sandy park and then headed back up to do long shot. it's a bit of a hike to get up to long shot, which starts at the top of burnt mountain. it took us forever to make it down the 3.5 miles and 3400 ft vert on that trail, but it was sooo worth it. there was still some leftover powder from yesterday's storm in there. the rest was turned into nice soft powdery bumps. we were all spent by the time we made it down to the two creeks area. we took a little breather and grabbed a quick bite to eat at the two creeks cafe. it was back up the lift and we headed over to the alpine springs and high alpine lifts. we took green cabin down to the sheer bliss lift. our end goal was to get to the cirque. we decided to drop down the headwall and followed the gully out and back to the sheer bliss lift. holy cow, that was the run of the day for sure. the upper portion of the cirque is very nice and open and it wasn't very steep where we dropped in. it got real once we headed into the gully. everyone made it out just fine and we all felt like champs for skiing that stuff. we ended our day by heading back up the sheer bliss lift to get to the sneaky's and power line glades. by this time everyone was toasted, so we ducked out of the glades early and headed back to the upper mall to drop off our demo skis.
  10. if i can figure out how to post a picture...
  11. update in progress (i finally got my computer hooked up to the internet here) anyhow....so this is aspen, glam, glitz, and all that. so far we're enjoying it out here. here's a summary thus far. day 1 - arrivial. our flight from PHL was smooth and fast; we arrived an hour early. the other couple in our group also arrived early, but the final guy in our party was 1 1/2 hr delayed. that turned out to be a good thing b/c I-70 was backed up due to an accident. that stuff was all gone by the time we got the rental car, ate lunch, and picked up our friend. drive was smooth sailing. got in to aspen around 7-ish and did some quick food shopping. called it an early nite since we were all tired from the travel. day 2 - apsen mtn. that is one steep mtn! fresh groomers and soft bumps were on the menue for the day. played in some trees, tried out the bumps, it was all good. snow was in overall good condition, but there were def some wind-blown and scraped off areas. i took one run down walsh's...that had soft bumps up top, but the headwall was pretty darn steep. can't say that i skied i well, but i at least survived it. we did some fun trees off of gentlemen's ride and then headed back to the base to call it a day. day 3 - snowmass. powder! so i have to be honest, powder really threw me for a loop. we made our way up the big burn lift and it only took one run for us to realize that we def needed a lesson to ski the powder and crud. so, tinymoose, her friend, and i made our way back down to the base area to buy a lesson. we hooked up with the group and, wow, it totally helped! it was a half-day lesson and by the end of it the three of us had made vast improvements. we skiied a lot of terrain, but we hung out a lot under the high alpine and alpine springs lifts. i thought we were tired from yesterday's stuff at aspen, but today was another whole level of tireness. pictures to follow...
  12. have fun! we just got thru security & are having b-fast at au bon pain...
  13. 4 am came too soon, but that means that we're getting the car packed and we'll soon be on our way to CO!
  14. that's probably just the land value, lol....
  15. GSS, have you seen the youtube clip of the original harlem shakers? it's off the hook!
  16. i think jim morrison put it best....."this is the end"
  17. yeah, i saw the potential for some snow next week....but we're only doing 4 ski days. doesn't look like any deep pow days for us, but hopefully we'll get some refreshed surfaces out of it.
  18. so we got all our ski gear packed up, just some last minute laundry to do and then pack the rest of our clothes and stuff. stoke meter is on the rise!
  19. i am really enjoying these pics! looks like you guys are having a blast.
  20. awesome pics! hope you and ridge racer are having a blast out there!
  21. we saw quite a few ohio license plates there. HV could fit right in with the pocono mtns. yes, there was a good bit of natural snow there.
  22. last weekend we made the long trek west and north up to holiday valley in western NY. we left right after work on friday and drove up to state college where we met up with a college buddy of mine who still lives in state college. papa johns and belgian beers were the order of the nite. got on the road sat AM around 7:15-ish and made it up to HV around 10AM. parking lot was hopping, but we managed to score a relatively close spot to the holiday valley lodge. booted up at the car, got the lift tix and headed up the mtn. for those who are unfamilar with the mtn, HV has three peak areas and two valley areas.....a similar arrangement to sunday river (but on a much smaller scale of course). HV claims to have 750ft vert, but in reality it skis like 500ft off any given lift. even with the short vert, the resort spreads out nicely over 1,400 acres. most of the trails are narrow and windy, but there are a few very wide cruisers as well. while there were alot of people on the mtn, we never really felt like it was overcrowded there. yes, there were some lift lines at the more popular lifts (which accessed the easier terrian)....but we stuck to the less-frequented lifts that had the better (more interesting) stuff. HV has enough variety to keep someone occupied for a full day, maybe two....but not much more than that. temps were in the low 30's and got to the mid 30's by lunch time. the snow was hero all the way, but got scraped off as the day worn on. coverage in the trees was a bit thin. bumps were kind of soft, but the troughs were boiler plate. runs of the day inlcude: the wall - the steepest trail at HV. short and sweet. center was a bit wind-swept, but skier's left was the bomb. eagle/falcon/hoot owl/ raven - this pod of black trails had very few people on it and was sheltered from the wind, so the snow was pretty descent. falcon had some nice, soft bumps on it. eagle is a straight shot under the eagle quad lift; nice place to lay down some GSS rails happy glades - probably the most scenic place at HV. it's a grove of well spaced spruce trees, low-angle pitch but has a few nice little rollers to play with. this stand was gladed very nicely, unlike most of the other trees at HV. mountain coaster - we hit this up at the end of the day. cool for something different to do. $8 per ride. all in all, HV is a neat little place to visit, if you are in the area or have friends/family near by to visit.
  23. ditto....although it sucks when the bars don't have the foot rest....like ALL the lifts at k-mart
  24. i think it's gotta be a PA thing...or at least a non-northern ski area thing. i used to never put the bar down until we went to VT for the first time. i guess peeps don't think you need the bars if you're not that high up. and let's be honest, most lifts in PA aren't very high off the ground.
  25. i suppose personal responsibility is becoming less and less common these days...
