toast21602
woke up with at least 6 more inches of snow on the ground. it made for another great day. the snow was still so deep from the 15+ inches that we got yesterday, even with most of it being skied off. didnt take too many pictures today, so i'll show you a decent one of dan dropping off a nice size rock. i dont know what our plans are for tonight, maybe head into jackson, maybe not. who knows. forcast is calling for at least another foot over night into early tomorrow morning before lunch. one of the ski patrolers here rode up the gondola with us and told us to expect 12 by the morning opening, and we also heard to expect up to 20 inches by the time the storm is over. i just hope i dont get delayed coming home. stoke level right now is pretty damn high. this picture can be decieving, i should have zoomed out. the landing is still another 10 feet below where he is into fresh powder. by the way, it is puking snow on us right now as i look out the window. CaptDave
Saw a flight listing today, Philly to Jackson passing through Cincy, roundtrip 1/19 to 1/26 for under $300. So tempting... Edited January 10, 2008 by CaptDave
toast21602
you should probably do it.

So tempting... you should probably do it. I kept hearing, "it doesn't get any better than this", "epic" etc etc.. I am fairly convinced that I will never return to Jackson, because the liklihood that it will be as good as it is right now, is not likely when guessing at when to book another trip. Papasteeze
They got 3 feet saturday thru Tuesday!!!! Ha! Last January 07 sucked according to the locals it was too cold to snow for the latter 3 weeks of Jan. seriously doug... I think Jhole sucks with out fresh.. COMPARITIVELY to other destination resorts with out Fresh. Nips will not agree.. It's a combination of several categories of personal preferences that cause me to rate it like that. .........including a bus for 45 minutes in the morning and afternoon. I have way more vacation time so I'll get to see what all the fuss is about Utah later in the season.. Hopefully it will impress you, but you already have a preconcieved notion that JHole is the best, so I am fairly certain that you will report back that Utah does not and will never compare. Schif
45 minute drive to the mountain? That seems a little excessive. Aren't there any closer places that aren't necessarily slope side?

I find it hard to believe that anyone could go to snowbird and come away thinking it doesn't compare to somewhere like JH. Absolute vertical doesn't mean much once you are over 2-3k. You might like one more than the other but it's got to be comparable. That said, looking at Toast's pic's it's difficult to understand how you can come away from a trip to JH this week and not be very enthused. Papasteeze
looking at Toast's pic's it's difficult to understand how you can come away from a trip to JH this week and not be very enthused. Knowing that JH is just getting the absolutely best conditions right now tells me that it is very unlikely that no matter how many times I visited, that the chances of the conditions being that good again are highly unlikely. at 15 degrees F the snow was what they called blower on Tuesday, they have to be approaching 4 of cold smoke since last Saturday. The locals there (many) were telling me that that this is the best they have seen it. I am glad I got lucky.
Ski
Classic example of it being the skier not the resort, IMO. Rob, if you skied like Doug, you'd have a better appreciation of JH. Not a total slam, since not a lot of people ski like Doug and JH's best assets are lost on them.

txhedg
Guys - just found this board, and thanks for getting me stoked for my trip out to JH tomorrow. I arrive into JAC around noon, so hope to make first turns by 2:00!!! BTW, Hope you left some pow for me....... And for the record (commenting on early posts and some other JH threads on the board), JH is friggin awesome even without pow like the past wk. I've been flying in to ski there almost every year since i got out of school in 1990, even tho its a be-atch to get to for me compared to other spots i also try to hit every few years ('bird, Taos, Vail). And even without fresh, its still an amazing mountain. Even for a (relatively) old guy like me........i was there in late march when the snow sukked, and i still found some good sh~t to ski. I'm not hiking much these days or skiing the runs with mandatories (or usually even optionals) anymore, but there are VERY few places in the states i've found that push you to ski to the limits of your ability like JH (maybe Squaw, 'bird come close?). Period. And dont forget, this year and last, JH doesnt even have its best asset running (the Tram). Those of you that are skiing it this year, think about having 4k vert in one 10 min ride on days like they've had in the past week........I swear even back when i was in my 20's, you'd get to the top station, unload, and curse that it only took 10 min and you didnt have longer to "rest" your legs (as much as u can standing up) on the ride up. There is almost no feeling in the ski world (in US anyway) of that first Tram ride up in the morning when you look down to see if Corbetts is blown in, and when it is, dreading to hear your buddy (who happens to live in Colo and ski 40 days a year while you sit on your arse in front of a computer somewhere in suburban [fill in large east coast city here] say "dude, its filled in, its now or never fat boy" Anyway, I'm there in JH on "business" (its hard to say that with a striaght face, but its true) so beers are on me (or actually on my corporate amex) at the Moose apres if any of your guys are still around sat eve. just give me a heads up on here and i will try to stop over. Later guys, 23 hours to wheels up, headed to the hole. thanks again for getting me psyched txhedg

Dan-
I'll have to agree with the locals from what Papa heard. I was there during that stretch of January last year. It was SOOOO cold, and hardly snowed in Jackson at all that week. Maybe 9 inches over the week? And with high's around -5, and lows such as -35 for pretty much a week straight...
