so yesterday i was hot waxing my skis and it seemed to me that i couldn't get the waxing iron to the right temp. i have the green wintersteiger waxing iron and i was using the yellow base prep wax from glide-on hydrocarbon wax (from slidewright), set the iron between 100 and 110 deg C (per slidewright recommendations). i noticed that the wax wouldn't melt easily. i use the drip-on method. i gradually increased the temp up until the wax easily melted and workable...approx. 140 deg C. the wax didn't smoke. this doesn't seem right to me. my question is this....does anyone else run into this situation where the working temp of the iron ends up being hotter than the wax manufacturer's recommended temp? if not, i wonder if the thermostat on the iron is faulty.

last nite was kind of an inpromtu trip up. mrs. guitar saw a food special at the trails end cafe that she really wanted...so we made our way up there, only to find out they sold out an hour before we got there. doh! anyhow, i got a pint of weyerbacher old heathen with my sandwich and then headed to the slope. slopes were uncrowded and the snow was nice and fast. coverage was generally good and appears to be getting better. my legend 94's did OK....held an edge on all but the most icey patches. got a couple of laps down timberline, which was skiing very nicely. they started making snow around 9PM or so and by the time we left (10:20-ish) the entire mtn was lit-up. temp at the base was 20 degs when we left....hopefully they were able to lay down a good blanket of man-made. sasquatch and extreme were still not open...def looking forward to getting some turns on those trails soon.

i've tried some of those bumps for boomers techniques...def helped me with visualizing the mogul field and coming up with a plan of attack. def still need tons of practice, lol....

mrs guitar and i did the nite shift today. got to the mtn around 5:10pm. lots of cars in the parking lot, but we got a pretty good spot up close to the lodge. got geared up and on the B-lift by 5:30. mostly lapped kodiak and grizzly and lower extreme since timberline and upper extreme were not yet open. there was some decent snow left over, just had to hunt for it a bit. it was nice to see the mtn with general snow coverage....if there was a bit more snow in the woods off F-lift I would have hit them up. man-made was ok at the beginning but really firmed up as the nite went on. had a decent bowl of clam chowder for dinner (way better than the cheese burger sliders i had at jack frost...) and then headed back out for more laps. we tried to meet up with an instructor friend of ours, but didn't work out. put the skis in the car and got coffee for the road home. it was party central in the lodge....mad limbo action going on. we didn't stay for the fireworks. overall, good way to spend new year's eve!

mrs guitar & I left SEPA ~ 7:40 AM & rolled into the parking lot around 9:20AM. we booted up at the car & then headed over to the lift tix desk; def a long line there. finally got on the snow around 10. did one lap down demattes and decided that was for the birds...way too crowded. we spent the rest of the afternoon playing around on challenge. groomed, bumps, trees...it was all good. it got even better around 2pm when the sun popped out for a while and softened things up a bit. we ended up skiing with two of mrs. guitar's friends from skidiva.com...fun times had by all. we demo'd some skis as well. mrs guitar tried the rossi temptation 82 in 152cm and I did the nordica hell & back in 178cm. she liked the extra length for speed and stability at speed. I thought he hell & back was really light-weight, but if you let it roll with the slope it was stable and held a good edge....a really fun ski.
